Compensator bolt torque spec ??
« on: April 21, 2010, 10:43:54 PM »

If someone knows the torque spec for compensator bolt (newer bikes, comp bolt not the old comp nut) would you post it please.  The more I think about it the less sure I am I know for sure what it is.

Not the accessory SE comp.  Saw that PDF online. While the bolt is the same size the spring package in between is different so I don't want to assume that the tightening/stretching protocol is the same.  Just need a torque or torque and stretch spec for the stock compensator bolt.

If no one comes up with it this evening I'll call the dealership in the morning.  Not a problem either way.

Should someone need this in the future the spec is reported as 150-160 ft pds with the stock compensator setup.

Could almost not believe something that happened in getting the information this morning though.  Called my local dealership (Cycle Connection in Joplin), where I buy some parts and get tires mounted and balanced, to ask for this torque spec.  Service writer who answered the phone wouldn't provide the information.

The same type of question that automotive industry service desks have provided to consumers for years they wouldn't answer.  He simply said he'd been told they don't provide for "maybe liability" reason but also because "we want you to bring it in or at least buy a manual."

So the common courtesies of the automotive industry between dealer and consumer are further eroded at my local shop.  I called three others within a hundred miles (Pig Trail in Rogers, AR and Route 66 and Myers Duren in Tulsa) to see if they'd provide the information.  All did.  Easily, immediately and with no hassle whatsoever.  But my local dealer wouldn't.

I still have bought parts there because I've liked the skill and effort put out by a couple of the parts guys that have been there a long time.  One recently left or was let go.  The service department out there is why I work on my own almost regardless of the issue.  I would also still take tires there to be mounted.  Partly out of convenience for me but also as a way to serve the local shop some work once or twice a year for each bike.  It is worthwhile having them out there (so it had always seemed) and that deserved some at least small occasional reciprocity from the area consumers.  So buying a few parts and the occasional small service bill went there way.

If they won't even supply something as simple and commonplace as a request for a torque spec, however, the (to me) arrogant desire to get me to "bring it in or buy a manual" is enough to sever that cord.  Guess now I'll be using them only when it is absolutely at my convenience to buy a part and there's not been time to order it cheaper for 20% off elsewhere.

Incredibly short sighted attitude.

I had a recent experience with my local and previously favored MOCO dealer - also involving a service writer - which has caused me to no longer do business with them.  I made a point to make the General Manager aware of my experience, hopeful he would say the service writer was new or inexperienced - or something - but I received an equally unacceptable response from him.  Apparently policies and nickels trumped polite, competant customer service, loyal customer and mucho dollars...   :nixweiss:

Fortunately, there are MOCO stores all around me....   :2vrolijk_21:

Well, we've got the tires and wheels off Travis's bike right now.  The shop in question isn't getting paid to do the mounting and balancing.

As Scott suggested, shortsighted. Unwillingness to extend a simple courtesy cost them today whatever they'd have charged to mount and balance a pair of tires. Last time that was $80. Add to that future tire mountings and any parts ever needed for which grabbing it here isn't simply necessary.

....and more riders who learn of these poor business practices and don't patronize that location will mean less work for those dealers.  Less work means fewer employees......and perhaps fewer dealers.  The job they save may be their own.... :nervous:

If memory serves me correctly, the tightening procedure for the bolt is to torque it to ?? ft/lbs and then tighten it another 45 degrees.  I don't have my manual (and the supplement sheet) in front of me so I can't recall the exact specs.  I got this sheet from my dealer (simple question) last year when I did some primary work on my '05.  Sorry I can't be more specific as to the numbers.

To 90 ft pds and then another 45 degrees of stretch is the spec for the comp nut on the older bikes.  The comp bolt on the 07 and newer bikes was reported by four different dealers as the straight torque spec though.

Don, I have been in sales for 20 yrs and when a business or a
company takes there focus off customer service, it is the beginning
of the end. IMHO.

In this economy customer service should be top priority at any dealer that
wants to keep the bottom line in the black.

The dealers that have gotten greedy and arrogant over the years need to
learn we do not have to and WILL NOT buy from them.

OK done with the rant.

Couldn't agree more Mark.  Though some of the things one is suddenly struck with as the choices they make are still startling.  The good thing, however, is now nearly all my parts will be 20% off without sales tax and often without freight (if you time it right at LSHD).  There's a Road King project to finish that this approx. 27% overall savings will mean a lot too.
