We left Sacramento and headed to Jim's shop to have some mods done on the new SESG before we left for our trip.
-
Then it was on over to Hollister to get a seat custom made by Corbin....
-
It got up to 110F as we headed south on Hwy. 101. We were constantly stopping to re-wet our cool vest and cool snakes and replenish the water in our portable misters but we pushed on. We ended up in Mojave, Calif. that night, where it had already cooled down to 93F.
We left at 6:30 a.m. the next day and were at the Paris Hotel & Casino on the strip in Vegas before noon. It only reached 93F on Sat. and the news said they're in a "cool down" this week and the forecasted high of only 93F all week!
-
I convinced them to let us stay parked in the valet area (with a nice tip). I have to say that the Paris has one of the nicest pool areas of all the casinos that I've been to. :2vrolijk_21: Worked for us.
-
Leaving Vegas behind, we headed towards St. George, Utah.
-
From my perspective...
-
We stopped at the Moapa Indian Reservation for breakfast. Seemed to be the place of choice for the local bikers. :2vrolijk_21:
-
As we were about to leave, I noticed a little Maltese that looked just like our lil' Molly come walking down the highway......
-
She looked just like Molly and after a near death experience with a pick up truck where the driver acted like he could have cared less.....I was off on a mission to locate the dog's owner. After about half an hour of knocking on doors, we finally located the dog's owner down the highway a quarter mile.
-
Soon, we're back on the road towards Zion National Park.
-
This route took us through some interesting gorges and mountain passes....
-
It's the Virgin River Gorge....
-
Utah is really proud of their state......the state line sign was about 2' square. Very small compared to most state signs, I almost missed it. :nixweiss:
-
A shot of Terrie's favorite tree.....the Joshua tree.
-
We stopped by Zion Harley Davidson to find them closed.
-
Stopped by a little store for some Gatorade. Noticed that they have some real dogs driving around this little town. ;D
-
Very interesting and scenic mountains around every turn.
-
and some nice homes built in those mountains.....
-
We finally made it to Zion. This is a place that everybody should visit at least once in their life.......just incredable.
-
Just misc. shots taken inside the park.
-
The highway runs across the southern end of the park and through a tunnel that's the longest that I've ever been through at 1.1 miles. But to really enjoy this park, you should take one of the free shuttle buses that run every five minutes. You can get off at any of the stops and spend as long as you'd like, before getting on another shuttle. The full loop is 1 hour 20 minutes.
-
We took advantage of the park and did the shuttle tour.
-
But I can tell Terrie's ready to go back......
-
And I'm ready, too. Where the hell is that bus.....it's been 7 minutes! :huepfenlol2:
-
Another shot of the incredable views in this park....
-
another....
-
.
-
Terrie gets a shot of me....
By the way, these sun shirts that we bought with the vents under the arms, down to the wrists are super light weight and have worked really well on this trip. Not a fashion statement but definately functional. :2vrolijk_21:
-
The line up, waiting our turn to go through the 1.1 mile tunnel that has a number of turns in it.
-
Terrie takes the lead.....
-
and finally out the other end.....to some more very unusual looking rock formations....
-
We stopped at a restaurant for lunch at a restaurant in Mt. Carmel (where the federal gov't raided the polygamist compound and took all those kids). Terrie was able to photograph the humingbirds at the feeder.
-
And a shirt that was for sale in the restaurant.....that seems to poke fun at the very thing that has brought attention to that community.
-
and now we're headed to the north rim of the Grand Canyon.
-
I was very suprised at the altitude of the north rim. One area is over 8,500 ft.
-
A shot of the lodge (just outside the gate at the north rim) that we stayed at last night.
-
The food in the restaurant was great. Can't say the same for the cabin, but the view from our front door was very nice.
-
Terrie, relaxing in the lodge last night.
-
It was very cold when we got up this morning. Full leathers and we were still cold. Got to the entrance to the North Rim and noticed fresh (not even dirty yet) snow on the side of the road.
-
She thinks she's ready for this day. :huepfenlol2:
I'll post more tomorrow night.
-
Glad you guys are having fun. Be safe and keep cool!
-
Great pics JC!! :2vrolijk_21: Glad you were able to get the cute "Molly lookalike" back to her home! Enjoy the rest of your trip!!
-
WOW, WOW, WOW
Looks like a great time - two thumbs up!
Ride safe partner - have fun!
-
We arrived early, at the Lodge on the north rim, yesterday.
You can tell by the two jackets that it's still pretty cold.........low 50s. I was feeling more like low 30s. I guess I've been taking those leg fairings for granted for a few years. :nixweiss:
-
We went straight in to the lodge restaurant to eat. This is the view from our table.
-
The self shot......
-
and Terrie, down on the point.
-
a shot of the lodge....
-
We met a Danish couple. He asked "who rides the blue one?". They told us about how it's so cheap and affordable for them to come to America but that he'd never be able to own a Harley (although they claimed that Demark has the largest Harley dealership in Europe) because they're so expensive over there. :nixweiss:
-
Great pictures - Zion is on my list of places to visit. :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:
-
We're off, down the road to monument valley. An increable ride from the north rim to monument valley.....
Terrie said that it was her best day of riding ever. The weather cooperated, too.......about mid 70s to mid 80s so we were able to ride in t-shirts after it warmed up a bit.
-
We saw more redrock in the past two days than I've saw in my life.
-
A lonely road, early in the morning but we were enjoying that, too.
-
Gatorade stop at Cliff Dwellings (that's the name of this little community).
-
looks like a great place to visit, thanks for sharing
-
and we're off again.....Terrie leading for awhile.
-
Navajo Nation......red rock for ever.
-
great pics..and you sure know how to break in a new bike!!!!
Ride safe!
-
and the day went on.......
-
Terrie pulling up the rear, again.
-
A look back at the valley that we'd just spent the last two hours riding across.
-
Looks great, ride safe and keep the pictures coming. I've never been there, So I really appreciate you sharing your experience.
-
There's a story behind this picture.
We were stopped on the side of the road where the Indians sell their crafts. An older couple comes walking up and he tells us that he had to sell his Heritage due to his bad legs, etc. etc.
Terrie asks if one of them would take a picture of us. She says "oh......he'll do it......but you never know what you're going to get with him taking it." He takes the camera and backs up as she goes on to tell us that he loves photograph and he's a clown. He kind of squats down...as she continues to talk about him. He then kind of kneels down. Then he's kind of laying on his stomach......then he spins around and laying on his back he says "gotta get the top of the peak in the shot". :huepfenlol2:
-
He did get a good shot......kind of different to say the least.
I quickly bent over to take the camera from him as Terrie and his wife help him up. :huepfenlol2: All this while 20-30 tourists stand around and watch. :huepfenlol2: I think you would have had to been there. :nixweiss:
-
More red rock as we're on our way to Monument Valley.
-
A change in color as we come upon Black Mesa. Black Mesa is full of coal and they actually mine it and haul it out of there on an electric train.
-
Kayenta, Az. where the cows, goats and dogs have free reign....
You can see by the signs, this is an intersection of two highways. We stopped here to eat. Terrie and I were the only two white people in the place......all Indians. Some of the older ones were talking in their native language....very interesting.
We watched the cows for half an hour or so.....wonder back and forth across the highway at will....
-
Soon the road leads us to Monument Valley....
-
and another incredable ride....
-
another one of those places that you have to visit at least once in your life....
-
Very odd how these rock formations just stick right up out of the ground.
-
and the skys are all cloudy all day.
-
Up behind this lodge is where the John Wayne cabin is at......they used in one of his movies.
-
Looks fake.....but it's the real deal.
-
Terrie getting ready to ride.....
-
Riding back down out of the canyon.....
-
There were a lot of these kind of views out there.....
-
and these too....
-
We spent the night in Tuba, Az. last night. This is the original trading post, next door.
-
We learned that motels are far and few between out here. You better plan it well.
-
A shot of the women's hut. Don't remember what they call them, but the sign said that the men spent most of their time in one while the women and kids in another. This is a replica of the women's.
We're off to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon today. Will stop by the dealership in Bellemont (isn't that where Bill and Ann bought their copper top?) before going on to Sedona......where we have reservations for tonight.
-
Great pics of your ride guys. :2vrolijk_21: How's the new SESG doing JC? spyder
-
Outstanding shots of an obviously great trip! I am envious. Always enjoy your ride reports. Terrie is an inspiration to my wife Kandy.
-
Keep um coming and ride safe and have fun.
-
Fantastic you two. Bringing back some memories and I'm really enjoying your shots and commentary. Big country w/ lots of red rocks and blue sky!! Dig it!
-
Great pictures ;D Continue having fun & be safe. We'll see you both next week :orange: :orange: :orange: :orange:
-
Great photos you guys, brings back a lot of memories of our travels through the Southwest.
JC I was wondering how your 110 is performing at higher elevations? Mine did not like the altitude.
-
:2vrolijk_21: Totally friggin awesome!! Thanks for sharing the pics
-
Sweet ride!... I got 2 friends shipping thier bikes and are picking them up at PASHA's port in San Diego... they'll be riding the midwest and coming back down PCH... 23 days on the road!
I'm gonna try for next year....
-
Great photos you guys, brings back a lot of memories of our travels through the Southwest.
JC I was wondering how your 110 is performing at higher elevations? Mine did not like the altitude.
We always try to bring everybody along on our journeys through our ride reports and comments. :2vrolijk_21: Do that because we enjoy yours and others so much.......just trying to give back. :2vrolijk_21:
Chris, my bike is running great! We left Calif. in 110F temps and I didn't experience any heat issues. Riding into the North Rim there's one area that's 8,750 ft. elevation and I didn't experience any issues there, either. This bike has got me wondering to the point that I called Jim and asked him "why am I not having the heat issues that I keep reading about? Do I have a freak bike? And if that's the case, then why? I mean that'd be scary, too". I just can't say what the deal is.
The bike has got hot to the point where the heat management system kicked in a couple of times but I never felt any excesive heat coming up from the motor that bothered me physically. I mean I don't think it runs any hotter than my 103". :nixweiss:
As of this writing........I think I have one hell of a machine! The best Harley I've ever owned. Now we all know that could change at any time but I'm going to run with the positive for as far as I can.
Now, back to sharing this ride with all of you..........
-
We stopped at one of the Navajo Trading Posts first thing this morning....as we headed to the South Rim. Terrie was thinking that the crafts are not really hand made by Navajo Indians.....that they're commercially produced in a foreign country.
As I worked my way to the back of the trading post, a very slight movement off to the side caught my perpheral vision. There was a lady sitting there very quietly weaving this huge blanket (wall covering? What is it? What do they call it?). I watched her for about fifteen minutes. She had a number of different colors of yarn that she was working at the same time. What I found most interesting is that she's able to carry of a conversation while she's weaving that pattern. Up till then, I assumed that they had to count each weave to get the pattern to be consistent.
I asked her how long she had to study weaving before she could just take off on her own and weave a full blanket without supervision. She told me that it's her culture and in her family since she can remember but that she was weaving and knitting intricate patterns by herself at about 17 yrs. old. That she'd done it all her life but that she started doing it full time (no other job) about eight years ago.
She told me the name of the pattern, how long it will take her to make that blanket (it was weeks, but I don't remember exactly how long she said) and that it was a custom ordered piece that was selling for $13,000.
-
This is the side that she's already finished...........just to give you an idea of the intricacy of the pattern.
-
We arrived at the South Rim early....very little traffic. Still a bit cool (and we were so worried about heat on this trip), so we still had to keep the jackets on.
-
Terrie's very first view of the GC.
-
This is looking back east, up river in the canyon.
-
She kept tellin me to back up a little further......but I wasn't buyin it.
-
The ONLY way to see the Grand Canyon is by bike :orange: :orange: Awesome views! Thank you again JC & Terrie for sharing ;D
-
And she wasn't going for the oakid-doke, either.
-
and just some incredable views.......mostly for those who have never been there.
If you look closely, you can see the Colorado River in the very bottom of the canyon.
-
and if you couldn't see it in that picture, here it is from the same location with the zoom focus.
-
another one of those self shots.....
-
and another shot that just shows the depth and magnatude of this canyon....
-
.
-
.
-
JC - If you guys are staying anywhere near Flagstaff, be sure to check out the ski lift ride to the top at Arizona Snowbowl just outside of town. My brother-in-law JR Murray manages the place and the view from the top is one of the prettiest on the planet! You can see down to Phoenix and up to the Grand Canyon. Tell him Mark Buyearly sent you.

