Topic: Anybody getting a whinning in 1st gear?? (Read 9487 times)

I have a new SESG with about 250 miles on it and it has a whinning noise in 1st gear. As soon as I take it out of 1st and go into neutral or any other gear the noise goes away. It also has a slight drag even with the clutch pulled all ther way in. Any ideas or is this normal on a brand new bike? None of my others ever did it, but this is my first hydraulic clutch and 6 speed.

Yeah, they all do that!!
At least you should not have the 5th gear whine.

Since it is nothing abnormal, I guess I will wait a few hundred more miles and then switch over to Redline in all 3 holes when I do the first oil changes.

I don't recall a whine when mine was new, but I do know that the clutch got a LOT better after a few hundred miles. When new it had about five degrees of lever movement for engagement, on or off really. Now it's pretty simlar to a cable unit with a decent range of engagement.

mjb, the noise is the result of the type of gear set used for first gear versus the type used for second through sixth. What you have for first is called a spur gear or straight cut gear, and those tend to be noisy if not machined and fitted perfectly. Older Harley's had spur gears for all five, and many of those were noisy. With some additional miles and a switch to a real gear lube instead of motor oil, you will probably notice a significant reduction in the noise level.

As for the clutch drag, yes that is an all too common issue with the hydraulic clutches. It shouldn't be that way, but you can say that about a lot of the things we all learn to live with on a Harley. Have your dealer make certain there is no air in the hydraulics, and put some miles on it to wear off the high spots on the clutch plates. You might also consider trying automatic transmission fluid in the primary, rather than motor oil or regular gear oil. Auto trans fluid is specifically made for wet clutches, many of the other lubes aren't.

I definitely understand the "learn to live with that on a Harley thing"!!! I'll give it a few hundred for the clutch to wear in and I am planning on switching to Redline for the trans and primary fluids and we will see what happens.

Already working on that!!!! Can't stand these pipes.....I am used to straight pipes!!!!!! I know these won't run well with those, but I guess IO can used to it.

Remedy for me. I stopped the bike and threw the wife off, whining gone.

Had a conversation with Adam the other day about the TTS Mastertune. After I install the mufflers, and then the headpipes and TTS over the winter North Shore is going to do the dyno work for me.

I am riding out to Cedar Beach tomorrow evening for cruise night.

Those are the easy noises to get rid of...it's the mechanical ones that require the work.

1st whine is almost totally gone and I never had the whine in 5th due to the redesigned gear.

It MAY be my imagination, but, I believe my '10 shifts nicer than my '09 ever did! I'll have to get more miles on the '10 to be sure! Yes, the 5th gear whine is gone.

I had my bike in the shop for this very reason, thought something was wrong. 1st shop said something was wrong, did not know what, but was wrong. 2nd shop also test rode and said that is normal for this bike, 2010 SECU with 300 miles. I going to change out the fluids, I use amsoil, and see what happens. Most folks say that really cuts down on the 1st gear whine and clunk.

1st gear is still straight cut, it whines!
