Running a rear car tire???? Darkside!!!!
« on: February 28, 2014, 02:33:23 PM »

Has anyone had any experience with this?  I buddy brought it to my attention and found this interesting.  Run a no flat tire on a Harley so you never have a flat and get awesome grip he says.  Let me know your thoughts.  He just had a Khumo 195/55-16 put on and will keep me posted on his feedback.

That's interesting....of all my years of riding, never even considered this.  I would think that the car tire would not operate or is designed to operate the same as a motorcycle tire.  Just different geometry involved there to consider.  I read the information on the site...does look like folks are getting quite a bit of mileage out of the rear tire going this route.  I believe I'll just stick to my Dunlops for now....

Thanks for posting and let us know what your friend with the Khumo thinks after doing this.

Don't even consider it if you like to take a turn now and then.

It's not a very well thought out idea, and anyone who understands the design differences between tires for cars and tires for motorcycles wouldn't do this.

People have been doing this sort of thing since the last century on the early choppers, before motorcycle tire manufacturers came out with legitimate wide tires.  It wasn't smart way back then, and it is even less smart these days considering the power and speed capabilities of today's motorcycles.

Here is a copy of their disclaimer at the bottom.......

Disclaimer: We do not advocate the use of car tires on motorcycles. We are only offering other people's experiences and it is up to each individual to decide the merits of car tires on motorcycles for themselves.

If you choose to put a car tire on a motorcycle, you do so at your own risk.

I ran into a guy at Daytona a few yrs back.  He was using a VW tire on the rear of his Goldwing.  He said he got much greater milage out of it versus the stock tires.  However,  he was running with a sidecar which (to me),  made it a safer idea than the handling he might have had otherwise with just a two  wheeler.  I wouldn't run a car tire on a bike.

True dat.... can't remember the aftermarket builder (somebody help my "oletimers" :D with this guys name... he used the frame to contain the oil) but before there were the wide tires specific to motorcycles he was using car tires for his wide tire bikes.... and they weren't cheap. :o

Personally, I would never even consider putting a car tire on a bike. But, is there any evidence out there of catastrophic failures, wrecks, deaths, etc.  due to running a car tire ?  Seems like if there was, there would be more info, especially on the internet. Just curious. I've owned a couple of goldwings through the years and that's one of the hottest topics on their site, but again, no stories about failures. ??

The use of a car rear tire has become somewhat of a cult following with some Goldwing riders.  Mainly on the 1800's.  I personally would rather not tempt fate, if it belongs on a car leave it on the car do not put it on your motorcycle to save a few bucks.

Maybe that's because the guy riding the bike that had the failure is no longer around to post his story? :nixweiss:  I think you'll find that there a lot more people talking and posting about this than there are people actually doing it, so if you're looking for a lot of real data the odds are you won't find it.

As for failures, I don't think anyone suggested that the car tire (assuming they used one with an appropriate speed and load rating) would necessarily blow out or suffer some other catastrophic failure.  BUT, a car radial is designed to keep the tread flat on the road, and that is assisted by having very flexible sidewalls.  The lean angle of the typical motorcycle would exceed the ability of that design to cope, possibly resulting in excessive sidewall flexing and heat buildup or perhaps excessive wear of the shoulders of the tread.  What I do know is that the handling will be squirrelly in anything other than straight line riding.  If you want to do nothing but straight superslabs then yes the car tire will most likely give you a lot more miles.  If you have to carve many curves at speed you will quickly wish you had the correct tires on the bike.

Gotta agree with all the old-school folks.  Car tires are for cars, trailers are for boats.  'Course there was a time that Goodyear said there was no market for their tires on motorcycles.  Kinda like my Dunlops a little more after that fiasco.

i wouldn't do it myself, kinda in the camp that car tires are for cars and motorcycle tires are for bikes, but these guys don't seem to be having any problems in the twisties....
