Exhaust
« on: July 18, 2005, 09:11:33 PM »

Just wondering what everyone is running on their FXR.  I havent even gotten the darn thing yet, and I know that the stock system will not be loud enough.  I am looking for the deepest tone.

Suggestions?

Thanks,
Jim

If you can find some original Screamin Eagle slip ons, they are hard to beat. The newer SE II's are not as loud. I had some old SE slip ons but they were damaged, and I replaced them with Cycle Shack slip ons. I think they are real close to the original SE mufflers in tone and loudness for half the price.

Well, as the storey goes, I went with the Vance and Hines Straight Shots.  I really like the look and I have seen a few FXRs with them.  I dont know how they will sound, but I do know they are very popular here in Kansas City.  Seems everyone has V&H pipes!
I will send pics soon..the dealer wont be done until Tuesday.

I run staggered Straight Shots on mine, with an outside-in slash cut.

They pop nice when you open it up, and chug quietly when riding near Johnny Law.

And they set off car alarms in ritzy neighborhoods.

That should be a sales slogan :)

I have Sampson rip saws on mine. I like the look but they are loud to say the least. Had a V/H 2 into 1 pro pipe prior to this. More horsepower with the pro pipe but I like the looks of the Sampsons better.

I use Khromewerks AR staggered duals with tapered mufflers to keep the stock FXR look, right down to the kicked-up front pipe at the footpeg, but minus the crossover pipe.  I'm pleased with the look and sound.  They have welded-in baffles.

I have Vance and Hines Short Shots on my 99 FXR3. They have the slash cut tips, get lots of comments, and set off car alarms.

PS
SuperTrapp duals with all of the discs removed. Awesome sound and believe it or not good performance on an 80" motor with mid range cam and most HiPo carbs

those pipes look good on your bike, but in your sig pic it looks like you are running V&H straight shots, is that right ?  why the change ?

Mikey, that post and picture was posted in August of 2005. :)   Taken earlier than that in NC.  A LOT has changed since then.

As much as I liked the Khrome Werks pipes for the reasons stated back then, I decided over time that I didn't like the scabbed-on look of the stock heat shields and did like the "straight" and smooth look of the Straight Shots pipes.  I initially wondered if the Straight Shots would be too loud but I ran into a FXR3 in the Keys with Straight Shots on it and after a listen was sold.  I think I've had the Straight Shots on for about 2 1/2 years now. I did have to feel around for a quieter baffle for them but I settled on V&H's own Quiet Baffle (#V21869).

When did they go to the SEII?

I have a set of pipes in storage somewhere that came off an '05 FLHR that I might pull pout and replace my Supertrapps with on the PORK.

I love the V&H Straight Shots on my FXR3 Especially since they're completely burnt in now

Good to be back...Just been busy.

Flying back to boston this weekend to get those pipes and stuff.

Keeping somewhat on-topic...

I found that old article on Miles Adcock's FXR3 and find he was just down the st. from where I live.

There goes the ol' "won't see one like it" theory for Knsas City.

I had and liked the Pythons, but the Cycle Shacks are cheaper, look similar, and make better numbers than the Pythons did when we tested them. Don't let the low price skeer ya! They're the best kept Evo exhaust secret there is! ;)

About Cycle Shack slash cut 2-2's.  Not to offend Howie, but I had those on my FXR2 for a while and took them off.  They were loud enough to make my ears ring after an hour or so and they never did fit quite right.  The rear pipe had a sag to it that I never could adjust out.  Back to the noise, this was before I did the motor work--afterwards the bike was noticeably louder.  If they were too loud for the rider with a stock motor, they'd be even worse with any mods.  I could also drag the front (lower to the ground) muffler on a sharp turn.

I mean, I liked the way they look, myself.  Still do, but functionally, I had some issues.

what exhaust for my FXR4 ?
« Reply #32 on: November 13, 2008, 03:12:57 PM »

I know, I know ............ and I might wish I never asked this, but felt the need to

I want to put a new exhaust on my FXR4 and am not sure what mfg to go with

I currently have the V&H straight shots on there.  I'm sorta tired of the sound, and did get a recommendation from Tim about putting in new baffles.
I might, but the pipes are also a little beat up over the past 8 years.