JCZ
Thanks for the pics. WOW!
Taking notes for my trip next year. BTW the scoot looks sharp!
JW
-
We left the south rim and headed for Bellmont Harley Davidson.
We could look to the left and to the right and see that it was just pouring. It seems like we've just been missing the rain, all week. Of course we're not complaining cause it's helping to keep the temps down.
-
Some where back there behind Terrie there's a really big hole in the ground! ???
-
Terrie's very first view of the GC.
Didn't she see it from the North Rim? :nixweiss:
-
We finally arrived at Grand Canyon Harley Davidson in Bellmont.
-
I convinced the service guy to wash our bikes for us.
-
While we walked across the parking lot to the Road House.
-
This is the place where you pick your steak from the menu....
-
and you cook it yourself! :2vrolijk_21: Put your own seasonings on, cook it how ever you like it.......
-
The owner of the Road House is in to fast cars and fast bikes (and fast bar stools, too). Here's his motorcycle shop.....looks more like an operating room....
-
Here's an El Camino (a 70 I think) that's an SS 454.
-
And a project that he's currently working on...
-
He has a thing for those SS 454! :2vrolijk_21:
-
They weren't that common so for him to have two........he's definately a collector.
-
We met a group of riders out of Tennessee. One of them took this one......
-
Another one of his toys......
-
The toy room is a part of the restaurant.......
-
another view of the Roadhouse....
-
We got done with lunch and once again, we're just missing the rain. A lot of serious thunder and lightening, though....
-
He had finished washing my bike but not Terrie's. She's thinkin it's time for a nap after a full belly. ;D
-
We got out of there and rode down Hwy. 89A, Oakcreek Canyon to Sedona.
-
Terrie's first time through this canyon and she's enjoying it....
-
Terrie, makin friends with the locals....
-
and she's learning how to work an aim and shoot camera, too! :2vrolijk_21:
-
Uptown Sedona......
I made the mistake of calling it "downtown" and one of the locals set me straight......it's uptown!
-
And she practices her photography skills on a local flower....
-
And here's a pic of the local wildlife........a lizard.
-
and a cactus that caught Terrie's eye.....
-
And another of the locals.....
Tomorrow we're going to follow Route 66 back across Arizona to Kingman. From there we'll turn north back through Vegas.
-
The Roadhouse is a cool place we stopped there with Magoo and Cvo Moe on the way back from the Grand Canyon while in Sedona. Looks like they change the car scenery around every once in a while. Karen and I had been there once before a few years back a great place to stop and eat. You two seem to be having a great trip it is nice to follow along with you. Thanks for sharing.
-
It looks like the smiles are getting bigger and bigger as your trip moves along :2vrolijk_21:
Happy to hear the 110 is doing so well for you and you aren't bothered by any of the 'issues' others have complained about.
-
JC,
I've done that exact same loop a couple of times and really love it. Thanks for sharing and bringing back such rich memories for me. It looks like you two had a GREAT time. That whole area is amazing to ride in and see. Can't wait to see what you have planned for us at SJB.
Mark
-
Hey you two!! Enjoying all the pics...what a great trip!!! Just an fyi....the last post supposedly by me.... was by Roger  ....he's gonna have to quit posting under my name >:( One of those times I forgot to log out!! :)

