GPS Audio
« on: February 25, 2007, 02:50:57 PM »

I'd really like to add a decent GPS (like I had on my 03 Ultra) back on to my bike.  Love the look of the Garmin ones I see you guys discussing, and would go for one, despite having the MoFoMoCo system standard on the 07 CUSE2.

So, you're all thinking, what stops me?  Simple.  It's no good if I can't listen to my music, whether radio or MP3/CD, and have the GPS interrupt to give me instructions in my headset, just like my 03 did.  Wiring to the AUX socket doesn't do this, so that is a non-starter.  But it MUST be possible to tap the output from the Garmin into the headset wiring directly, surely?  With all the really clever electronics guys on the board here, somebody cleverer than me must be able to do it easily, no?

The sound output wouldn't need amplifying, so it could go direct to the headset, and perhaps some sort of relay type device could be used to cut the normal audio while there was input from the GPS (or is that too simple - is the GPS audio always on?)

Nobody looked at this, or got any ideas?

Kennedy, I think, had a auxiliary input device for the old HD system but nothing yet for our HK set ups.

I am seriously in need of a device to allow a GPS and Radar to interrupt the Audio output but it has not been invented......

Someone must be working on this?????

Go to www.jmcorp.com and check out bluetooth. It will be available in April. Talked to JM the other day and they are going to have a unit in Daytona.

Yes, Kennedy had a unit for the old system, Brad. That's what I used on my 03 Ultra. Worked great. I asked about the HK system, and he told me he had no plans to develop anything at all for it.  :(

Looks like J&M are getting there, but till they have the right "dongle" on the market, it's just vapourware.   :(

On my 07, the stock nav will interrupt the audio so it gets your attention. But I do not like the stock nav, so I am considering Zumo.  But I think the question is, where can you tap into the radio, so the nav voice on the zumo will override the radio, etc.  Is that what we are discussing here? If so, can it or has it been dun?

Yup, that is what we are discussing...
Nope, it can't be done....yet!

Only solution is to load MP3 songs on the Garmin, and plug it into the front of the radio...when you need the voice directions, use the Aux on the radio, let the MP3 play...she will overide when necessary.

Interesting workaround, but not really acceptable for me.... :(

I can't help but think that there MUST be a simple solution, and that somebody half capable with electronics (i.e. not me!)  could think something up in 5 minutes though.

Can you plug the zumo in the harley bluetooth module and have the zumo nav voice overide any input selections on the radio?

I very much doubt it Rhino.  Bluetooth is.... peculiar at the best of times, and the Harley version is unsurprisingly more pecliar than most!

5 minutes is a tall order. I am going to work on a system based on the Autocom interupter, they have three models and I believe they have the best priority based interupters I've seen.

There are so many different ways to set whatever system you put together, based on if you want the speakers playing the output or if you want a helmet output.

For me, my first goal is to have my Ipod play with interuption from the radar detector (first priority) and gps (second priority) with the output to my ear molds or aux in on the HD radio. My second goal (maybe next year) is to work on the switching system comming from the radio, Ipod, gps and radar detector, going to the amplifier if possible.

Check out the Autocom website. The UK website http://www.autocom.co.uk/ gives more information than the the US site http://www.autocomamerica.com/

I saw these at the Chicago bike show and was very impressed at the options that were available.

Yes, I've got an Autocom system here - it's good quality stuff.  But is something that sophisticated really necessary just to get extra audio into your helmet speakers?

For me the reason I like the Autocom is the way you can set up the priority having the radar detector take first priority the gps second and whatever music source you choose third. This is very important to me, maybe just me........Roy

No, it's a nice feature - but of course all unnecessary on the Ultra Classic, as the audio system is fine.  Except when you want to add a GPS (or radar detector, I guess)!
