103 Heads
« on: January 06, 2006, 09:01:23 PM »

All,

As many of you know I called Harley directly and spoke to Rusty Dwire who got an engineer to tell me which I passed to you that are heads had a tolerance of .550 lift.

Harry...FYI, HD is also telling the shop techs .550 on the clearance.  Last week measured some in the shop and got a .620, so I'm convinced that the Zippers info is correct.  I think you're right on with the "built in cushion" factor from HD.

I just had mine checked for 580 intake lift cams and they were good past 600 lift. Has anyone checked the clearance for cam lift before you might damage the valve guides/seals. Maybe that is where they are coming up with 550? I had my shop cut mine down a little just to be safe.

Big time I would think that is where the MOCO came up with the .550 number. But again they all won't be the same, close but not the same. So to be safe I would pull the heads.

Drag racers and "known" engine builders do not tell there secreats.....that's common knowledge at the track.

During our (the West Coast CVO Owners ride) stop at Freedom Cycles this past Sept. when Brad Yuhl addressed the group he said as much.

hey dawg here is a quote from you regarding the 103 heads

"Now you can go back and ask your good ole bud that gives you all this info and ask him to check it out again. I can tell you my information came directly from HARLEY DAVIDSON POWERTRAIN OPERATIONS!!!!!! Yes I guess I have some very good INSIDE INFORMATION! I also have some VERY GOOD FRIENDS!"

that was you assuring everyone that the springs would only handle a .550 lift
oh yeah, another one of your witty quotes lets not forget

"SCIENCE AND SKILL WILL ALWAYS OVER COME IGNORANCE AND SUPERSTITION"

I guess you could just say your ignorance is bliss, huh?

then their is the other quote

"Timken bearing lets see it is only rated to 100 ft lbs of tq and that is by Harley not Zippers"

I am still waiting to see what hole you pulled that one out of and support it with some documentation and not just some VERY GOOD FRIENDS statement!!!!

O'fender, o'f**king chill.  Dawg cited specs from a mftr.  Right or wrong that's not a bad source for data.  That it might be wrong and then is later proven to be so doesn't mean he didn't make an effort to find out information for others.  That's the kind of effort that few offer and many take advantage of.  That others used it as a source to work from, compare to, and verify against is just part the information gathering process.  None of it is "ignorant."  In fact the only thing that really is here is thinking it appropriate (or even sporting?) to call someone such in this context.  You had no reason to take it or make it personal.  Play well with everyone or take a seat.  Period.

This is all very entertaing.  As for educational?  I have found that the dealers will tell you anything and it usually is incorrect and misleading.  I will never quote a dealer again, except to reveal his ignorance.  Most can change and install parts, but most don't know the performance facts.

Here is some new info I found on the stock 103 heads,  tifwiw,  but I saw on another news group where a guy when ahead and used the domed 103+ stroker pistons in the stock cvo heads and they clayed out fine and the bike runs great .

here is the link:
http://groups.msn.com/HarleyTechTalk/tc88fathead.msnw?action=get_message&mview=0&ID_Message=824887&LastModified=4675556544222232777

Also, I sent him an email and this is what I got back:

Yessir, that's correct. Clay'd everything, and the
initial results are posted in the dyno section of HTT.

I heard this works from a local wrench here in Central Ohio. He recently quit working for the local HD Stealer and started his own business. He's HD PHD Certified and was offered a position with the MOCO before deciding to do his own thing. He's know as an EFI/Race Tuner wiz.......

I'll see if he has any dyno sheets we can post.

I read in the other forum that the heads used are the ones that come in the SE 103 kit in the SE catalog which are not the ones that come stock on CVO's (they must be 103+ heads)

to whom it may concern.
i have the stock harley 103 kit.
it has all of the same components as the cvo 103's
except i do not have a hydaulic clutch.
the heads are exactly the same. so are the cams, pistons, etc.
a while back, i posted specs on the cams, and the valve spring tolerances.
i looked for them, but could not find them.
they came off of a harley dealer website.
the cam specs were 530/530 and the valve springs would tolerate a 575 lift.
the heads are nothing like the se-pro 103+ heads.
when i changed out my cams, i also changed out the springs.
i had the heads street ported and set the squish so they were off anyway, and it was not expensive to do.
if anyone is thinking of going higher then 575 lift, it only makes sense to me to change out the springs. these bikes aint cheap!!!
