Stock motor Q.
« on: March 18, 2018, 02:33:27 PM »

I'm in the process of ordering rings for my stock 07 Ultra Classic from Performance Unlimited here in the UK.
I'm asking for a set of Total Seal Gapless rings that they supply.
They've asked me two questions,

4.00 bore, is that plain iron or coated?

How deep is each groove in the piston?

I have given them ring width (Top & second rings 1.2mm oil 2.5mm. l believe to be correct.

I can't seem to find that info in my books. Would anyone have that information that I can pass on to the supplier.

Any input would be appreciated.

Ok, I'm completely confused on these rings :nixweiss:

I don't know what to order. I was given this information a while back in an earlier post I thought it was sorted

Hastings piston rings:
2007-14 1800cc Eng. 110cu.in.
Twin Cam w/CVO models 101.60mm
4.000 2 2M5299
4 - 1.2mm 2 - 2.5mm
Then I came across this statement,

These are a brand new set (2 pistons), of standard size Hastings piston ring for 2009 and up Harley-Davidson CVO 110 c.i. engines. They are 4.000"/101.601mm bore, .098"/2.5mm oil ring, .047"/1.2mm 2nd. & top ring thickness. I say 2009 & up because very early 2008 110 cvo's used Aries sub-contracted pistons & [http://flash=200,200]http://these won't work on those early models[/flash], I learned that while doing a rebuild, and had to contact Total Seal for those rings.
Does anyone know,...are the top rings in the 07s 1.2mm or are they 1.5mm's
Total Seal had no listings for 1.2mm only 1.5mm.
So what width is the correct one?

My question to you would be whats wrong with the proven hastings ring?
I have a friend who bragged about the total seal rings he installed in his bike.
When I went on a day trip ride down state he was puffin smoke on acceleration.
I had hastings in mine. Never smoked and believe me I ran that roadking hard with those wood 555"s in her!

I use Total Seal brand rings all the time. They are their conventional style rings though. Having ring gap is better for air cooled street engines.

Nothing wrong with Hastings rings.

I was going for the Hastings rings part number 2M5299 they are 1.2mm top rings and 2.5mm oil when I came across this statement from a seller on eBay

set (2 pistons), of standard size Hastings piston ring for 2009 and up Harley-Davidson CVO 110 c.i. engines. They are 4.000"/101.601mm bore, .098"/2.5mm oil ring, .047"/1.2mm 2nd. & top ring thickness. I say 2009 & up because very early 2008 110 cvo's used Aries sub-contracted pistons & these won't work on those early models,

Hastings says that part number fits 07-14 ? But it's not what the eBay seller says.

Then I checked Total Seal and have the same problem saying 1.2mm top rings.

So are the rings for a 07 Ultra Classic (1.2mm) or (1.5mm) top rings?

I used to run TS gapless on my nitrous big block drag boat. Almost zero leakdown after many many bottles
ran through it. Air cooled engines might be a different story. But TS gapless worked well on a 700 horse bigblock.

2 cents...

As I'm doing some work on my 07 Ultra motor it's come to mind they had a recall on the 07 rear head gasket.

Do I need a separate gasket for the rear head other than what comes in the kit?

What was the fault and how was it rectified, thicker gasket, modified gasket?

In the kit I've got I don't see any distinction between the two.

Both head gaskets are the same. The reason the rear gasket failed much more often than the front was due to how extremely hot the rear cylinders ran back then. I can't remember if you could actually distinguish the new gasket from the old visually. Any top end gasket set for a 110 in current inventory should have the latest level head gaskets. The head gasket part number is 16801-07B and it was still being used on the 2013 TC110's.

Thanks for the input. :2vrolijk_21:

I'll check it over carefully as I take it apart.
