No More Online Discounts on OEM parts?
« on: December 23, 2021, 09:41:06 AM »

I don't think this has been covered on this site but have you guys seen the MOCO's 2022 Internet Sales Policy?  The way it reads, as of January 1, 2022, Dealerships will no longer be able to sell or ship parts, apparel, or even motorcycles to customers outside of their geographic territory!  Big Sky H-D already has a popup on their website stating such.  I have some parts on backorder from Surdyke that won't be filled until January 2022 so I sent them a chat and asked if the new policy would affect my order, their response was that they have not been told anything about it.  Maybe they're waiting until January 1 to post it on their site or maybe they were granted some sort of exemption, but if not this new policy will essentially kill their internet sales business.

Here is the Policy

Would love to read their boilerplate dealer agreement sometime.

Twolane, I believe that boiler plate agreement was drafted by the infamous law firm of Dewey, Cheatham, and Howell, LLP

I have read the attachment a few times.  They tried this several years ago and it didn't hold.

This is done to protect dealers and get people to buy parts local.  Harley does nothing to protect the customer for Crappy dealers like Six Bends that marks every part can clothing item up over what the P&A book lists it for.  Then you also have the dealers than never have parts in stock.

Will also hurt dealers that sell lots of bikes out of their area.

I'm hoping this fails like last time, and I almost never buy from Sturdyke or other Discount dealers.

I don't see this working on bike sales when theres a bike event like bike week. The local dealers sell lots of bikes to out of state buyers that are not in there area !! I did see this happen a dealer would not sell a bike CVO to a couple I was riding with because they were out of there area for sales. The sales person said yes we call sell it to you but Harley will hold us accountable and may not let us get more CVO'S as an example or some other way to slap our hands. This happen in PA and the couple was from PA just about 150 to 200 miles from home and they said the dealer will not dealer trade this bike to your local HD dealer.

Ronnie's H-D sent a letter asking customers to call Harley and complain.  I did and the rep I spoke with said they have received a lot of calls.  So let your voice be heard and perhaps they will back off.

One more reason to say :sauer021: MoCo!!! :sauer005:

All they are doing is sending business to the aftermarket... higher quality products and possibly cheaper (even if they aren't I'd pay more for higher quality).

HD needs to let the free market dictate survivors and losers.  Trying to artificially protect some dealers from those savvy enough to operate an online discount sales program makes HD seem like they’re stuck in a prior decade.  The problem isn’t online sales, it’s having too many dealers for the current sales volume.

The # works from Canada...will call Monday.

For my '08 I ordered a load of stuff from a discount dealer (Rebecca?) and had it delivered to my house in Nanaimo, BC.

When I got my '12 I could not get the load sent to Canada....had to use 'Ship Happens' in Blaine, Washington.

When I got the trailer in '17 I ordered a load and they could not ship to 'Ship Happens'...it had to be a residence. The forum member that I bought the trailer from was nice enough to accept numerous deliveries and store them in the trailer until I made it down to Vancouver, Washington to get the trailer.

Now I have a '20 and tried to order a load to the house of a friend of my Wife......they could not take the order because they are no longer allowed to take Canadian CCs for delivery orders. Her friend ordered and paid for me.

Most parts can be sourced from the after-market.......Harley has been chasing me there a decade already!

I'm all for aftermarket parts . . . except when they impact factory warranty or ESP.  Most failed items I'd need would already be covered by the warranty or ESP but there are / may be some performance enhancements for example that require genuine moco factory parts.  I'm on my seventh 'last new Harley' (and I really mean it this time . . . I think) so probably not that big an issue for me.  But the idea of big brother Harley dictating the terms of legitimate sales just rubs me the wrong way.

Just got off the phone with H-D customer service. I expressed my dis-pleasure with this policy and informed the individual I was talking to that this is a guarantee to make customers like me very unhappy. I also explained to him that parts I ordered from my local dealer on 8-21-2021 ARE STILL NOT IN YET!!! After waiting for a month I ordered the same parts from an online dealer, got them in a week, and got the bike back on-the-road in time for some fall riding. If it was not for the online option that bike would still be apart in my shed! He told me that the local dealer can get the parts from the other dealer and then get them to me. ARE YOU F'N KIDDING ME? Any company that operates like this deserves to go under. Never in my life have I ever heard such dumbassery.

Has anyone placed an order with Surdyke after January 1st?  There is nothing about the new policy on their website so I was curious if an order would go through or if it kicks out when you put in your shipping address. My parts are on back order until the 28th but I have not received any correspondence indicating that my order will not be filled.

I went on there website and checked pricing, they where about 20% off retail, I went on New Castle, you can't even buy at retail from them unless you live in there area, if I was a dealership I would be pissed that I can't sell to who I want and for how much.

There is nothing (except greed) stopping local dealers from price matching the online dealers.  If they are too lazy to get in the online sales game, then maybe they should sell their dealership to someone who WANTS to grow the business and make money. One thing is certain, anytime the free market is interfered with, the consumer is the one who pays.

Amen to that. And let me add- I have been slowly moving away from H-D. Out of my last 4 bike purchases, 3 have been other brands. The loyal H-D customer (like us guys on here) are increasingly fed-up with this company and their products. Why are they pushing us to the competition?

I've had a pretty good relationship with my local dealer. BUT, I've ordered things online from other dealers because of pricing. asked local dealer to match the online price & was told he couldn't buy it for that price, much less sell it for that price. I call BS. how can one dealer sell to me ( and you know they're still making a profit) less than the local can buy it. maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think the MOCO is selling the same parts to different dealers at different pricing. I told local guys I'd like to keep money local but I can't see giving away extra thousands because of dealership greed on mark up. my daughter used to work in motor clothes & I know what she could get me clothes & parts for( even with the mark up over cost for her). it's crazy on the mark up.

MoCo bikes are over priced ($50K for a yellow CVO RGU) now add forced price fixing to parts, let'em rot.  Won't have to worry soon about buying online OEM from anyone when they are out of business.  Have a couple rides planned over the next couple months and then Thelma may be on the for sale pages.

To those asking if Surdyke is still taking orders at their normal reduced prices.  YES.  I need a new starter, price at HD is $434.95, Surdyke price is $325.41.  I placed my order on Tuesday and received the shipping notice this morning.