Absolutely nothing! It'll be kind of like this ride.......we'll just wing it. :huepfenlol2:

I think I have learned the difference between your posts and his. That's why this one gets a reply and the last one got ignored. :2vrolijk_21:
-
HaHa!!! I figured YOU would, but for folks that don't know me..... :nixweiss: Have a great rest of the trip...glad you two are missing the rain...perfect timing!!!!
-

Hey now, I ain't feeling the love here :'( Glad you are having a great time. Your pics bring back good memories of our riding around Az. a few years ago. Nice the rain has held off for you!
Don't forget to sing your "apple, peaches, punkin pie" song to Terrie.
-
We left Sedona at about 7:00 a.m. this morning. Wanted to get across the desert before it got to hot.
For those familiar with Oak Creek Canyon just north of Sedona, this is Slide Rock. When we came by here yesterday there were probably twenty or thirty people sliding down the rocks in the river.
-
and a look back down Oak Creek Canyon, back down towards Sedona, from the top.
-
We took Route 66 where ever we could.......
-
A step back in time, all along this route. :2vrolijk_21:
-
Where you get your kicks......
-
You guys remember back in the day....
-
The signs alone show the time period....
-
.
-
Check out the saloon girl hanging out of the window upstairs......
-
Grand Canyon Railroad that runs from Williams, Az. to the Grand Canyon and back.
-
What........we missed the train?
-
Terrie, riding I-40 across Az.
-
One of the old Route 66 gas stations....
-
.
-
Another old Route 66 motel. Probably the place to stay in it's day..........still only $29 a night!
-
.
-
The Mother Road......Route 66, Arizona.
-
Seligman is a popular town on Route 66, with the bikers....
-
again, a step back in time.....
-
The Supai Motel neon sign is still in working order. They have a sign that reads "Bikers Welcome" :2vrolijk_21:
-
This sign is also in working order.......and it's a great place to eat! :2vrolijk_21:
-
More on this place in a few minutes...
-
Terrie picked up a few friends along the way.....
-
.
-
And I met a friend or two, too..... :huepfenlol2:
-
She knows where she's at now! :2vrolijk_21:
-
Return To The 50's......
-
You can see it all........on Route 66. ???
-
Know this couple?
-
An original Route 66 Motel that's still operating today. I did notice that they've added air conditioners to each room.
-
Did you call for a Taxi?
-
Terrie's chattin em up with the locals.....
-
And now back to the Copper Cart for breakfast.....
-
An original old time diner that's been revamped, very clean and the food was really great. The waitress is the owner for the past two years.....her and her husband bought it and remodeled in the Pepsi theme.
-
.
-
.
-
.
-
Terrie's been shopping on Route 66.......
-
and the view out the window couldn't be better!
-
This town is full of old cars and trucks....
-
The sign doesn't look to be to old but the motel does.......
And look at the restaurant next door..... :nervous:
-
And the road signs that were common back in the 50s.
-
.
-
.
-
.
-
.
-
.
-
.
-
.
-
.
-
America's Main Street.......
-
.
-
.
-
This is what I found when I opened the door to the men's restroom.....
-
When I saw this sign, I thought it best if I didn't open the door to the women's restroom. :huepfenlol2:
-
Terrie hydrating in the shade....
-
While I nose around the back......more of those old road signs that are so full of wisdom.
-
I'm not quite old enough to remember......but I think I could guess at what this is. ???
-
All original....nothing restored. :nixweiss:
-
Greyhound stop on the Mother Road....
-
One of the new bridges as we approach Hoover Dam....(not open yet).
-
A shot of the new bridge that they're building above the dam.
-
.
-
They have cables strung everywhere......
-
and many just hanging......looks like they're waiting to be streatched across. :nixweiss:
-
We stopped for the day at the Hacienda Hotel & Casino, at the top of the hill above the dam.
We got a suite for $17.95 with the AAA discount. Believe it! And the steakhouse was equally incredable! Terrie said this is the best place that we stayed on our trip.
This is a view from our 6th floor room.....
-
And the view looking straight down. We made use of the pool and spa....
We'll probably make it home by tomorrow night. :nixweiss: It's been a great trip and we saw and done a lot! :2vrolijk_21:
-
I'm beginning to feel like I'm in the movie "Cars", especially with the tow truck pic looking like "mater"
-

See you in San Juan Baustista !
Soozie :)

JC, is not that the pot calling the kettle something? Trapperdog is right. See here: A Route 66 guide to “Cars” (http://rwarn17588.wordpress.com/2006/06/09/a-route-66-guide-to-the-cars-movie/) Then we can talk about who here resembles which character? :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

Looks like a movie for little kids. No interest here. :nixweiss:
-
Look like a movie or little kids.
Actually there are more references for adults in that movie than you could catch just by watching it once. You would probably enjoy it now that you have just ridden through there.
-
Aren't you a little old? :nixweiss:
Speaking of old, what are you doing online at 1:41 this afternoon? Home already or had to stop cause you were tired? ;)
-
JCZ and Terrie,
What a fantastic ride and beautiful pics. All I can say is thank you for sharing.
And hope that one day I to may be able to ride that ride.

Great stuff JC as always.... I really enjoy your ride reports, just wish I was able to join you 2 a little more. Glad too hear the bike ran great, what better way to break her in. Looking forward to next weekend in SJB. Congrats on new job. Guess Terri would be considered to be a seasoned pro after logging all the miles you two do together. I think thats great you all get to spend so much time on the bikes together. :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:...... Jon

JC,
Great ride report! While it reminded me of our post-Sedona ride you showed that there is so much more there to warrant a return!

Terrie picked up a few friends along the way.....

I stayed there 5 years ago and came back to Harley, somebody broke into saddle bags, stole everything.
Lucky I had cash on me, had to ride back to Las Vegas and find a leather shop and buy new jacket for trip home.
This was in December and does it get cold at night in the high desert!!! So if anyone is planning to stop, park by the doors.

What an awesome photo journal, JC...well done and thanks for sharing it all!
I've been all over the southwest (but I was much younger then), some of it on a Goldwing. It's my favorite part of the country and I miss it. Thanks for the memories!
