How many miles before the drive belt should be changed?
« on: October 06, 2009, 08:56:13 PM »

I know the belts are designed (manufactured) differently now and supposed to be much more reliable than they were back in the 80s.  My question is with belt guards in place and wearing evenly.......at what mileage should we consider just changing it out as good preventative maintenance?  What do you guys think?

If they've not broken and don't show damage/rot just keep running it JC.

I had a tech at my dealership, one I trust very much, tell me as long as it doesn't get damaged by a rock or debris to run it to 100k before worrying about changing it.

I was told 70K by the tech at the dealer... then upon doing a 95" build on my old fatboy, the tech blew the belt on the test run...

My '97 Ultra had 192,000 on the dial when I purchased my '05, and it still had the original drive belt.

Like the old saying goes... "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

Now that's what I'm talking about. :2vrolijk_21:  How far out are they going!

I remember when the belts first came out and we were all removing the belt guards (cause it just didn't look like motorcycle anymore :) ) but there were a number of us that would break a belt due to a rock getting up in there or the the wheel not running true and it would wear the belt on on side or the other unevenly.  But with the newer style belt (when they started making them narrower) I was told at the CVO event in Sturgis (by somebody from the CVO team) that if properly maintained we could and should expect well over 100k miles.  I guess Grizz is proof positive.....that not just the belt will go that far, but that the bike will :2vrolijk_21:
