Change of Plans
« on: February 01, 2012, 02:06:33 PM »

After talking to Bob Woods and a few others, I've decided to go with the 07 and up style cam support plate and new cams.  I'm considering the TW 5-6R or the 5-5R.  Talked to Scott at Hillside Cycle. He asked if I knew what the compression ratio is on the my bike. I went to the factory manual and it lists 9 to 1. Did a search on the forum and saw one thread where someone with a 05 FLHTCUSE was doing the same thing and stated the factory CPR was 9 to 1, heads 95cc. Scott said both of those cams require at least a 9.5 to 1 preferably 10 to 1. I thought the 103 CVO motors were 10 to 1 motors out of the factory but apparently not. So my only option is to pull the heads, have them resurfaced and install the .030 gasket. Planning on pulling them this weekend and sending them to Scott.

Not looking to make this bike into a bar hopping bagger. It's a touring bike with a lot of two up riding with an Aluma trailer sometime in tow. The next 3 to 5 years it will be seeing a lot of the German autobahn and the twisites of the swiss alps. Sounds like my cam options are limited unless I bump up the compression.

If anyone has installed the two Woods cams I referenced above in a 103 CVO motor without doing any other mods I'd like to hear the results. Did you encounter pinging?

The motor has about 8.3/1. All of the 103 CVO heads I have fluid checked are in the high 97-98cc range.
Install domed pistons to get up to 10/1 and those cams work fine. I have done a few.

Definitely bump up your CR. I'm having my SERG fitted with SE 10.5 pistons and custom cams. You'll definitely notice the difference, and when you're running the higher elevations in the Alps, you'll retain more power. German gas is plenty good for the higher CR.

Pulled the heads today. Shipping them to Hillside Cycle tomorrow. Look what I found when I pulled the aircleaner backing plate. Also did a pinion runout check. Pictured are the max readings. Is that the norm for a stock crank? Pistons had a little more carbon on them than I'd like to see. Especially the darker rear cylinder. It appears you can adjust idle on these FI motors. Isn't that what the recessed screw is for behind the TB gasket at about 5:00 when looking into the TB?

Nope, that screw is not an idle adjustment, and you really don't want to mess with it unless you fully understand the impact it can have on the operation of the IAC (Idle Air Control).  The idle air control is a separate part that attaches to the throttle body, and in conjunction with the ECM it controls the actual idle speed.  If you want to change idle speed, you will need to do it electronically in the ECM.

If the throttle blade setting does get moved, there are ways to reset it using a voltmeter, or a feeler gauge if close enough for government work is OK for you.  It is best, however, to leave it alone.

The 2006 and earlier Twin Cam cranks had an upper wear limit of .003", and when new were around .001-.0015" in my limited experience.  With the 2007 and later engines, multiply everything by four. :o

Runout

Brain-fart....Going to re-do the run out zeroing the dial at the negative reading. Still looks like I'll be within the .003 limit.

Even though I am a government employee, I'll leave it alone...thanks. ;D

Once you get your heads back. Can you please post some picks of the port job. Good shots of the intake and exhaust ports. Cheers.

Fed Ex should be visiting the house tomorrow with my heads and parts from Hillside Cycle.  The header pipes from Jet Hot in Burlington NC should be here as well.

3 day weekend, home alone (wife visiting parents in SC), a scoot in the garage that needs some work....life is good ;D

Glad I pulled the heads and sent them to Scott and the boys from Hillside.  They found a bent exhaust valve.

Don't see anything marks on the piston indicating interference with a valve.
