Harley detachable locks
« on: October 09, 2007, 09:02:14 PM »

Do these things work OK?  I ordered some today for the SERG.  Been nervous every time I've parked the bike anywhere for anymore than a couple minutes.  2LR had his chopped pack stolen . . . . I'm sure these aren't undefeatable, but anything is better than nothing, right?

i bought the 2 pack but i could only use one, they mount inside the newer style detachable racks and dont line up very well. takes some effort to remove once unlocked ( not a bad thing ) but with both i couldnt get the rack on. also you will need to modify the key by gently bending it to a right angle, again because its on the inside the key is too tall......

They work fine.  The only problem is that the lock key is too long to easily work the lock in most areas and you have to modify the length of the key by bending or shortening.  There was posts on this on the old website.  Also keep the lock barrel lubed where the key goes in.   Hope this helps, Bob.

Like Neil said, bend the key to help from scratching the bottom of the tour pack. Have one for the tour pack and one on the passenger backrest.

Neal, thanks.  I got the 2-pack planning to use 1 for the chopped tour-pak and the other for the passenger backrest I have on order.

I've had poor luck w/ the things. Like the others said, the key is too long. Also, at least one of mine on the inside.

I have one on my backrest.  It worked two or three times before a spring shot out of it and the pin stayed up.  At least it broke in the unlocked position.  And yes, it was difficult to get the key into the thing.

I too had to shorten the key in order to unlock the tour pak from the mount. Don't forget to travel with the key, just in case.

The locks work, but as several folks have already mentioned, the key is is too long to use with the detachable tour pack rack (when you unlock, the spring loaded pin in the lock pops up and the key jams against the bottom of the rack, making removal of the key almost impossible).  My method for getting around that can be found here:
