H-D new Electronic dip stick with temp & level
« on: May 19, 2006, 12:06:17 PM »

I just bought one of these dip sticks.  Seems a little finnicky and inconsistant. A get a lot of error messages as well as a variety of readings regarding the oil llevel.  Anyone else try out this product?

I've got one to.  Works best if you let the bike set a few minutes after its at operatiing temp.  Cold oil seemes to cause the error message.  Also, if you check it right after cutting the bike off you'll sometimes get an error.

Even if it is a piece of crap, it's stilll cool! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Great! 135.00 bling bling that misinterperts what you need to know about a 7000.00 engine. I think I will keep using the paper towels. ;D

Paper towels?? I use the nice cloths that the good folks of the CMA give me everytime I hit a rally. I do subscribe to your philosophy but there are those here who would cry heresy (Fired00d, bgregston among others) as they are the keepers of the "stealth chrome & shiny trinkets" faith ;D [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]

I got one of these yesterday...came home, put it in, and was getting an error message...cold oil, and low oil.  Checked it with the dipstick...guess what?  The dealer didn't top off my oil level when they prepared the bike.  I guess they don't know they are shipped with only 3 quarts of oil in them (another thread says this). Pressure's been good though, so no harm done.  So, topped it off, took it for a ride this evening when I got home to get the oil hot so I could get an accurate reading.  If you push the button right after shutting down, you might get an error message on the level, but the temp will show.  Mine was showing 185 degrees.  Let it sit for about 5 minutes, read it again and it was 180 and showed full (if overfull, the bar graph will flash while showing full).  I've checked it about 10 more times while cooling down and as long as the oil temp is above 160, you'll get an accurate reading on the dipstick.  Or at least that's my OC observations.  I think I'm going to like not grabbing a hot chrome dipstick, dripping oil on the exhaust...twice...I'll take pushing a button.

Plus, it's a really cool piece of bling, what with the blue light and chit   ;D [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

Yea, Dood...it's a powerful addiction, I can see that already.  I ordered a J&S lift this afternoon, just so I could get to clean chit better...it'll come in handy for doing actual WORK on it too, I suppose... ;D ;)

SEULTRA...don't fight it, man...this is a good support group. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Can anyone tell me what direction you are supposed to turn the dip stick when you remove it to add oil?  I can't find my instructions.  I remember they said something about damage turning it the wrong way. Thanks