I think the rear cyl runs rich and the muffler is starting to discolor.  This might also be due to the fact that the muffler clamp had come loose and a small gap opened up between the pipe and the muffler and I didn't notice it for awhile.

On top of that, I dropped a rain cover on the pipes this summer ........ melted black plastic all over the mufflers .... still trying to get it off there.

So........... anyways here's the scoop.

I see a lot of yall running pipes that I can't find where those pipes would fit on my bike.

Take for example, I see a lot of yall mention V&H pro pipe.  I've called V&H, they told me that they no longer make anything that will fit on the FXR4. The staight shots for my bike are no longer in production.

Sooooooooooooooo what say yall

2-1 or 2-2 what mfg

Edit: HeHe! He is! Maybe Neal will see it and rescue it. :2vrolijk_21:

Actually, why not add it here, then they can merge them and it'll still be in order. ;)

Could be.  I just surfed the Python website and noticed they advertise a "Quiet Baffle" with a part number of V21869.  That's the part number that V&H uses for their "Quiet Baffle". Same ones I have in my V&H StraightShots.  Coincidence?  Hmmmmmm.

I might just go with the quite baffle in mine, save some money ..... but they're starting to look kinda tired

I'm sure you didn't notice anything change in the power range when you installed those baffles, correct ?

Did you get your baffels directly from V&H  ?

what is the website you went to for the Python's ?

I think I ran through my various StraightShots baffle experiments somewhere on the board, but here's the basics.  Khrome Werks HP-Plus baffles take the noise down a notch below the stock V&H cheese grater baffles and give you a touch more throttle response in mid-range RPM's.  V&H Quiet Baffles take the noise down another notch and provide a noticeable increase in bottom end torque.  I kept the Quiet Baffles in mine but occasionally swap back to the Khrome Werks just for kicks.

Actually I got them through ebay.  Several catalogs stock them if you prefer.  Or maybe straight from V&H.

what is the website you went to for the Python's ?

The link I posted above is Python Performance.  You can navigate around to various products from it.  Be aware that they don't seem to stock much if anything for FXR's anymore.  Might have to watch ebay.

Mike - Thanks for the input....... yes, now that you mention I do recall reading a post from you, somewhere, where you talked about the various baffles you've tested, Thanks!

I have to pay more attention ........... I didn't even see the website up there in your post   .....    THANKS !

mikey....

Ok, so.....what's the budget?

......if you said the budget might be $700-$800, AND you determined that a 2-1 was desired and you felt that you also wanted quiet, with great performance.....THENNNNNN.....lol.....how about a 2-1 Super Trapp.....of course you won't find such available on their website, but I know that personally one can acquire such from SuperTrapp directly and perhaps @ just a bit less than the $700.00.  It will require 6-7 weeks to have it at your door since it will need to be made and sent to you, if you personally want more information I can provide the name as well as e~mail (providing of course they are still with the company) of the person this summer that I spoke with about this subject matter from Super Trapp.

I have a 2-1 Vance and Hines pro pipe which V&H's made for FXRs, and while V&H continues to make a 2-1 Pro Pipe with Heat Shields for Dynas, they don't make this specific pipe any longer for the FXR, they quit making them about 22 months ago.....because the pipe is no longer made and it's a great pipe (except for "loudness" in my opinion, I did arrive at 50 this year lol and AARP has sent me a "membership" letter lol), I won't sell it as it will always have value.....so perhaps the answer for a new pipe might be trying to find a "dealership" that still might have a V&H 2-1 Pro Pipe in their possession which for some reason hasn't sold yet.  But then again if you asked my impression of the pipe, it's as I said "too" loud, but if your deaf or you like "loud" then without a doubt it's a great performer.

