California Covered Bridges Tours.....
« on: February 12, 2012, 02:43:23 AM »

I came across this link on the Pashnit Forum awhile ago.....  http://www.dalejtravis.com/cblist/cbca.htm   I've been to (and across) a few of these bridges but some I didn't even know about.  I thought it'd be an interesting theme for some rides this year......contacted a few friends, laid out a route and the first day is history.

Andy, Don & Carol all rode over from the bay area yesterday and spent the night at our home.  Jeff rode over this morning, showing up at about 7:45 a.m. in time for the 8:00 a.m. departure time.

Don & Carol trying to get their Nolan N-103 helmets paired correctly (he can hear her, but she can't hear him).  By the way Don,  Terrie and I had the same problem the last 20-25 miles this evening.....I could hear her, but she coudn't hear me).  Not sure what that was all about.  We just turned them of.  As we exited the off ramp here by the house, we turned them back on and we re-connected and could both hear each other. :nixweiss:

We rode out Grant Line all the way to Folsom.  Took a slight detour through Old Town.....for the benafit of our out of town guests to have a peek.  Moved on up Auburn-Folsom Rd. to Auburn.  We had plans to stop at Edelweiss House of Super Omelettes for breakfast.  It's one of our regular breakfast stops when we're headed up the mountain that way.  And never fail to meet some interesting people.

I met this ol' guy that had finished his breakfast about the time that we did.  He had an old bike that had more than 250k miles on it.  He said it started life as a Yamaha.  Fenders from a BSA, fuel tank was made in England, etc. He also shared with us about his frustrations of to little of light at night in the mountains, but he solved that problem........he added a second headlight up on top.  Not just any headlight.  As he twisted the left hand grip, the new headlight would turn left or right as needed, depending on which way he was turning at night back up in the woods......

Leaving Auburn behind, we head up Hwy. 49 through Grass Valley and Nevada City to the first covered bridge on our list today.....

The first covered bridge on our list is just outside of Nevada City.  It was a covered bridge for years however, was bought by an Interior Decorator and artist (oil paintings) and her husband and they converted it to their home.  They named their new home, simply enough, The Bridge.  When they bought it, it had been being used as a garage and had an old flat bed truck sitting in it that was broke down and basically abandoned......that and covered in spider webbs.

This home is on a very narrow, twisty, steep road and not much of any place for five bikes to pull over.......except right into their driveway.  The gate was open so I snapped a pic of the front entry of the home.....

As we were getting ready to pack up and leave, after snapping the above photos, a gentlemen came out of the gate (we thought to chase us off his property) and inqured. I explained that we were doing a "California covered bridges tour" and showed him my list and some print outs of the bridges that we planned on visiting this day.  He said that a lot of people stop to take pictures but was fascinated that we were riding a series of covered bridges and invited us into their home to view and take pics on the inside.  I gladly accepted and followed him back through the gate.....  As I entered the front door and wiped my feet, I quickly asked him if he minded if I took these pics and posted them on an internet motorcycle forum.  I snapped this view from just inside the front door....

Besides being amazed at this home, I was also very impressed with the oil paintings (see Albert Einstein on the left, in the photo above) and inqured about those.

His wife is the interior decorator that designed the home and is also the artist that does the oil paintings and, as a matter of fact, she was busy painting one at that time......further down through the home near the left wall.

Here he is pointing to a picture of himself, that his wife painted many years ago, when he was much younger (she's sitting at her new work, just to the right of this photo being taken)....

Here are a number of photos of this home that I found on the net  (after clicking on these links, then click on each photo to enlarge the photo).....

Continuing on up Hwy. 49 as the weather is clearing, to our next covered bridge stop at Oregon Creek Covered Bridge....

There's the CVO krew......Don & Carol, Terrie, Andy and Jeff down on the bridge....

There's been a lot of gold pulled out of this river.......and a lot more remains......get your pans. ;D

and for those of you that were at the Tahoe GTG, you'll remember the live entertainment provided by Jeff on the riverboat......and here he is again.....

Next stop for us is the Oregon Creek Covered Bridge.....the oldest on the list of covered bridges.  I can remember, as a child, riding in a car across this bridge (before the newer bridge was built).  Later, it was still open to traffic however, it just went to a park and beach along the river and on the other side.  Within the past few years, they've blocked off both sides to traffic and it's now open to foot traffic only.

We had a great time today.  We experienced much more than any of us expected and we're all looking forward to visiting the other covered bridges in the future. :2vrolijk_21:

We turn back south on Hwy. 49 through North San Juan headed for our next covered bridge....turning right onto Pleasant Valley Rd. to Bridgeport Covered Bridge.  None of us had ever been on this road before and it proved to be a real treat for riding!

I saw the sign on the bottom right as we slowed to make the right turn.  However, I didn't read the sign on the bottom left until I downloaded the pics onto my computer....

The Wells Fargo Express office of 1853.....

a great motorcycle road....the signs tell us it's going to be a great ride.....

