Do you load your bike in a Pickup?
« on: March 18, 2004, 09:50:45 AM »

This article made me think...and decide to stop at the Dodge Dealer and pick up new cables:

http://money.cnn.com/2004/03/18/pf/autos/gm_recall/index.htm

Now, my truck is a '97 and showin' it's age.  I have loaded bikes in my truck many times but never thought about the cables on the tailgate.  If they were to give way while loadin' ... well at best, it would not be pretty and at worst could lead to serious injury.

I have three ramps, I ride up the middle one with a foot on each of the ones on the side.  I have gotten comfortable doin' it which is a good thing given that the first time I ever did it, at 500 miles, I drove my then new Road King in and ran it into the side wall, dingin' the front fender.

I am going to buy some new cables today if I can...

A related question.  I've never put a bike in the back of a pick-up but a buddy of mine and I have been talking about it to get ourselves south during the winter for riding.  Question is can you put 2 bikes in the back of a full size pick up?  Any tricks to doing it if you can?  Thanks!

Thanks for all the info!  None of my bikes have ever been on a trailer or pick-up either but, as I said, I might have to in order to get out of the snow in winter.  Something I can do now that I am retired!  Note I am not talking about riding through some flurries, I am talking about inches of slush/snow not to mention the salt on the roads up here.  Even on dry roads in the winter, the salt dust left on the roads until the first spring rains will pit and rust anything on your bike as soon as it gets wet.

By the way, anyone else notice that their minimum riding temp seems to keep pace with their age???!!!

Guess what happened to me Friday...the cables on my 97 Ram blew out as I was unloading a tree...no damage, but I am sure glad it wasn't one of my bikes.

Stopped by the nearest dealer...non in stock.

I got the recall letter from Chevy a while back about my '02 Z71's tailgate cables also. Of course the dealers don't have the new stainless cables in stock and don't know when they'll get them. Looks like Chevy just sent out the letters to cover their ass in case someone did have an accident since they tell you in the letter not to put any load on the tailgate. In the past, I have used ramps hooked to the tailgate to load and unload a Softtail Springer. The dealer says that if your cables look bad, they will install another set of the same type until the new ones arrive.