Although it sounds like there are other alternatives.....as mentioned above by others, it's just that if you asked me which is the "best" performance pipe for your FXR, it would be a 2-1 styled pipe, and the manufacturers I mentioned above were the 2 best at making them......and as you have just read, they "officially" are not being made any longer, which brings me to why I feel having many of us staying in touch with one another for topics such as "modifications" or for "tech support" as well as for future "parts" becomes so criticial to our enjoyment of these bikes......it may seem somewhat silly right now.....but in another 22 months I wonder what else will be "scarce" in locating as far as "parts" are concerned.....perhaps everyone we better get our act together and get a "ride" planned soon.....while we can still ride....LOL.  The sky is falling, the sky is falling..... :bananarock:

I have been thinking to myself just how many orders by FXR Owners would be required to get a "decent" discount for a 2-1 Supper Trapp say in the $400-$500 range.....since they would have to make a "run" on them.....just thinking out loud.....laughing.....there are perhaps many that see no "value" in running a 2-1 pipe and perhaps wouldn't or don't like the looks of them anyway......one never knows.....

Tim

mikey....

Ok, so.....what's the budget?

OK, so I like cheap, but am wise with experience and understand that quality = cost   so budget is somewhere in the $400 - $700 range and like the lower end of that scale as much as possible

......if you said the budget might be $700-$800, AND you determined that a 2-1
I prefer the 2-2 pipe looks, I like the way the V&H straight shots look on the bike, but have not ruled out a 2-1, some of them even look good to me :nervous:

was desired and you felt that you also wanted quiet,
I do, mostly, but want it to be heard when I jump on it   :coolblue:

with great performance.....THENNNNNN.....lol.....how about a 2-1 Super Trapp
it's certainly worth my consideration

.....of course you won't find such available on their website, but I know that personally one can acquire such from SuperTrapp directly and perhaps @ just a bit less than the $700.00.  It will require 6-7 weeks to have it at your door since it will need to be made and sent to you, if you personally want more information I can provide the name as well as e~mail (providing of course they are still with the company) of the person this summer that I spoke with about this subject matter from Super Trapp.
I will keep this in mind, THANKS For your HELP !!

I have a 2-1 Vance and Hines pro pipe which V&H's made for FXRs, and while V&H continues to make a 2-1 Pro Pipe with Heat Shields for Dynas, they don't make this specific pipe any longer for the FXR, they quit making them about 22 months ago.....because the pipe is no longer made and it's a great pipe (except for "loudness" in my opinion, I did arrive at 50 this year lol and AARP has sent me a "membership" letter lol),

I won't sell it as it will always have value.....so perhaps the answer for a new pipe might be trying to find a "dealership" that still might have a V&H 2-1 Pro Pipe in their possession which for some reason hasn't sold yet.  But then again if you asked my impression of the pipe, it's as I said "too" loud, but if your deaf or you like "loud" then without a doubt it's a great performer.
OK, so this might not be the pipe for me anyways .... I'm wanting to go down in the loudness scale
Here's what I'm thinking
Looks over performance - I'm not building a race bike
Sound - DEEP more than RASP - SOFT in tone until I JUMP ON THE THROTTLE
   :pepper: :pepper:

you know the sound of Rinehart True Duals on baggers .....  I kinda like that sound

so maybe the Supper Trap is still worth consideration ......

Although it sounds like there are other alternatives.....as mentioned above by others, it's just that if you asked me which is the "best" performance pipe for your FXR, it would be a 2-1 styled pipe, and the manufacturers I mentioned above were the 2 best at making them......and as you have just read, they "officially" are not being made any longer, which brings me to why I feel having many of us staying in touch with one another for topics such as "modifications" or for "tech support" as well as for future "parts" becomes so critical to our enjoyment of these bikes......it may seem somewhat silly right now.....but in another 22 months I wonder what else will be "scarce" in locating as far as "parts" are concerned.....perhaps everyone we better get our act together and get a "ride" planned soon.....while we can still ride....LOL.  The sky is falling, the sky is falling..... :bananarock:
LOL at the sky is falling ........ but I understand your point ..... our parts are going to increasingly become harder and more difficult to come by as time moves along
