Title: Checking fan operation

Ok guys, I think I’ve got the dreaded water pump failure, 32k on it, what is the correct process for checking the fan operation and the pump to see if their working ? Tried rolling the throttle both ways and got nothing, and yes I know I need the manual, don’t have one yet. Thanks

Ignition ON, engine OFF, hold throttle at half throttle or more until fans start running.  At that point the fans and pump should run until you turn off the ignition.  Click on the attachment for a diagnostic routine.

if you go to the harley service information portal, you can lookup several things including owner's and parts manuals for just about any bike.  if you're out of the us, you can get a subscription which will allow full access, but us here in the us are limited (but hey, it's free!).

Thanks guys, I’m not getting nothing when trying this, neither fans are coming on, or the pump, any other ideas ?  Bike is getting picked up on Monday, but if it’s something simple, would rather do it myself, I do have the esp.

Check your fuse block.  There is a 10 amp fuse for the cooling system, and there is a relay for the cooling system.  Either could be your culprit.

p.s. I rolled my throttle backwards to get it to work...and it did!  I was also surprised how much backward roll there was...

Cooling system 10 amp fuse was blown, replaced it, and still can’t get anything to come on. Is the relay an HD part only ?  Would like to know what caused it to blow.

I'm just guessing but I wouldn't be surprised if the pump failed and caused the fuse to blow.  Disconnect the pump from the wiring harness, then try the test again to see if the fans run (check the fuse first, it probably blew again when you tried to test with the pump connected).  The pumps have been trouble prone, to say the least.

Bike is back finally, it was the water pump. Thanks for the help guys.