I've been successful.  My goal is to try to take all of you along......especially those that don't have the riding weather or scenery that we have.  Not bragging and not taking it for granted......the Nor Cal krew are often talking about how greatful we are to live here.  We really are blessed and we appreciate it and want to share it with all of you! :2vrolijk_21:

Riding down out of Cherokee, Terrie was leading and it was narrow, tight, steep, twisties......another great motorcycle road

old trucks and farm equipment....

This guy was on one of those motorcycle ventures where they have to ride to certain destinations and take a picture of their bike in front of the location.  He turned out to know a thing or two about framing the subject for taking photos (he was laying on the ground to get some of our shots) and was very comfortable behind the camera....

This guy is looking for an acting job  :huepfenlol2:

There is another little covered bridge about two miles up the road.  The list says it's on private property and about 200 yds. off the road and hard to see from the road.  We rode up and down that road at the point indicated, even stopped and asked a local that was at her mailbox.......she didn't know anything about another covered bridge in the area.  She ended our conversation by telling me "now you have me curious.....I want to go with you guys" ;D  We never found it and the sun was going down and we're a couple of hours from Sacramento and ever further for those from the bay area.  Time to get on that highway and roll....

the Sutter Buttes...

and rice paddys....

Gridley....

Our last stop.  We split up and headed different directions not long after this restroom stop.  A great ride, a full day, great friends and open roads we'd never rode before.  The weather Gods looked out for us.  While it looked very ominus several times through out the day......we stayed dry all day! :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

I'll continue on this thread as we visit other covered bridges of Nor Cal and then those in other parts of the state.  A journey we're lookin forward to!

On our way back to the highway from the last bridge we came upon a car rolled over.  Several cars arrived before us and those drivers waved us on through.  The car had been traveling in the same direction that we were traveling however, the skid marks were from the left side of the road (the on coming traffic side), back across the road and into the ditch and fence on our right.

I told Terrie that it looked like the driver was texting or something and all of a sudden realized they were on the wrong side of the road and over corrected.....but it's all speculation on my part.  However, doing a google search this morning......looks like that may be exactly what happened.  The only thing that's puzzeling is they said she was going "slightly" over the speed limit.  The lenght of the skid marks and then rolling over at the end of those skid marks, I'd say she was going well over the speed limit (30 mph).

We were probably the only ones that got through.  Within 100 feet of passing the roll over, we noticed the fire truck and ambulance coming.  The report says the road was closed for several hours.  Well, nobody was hurt so that's a good thing......could have been an innocent motorcyclist. :nixweiss:

Thanks for sharing your ride with us. I was surprised by the high toll prices on the Bridgeport bridge back then - $6.00 in 1862 was a lot of money ! We have a bunch of covered bridges around here and I've often thought of doing a "bridge picture tour". The civil war battlefield tour is on our bucket list too. Maybe this year...

Just looking at the covered bridge list in detail.  Several of these bridges are at an amusement park (Disneyland, etc.) across a swimming pool at a hotel, and are pedestrian bridges (and always have been).  I don't think those bridges will be a part of our quest to cover all the covered bridges in Calif. (auto bridges or were auto bridges).

http://www.dalejtravis.com/cblist/cbca.htm

T'was and awesome ride and another great day spent with everyone.  I am truly blessed to have signed up on this board and met the people I have because of it.  :2vrolijk_21:

JC, I got a glimpse of that last covered bridge on our way out.  It was about 300 yards past that truck we saw sitting out in the field.  The top of the bridge was just about level with the brush line making it hard to spot, but I think it was a bit yellow in color.  The top wasn't much higher than the road we were on.  Wish I had a way to pull the image out of my head and post it here for ya.  :nixweiss:

Great way to break in the ridding year, great shots, great ride report, great people, great food... gonna have to just have to start callin' me Tony cuz all I have to say is "They're great!"

Think it was somewhere around 368 Miles for me over a 14 hr day and probably spent at least 12 of those hrs in the saddle.  Best place to be.  :bananarock:

Great report!  Sure would like to do a ride like that sometime.  I especially like the house built on the covered bridge.  They certainly didn't scrimp on materials in that place.  The I Beams were impressive and the art world class.  Nice.  Thanks for sharing y'all.   :2vrolijk_21:

Just looking at the covered bridge list in detail.  Several of these bridges are at an amusement park (Disneyland, etc.) across a swimming pool at a hotel, and are pedestrian bridges (and always have been).  I don't think those bridges will be a part of our quest to cover all the covered bridges in Calif. (auto bridges or were auto bridges).

http://www.dalejtravis.com/cblist/cbca.htm

If you go to the link and click on the numbers in blue on the left, it'll show you photos of each bridge.

Thanks JC.... will have to look on Google to see if there are any covered bridges in Arizona.
Keep up the good work.

Carole and I had a great day on the tour. We enjoy riding through the rural areas and the gold country is always nice because of the foothills and the history of the area. The different animals that people have can be interesting. (Forgot my camera.)

