Any Shovelheads in your stables?
« on: April 05, 2013, 12:06:37 AM »

I have an 1980 FXB Sturgis that I bought new. Have ridden this bike in South Korea for 28 years.  Thought I was comfortable on trips till I bought the 08 RK and later the 11 CVO Street Glide. Mostly she's a bar hopper now. Just interested how many Shovel owners out there.

I've got a 1972 FLH. Got a bunch of parts for it this winter, and will be getting it back on the road this summer. The last Shovel I had was a 1980 FLT. That thing was a beast but it was comfy as hell. I'd ride next to my brothers and watch them come a foot off there seats on the rough Okinawa streets, and I just cruised through. It was actually a very reliable bike.

Have an '80 Sturgis myself.  You & I PM'd a couple of notes in years past.  Mine's 99% stock, gets ridden maybe once a month just to remind me how far Harleys have come in 33 years.  Not that there's anything inherently wrong with it  -  vibrates like a solid mounted shovel (long stem mirrors useless above 50 mph), was state-of-the-art in 1980 with dual belt drive.  Front belt not a good idea (have broken two), rear belt changed HDs forever.

Love the discussion but as we all like to say here.....a picture is worth a thousand of those!

How 'bout a couple pics, brothers?  :2vrolijk_21:

Here's a few of a resurection a friend is working.  I worked the rocker boxes, finned cam cover, tranny cover, fork lowers and front brake cover.

While working the boxes. They were really pitted bad.

Finally got them where I'm satisfied.  I left some "charactor in them" but got nearly every pit out...good thing these were way thicker than they needed to be!

After...awaiting the rest of the bike's assembly.  This bike was originally a 1960 Pan with 67ish shovel heads.  It's getting converted to a hard tail with moderate extension & rake.

1980 Sturgis shovelhead.  Didn't like the stock 'ham can' air filter cover so installed a round one.  Didn't like the 2-into-1 stock exhaust so put slash cuts on it (saved orig of course).  Otherwise just minute changes only another Sturgis owner would spot.

Sturgis engine.  Box stock except for air cleaner & pipes (mentioned above).  First HD I ever owned with no aluminum to polish.

So I guess that means it's a Pan-Shovel ;D

Awesome job! ... some people don't realize how much time and effort goes into doing that.
