BLUE FLAME FXR3......I'M NOW AN OWNER!
« on: February 16, 2011, 03:20:58 AM »

After weeks of searching, I found & bought, a one owner, 13,600 mile BLUE FLAME FXR3 just 5 hours from home. The guy just happened to be a custom painter for the same Harley dealer I bought my 08 FLHRC from. He knew it was a collectible bike, but had no idea how few of these were made, and especially how few blue flame bikes were produced.

As you can see from the pictures, he pulled the original tank off, after he bought it, and bought another FXR tank and painted it with his own custom flame/checkered flag theme. The original tank looks like it just rolled off the assembly line.
The bike also has a set of FXR bags, and a H-D windshield, which I already removed. Not going to run with either, and the bags are in need of a good conditioning.

So far, from what I can tell, here are the good points and the bad points.........

The good:
1) The bike runs out very well
2) The heads have been ported & polished
3) A performance cam has been installed
4) An S&S Super G carb & a/c kit is installed
5) No oil leaks
6) The seat is perfect (after a good coat of vinyl conditioner)
7) "Most" of the painted parts are perfect (see below)

The bad:
1) The rear fender has some scratching from the throw-over bags (under the seat), and under the seat mount tab, there a chip in the paint.
2) The windshield rubbed off the chrome in a spot about half the size of a dime, on the back of both front turn signals.
3) The rocker box covers have a few spots of chrome pitting.
4) One of the handlebar risers has a chrome issue (hard to see)
5) The rear header, heat shield, has a chrome pit

After giving it a good 2 hour look-over, this is about all I can find. The bike spent a good part of it's life housed in his paint shop, and has a fine coat of dust over the bike (which I will rectify tomorrow) Being as anal as I am, it was kind of a shame to see the bike as dusty and unkempt as it was, so I had to bite my tongue when he rolled it out of his shop. A good wash and wax will bring this ole girl back to life, and a swap out of all fluids will bring me piece of mind.

Over all, the bike is a diamond in the rough, and I'm especially happy that I only had to give $8500 for the bike. I plan on spending some money on 'er to bring back the shine, and replace some of the tarnished chrome.

Here's a few questions for you all; Is it possible to buy the paint from Harley, or match the paint, so I can get the rear fender re-painted? Also, are all the chrome parts, with the issues I listed above, still readily available? I think I covered most of the highlights, and welcome any questions or suggestions. Here's a few pics I shot after I got it unloaded and popped off the bags and shield...... Hope you enjoy!

Great find! Should not have a problem finding a painter to do the fender, ther are some awesome artists out there. I would think the chrome pieces shouldn't be an issue. If you can't find new or new old stock, you could get the rechromed.

Enjoy the ride!

Welcome to the ownership of one of the best bikes harley has ever produced, ie: The ENTIRE FXR Family of bikes!

I hope you enjoy your adventure and experience!

Tell us your story, how and why did you decide on an FXR?

With regards to painting your fender, when you are ready to take it off your bike find a great local painter and have it matched, which any great painter could and will be able to do.  It just requires a "profectionist" and a patient personality to get it done.

A few years back I decided to put a 19" front wheel/tire on my FXR2 (thus I replaced the 21" tire/wheel) and to make the visual transformation complete I purchased a brand new FXR3 "primed only" front fender and gave it and my existing "red" front fender to be matched, it took him 3 weeks and many attempts only to realize the base color for the "arresting red" color uses a "gold" base instead of what he thought was a "silver" base, once he figured that out I received a perfect match.  So my point to you is that HD won't provide you either the color code or will paint your fender for you without charging you a "huge" amount, so you are better off trying out a "local" painter and being relentless for him/her to match it perfectly.

Regards,

Tim