Didn't see the inside of the Bridge home in person but the pics of it were great. All the pics in the thread were good. I especially like the one where it looks like I don't have any teeth. Thanks.

Of course the other riders are the best part of the tour. Jeff finally reappeared again.  Got to see Andy three times in the last month.

Second guessed the GPS on the way home. Of course it was right again.

Got home, had tomato soup, went to bed.

Don & Carol showed up at the house at about 8:00 a.m. this morning.  Carol's a real trooper.  She worked till late last night then gets up at 5:00 a.m. to ride to Elk Grove and be there by 8 am.  Then rides all day long today and no whinning or complaining.....just sucks it up and goes with the flow.  She's got my respect! :2vrolijk_21:

Here's our little Maltese Molly, as we were getting ready to go.  Just to early in the morning for her to even wake up...

Don & Carol both wired to one controller :huepfenlol2:

And we're off for another weekend of covered bridges tour.  And our first bridge on the list today.......just a few miles from the house but it is on the list....

Where we met the most interesting family!  He rides a Sporster 1200 and his daughter has a Sporster as well.   The thing that I was really fascinated about is that they crused to Alaska five times in their 26' Sea Ray Sundancer.....the whole family! :o

Soon we roll on to Murphy.  The whole damn town was walking the streets totally buzzed.  It is the Murphy's Wine Weekend and everybody goes from wine tasting to wine tasting with their glasses in their hand.  It was just really odd...and damn funny.

This guy drives up and down the street all day, playing his trumpet.  He's been doing this the last few years that we've gone to Murphy.  He's actually pretty good at it, too.  Can't imagine what he spends in gas at $4.48 a gallon.

Ironstone Vinyards.......the last place Terrie and I saw Buddey Guy and BB King together.  It's about the nicest out door venue we've ever been to.

The trees all think it's spring time.....they're in full bloom

passing through Oakdale....

Which was voted once again the Cowboy Capital of The World by the PBR (Professional Bull Riders Assoc.)....  who would ever think it.....in California. :nixweiss:

and this cowboy has a full size matchbox series.... ;D

moving on down the road, we passed through Waterford, headed to Roberts Ferry Covered Bridge....

and there's Roberts Ferry Covered Bridge down in the river bed, off in the distance....

Again, we found ourselves on roads that none of us had ever been on before and rode through some beautiful contryside.  For the most part, the roads were in pretty decent shape but there were a few rough spots...

We made our way to our motels.  Terrie and I stayed at the Best Western in Mariposa however, they're undergoing a major exterior renovation so they only had a few rooms available.  By the time Don made reservations, they were booked up so Don & Carol stayed across the street at the Comfort Inn.  The renovations at the BW are going to go a long way towards improving the appearance of this hotel.....it really has pop now. :2vrolijk_21:

Jon (Jonga) showed up at the hotel at about 7:45 a.m. this morning.....left his home at 6 a.m. so he made good time.  Don & Carol walked over and then we all walked down to the Sugar Pine Restaurant for breakfast. Great place to eat.   Mariposa is a town that was established back during the California gold rush and there's a lot of history there.

I think it was about 10 a.m. before we finally got on the road to our next covered bridge.  California has a lot of hills and a lot of mountains and.....I suppose....our share of California hillbillys.... :huepfenlol2:

Being in the hills and looking down in the big valley below......it was totally socked in with fog.  I'm glad that we were above it. :2vrolijk_21:

and more of those typical California highway signs.....

another one of those hillbilly havens.... :)

Jon and Don....

More of those signs.....

and we're certainly not going to let a little snow stop us.  We have another California covered bridge to get to.....

The little lake is still frozen over....

Jon making himself right at home in there.....but no temperpedic here. :huepfenlol2:

We were very fortunate that there just weren't many people in the park at this time of year.  No crowds, no long lines.....it was very nice.

In case there was any doubt about these cabins not being the real deal.  When we looked in the windows, you could see day light between all the logs on the other walls.  Of course it has a fire place.  So, depending on where you were at in this cabin, it'd either be super hot or super cold. :nixweiss:
Check out the notches in these logs.....didn't exactly line up with machined precision.

This is the texting office.... ;)

Saw an old Dodge Power Wagon in the parking lot.  It was converted into a crew cab.  One of those "go anywhere, do anything" kind of vehicles....

Time to roll on...........

JC and Terrie planned it and Carole and I really enjoyed this ride.  We left a drizzling Fremont at 6:00 am and arrived in Elk Grove at 8:00 am.

Of course I forgot my camera battery charger and I need a second battery. So I only have pics of the beginning.

The Sierra foothills are gorgeous and exciting because of the hilly terrain, the farms, orchards, vineyards, wineries, lakes, rivers, trees, old towns and the variety of livestock/animals.

Pardon any duplicated photos.

Get your "Motor Running Head", out on the highway!

What we've got here is... failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it... well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men

Why do many of these photos have "photobucket" across them now?
