Title: BOOM GTS upgrade swap for older BOOM GT radio
Post by: Heatwave on January 17, 2020, 12:08:35 AM
I bought the new BOOM GTS radio from Surdyke back when it was on sale for $1520. The install instructions were straightforward. Pretty easy swap out. I swapped the XM module (76000233) over to the new GTS unit.

After the install, I took the bike to the dealer for flashing. The new BOOM GTS unit runs great. XM subscription runs perfect. I swapped all the GPX files over and all my phone contacts so the GPS and audio is like ir was always there.

Very pleased with this upgrade. Its nice having Carplay now for audio and GPS directions.

Did you reuse the Sirrus antenna or did you need a new one?

You can reuse the Sirius antenna as its magnetically held in position on its mounting platform.

Thank you.  I didn't know if they were different.

How do you access Apple Car Play?

From what I have read the GTS comes flashed as needing a Mic, whether via wired or wireless headset which requires a WHIM....still not clear on this.  I’m not sold on the WHIM yet.

or

if you have radio flashed to have the Mic “disabled” in the Apple Car Play configuration.

I’m getting ready do this upgrade also. Was glad to hear that I don’t need to buy a new SiriusXM Satellite Module.

Any words of wisdom you can share will be greatly appreciated!

thanks
Jim

WHIM module is only needed if you intend to use a wireless headset. It is NOT needed with a wired headset. Carplay will immediately be accessible when 3 conditions are met:

1) An iphone is connected to the BOOM USB port
2) a wired headset is plugged into BOOM GTS or a wireless headset is paired through a WHIM module
3) the iphone has a cell tower connection

Carplay will also be available if the BOOM microphone has been disabled by a dealer through Digitech. Id the microphone is disabled, you will not be able to make or receive phone calls, use a CB, use Siri or use the BOOM intercom system. It has been reported that the option to disable the microphone in order to enable CsrPlay use WITHOUT a headset attached, was eliminated in Nov 2019.

Thanks for the information.

Did you install the WHIM and if so any issues with the installation and or use?

Also, I think I recall from another thread that you were able to use the XM module from the old GT unit. Is that correct?

Thanks

Has this inabilty to switch off the microphone actually been observed to have happened please?

Yes, the XM module from my GT radio worked great. I do not have a WHIM unit and no plans to add it as I prefer the hardwire headset setup.

My understanding is that Apple forced HD to drop the ability to access Carplay if the microphone was disabled. This change occurred when HD allowed the GTS upgrade on the 2017/2018 bikes.

Just a quick update on my GTS upgrade to my 2017 CVO Limited .... almost a year later. Very pleased and now can't imagine riding without the advantages of CarPlay for long distance trips. I also couldn't imagine going back to the slower operating GT radio.

After almost 10,000 miles riding with the new GTS radio, I have only one complaint. Why can't HD include a "distance to turn" with direction indicator permanently on the map screen? I've done the latest GTS update and they still do not offer it. They include a "time to turn" but no "distance to turn" field. There is a distance to turn field that pops up when you are close to the turn but sometimes I want to know far in advance how close I am to the next turn on my route. Almost all GPS Nav systems provide a permanent "Distance to turn" with a directional arrow on the main map screen.

The only way to view the distance to turn that I could find, is to look in "maneuvers" which then takes you off the map screen. Not a very convenient approach to viewing your "distance to turn". Otherwise I am very pleased with the upgrade to the GTS BOOM Nav Radio system.

Nice to hear and thanks for the insight as I just ordered the GTS for my 2018 CVO RG that does have WHIM. Hopefully things flow as smoothly for me as they have for you.

One glitch that I noticed on my last trip.

I have a 2015 SG with GTS and WHIM installed and use the HD SENA headset.

I discovered that in order for the HD SENA headset to pair with the Boom Audio, the headset must be powered on before I switch the motorcycle on.  The headset will then pair and I will hear through the headset “Boom Audio Paired”.

One time while riding I realized that I forget to power on my headset and once I powered up the headset was unable to pair with the Boom Audio.

Does anyone know of a way to initiate the pairing protocol while riding?

Thanks

I can't answer your question, however the issue you describe just makes me more confident in my decision to stay with a hardwired headset instead of upgrading to the WHIM with a BT headset.

I have a 2020 SG CVO so it only has th WHIM. I have not experienced any issues or special timing affects pairing. So far it has been flawless.

More than once when pairing I have taken off on bike before everything is up.  A few times it shows head set idle when trying to figure out why CarPlay did not come up.  I turn head set off, wait a minute and turn back on.  This works 90% of the time.

My biggest issue is once an a while the bike does not recognize anything plugged into USB.  Only fix I have found for that is shut off bike wait 4 minutes or so and restart.

Whole system as glitches.  Had to find cause when its sporadic.

Release before moving right or not?

Long hold, once it comes up, release and then move right.

Thank you guys. Much appreciated!

Finally got my GTS system installed just in time for the crappy winter weather here in Washington. It was easy enough to get the basics figured out, especially with the help of these threads. The comparison to the original is night and day! Literally. So far so good.
I could only get $350 on ebay for my old unit with todays market saturation, so my cost came out around $1200, but it gave me 40K miles of trouble free use so I guess at the end of the day it's not sooo bad.

Thanks again everyone for all of your input!!
