Garmin 2720 speed indicator is too high
« on: October 08, 2006, 12:54:04 PM »

the MPH indicator on my 2720 consistently shows a higher speed than actual (anywhere between 6 and 12mph).
before i call Garmin to see if what might be wrong (and spend an hour on the phone waiting), i thought i would see if anyone else had this problem.

at first, my speedometer on the bike. Then of course, i am thinking about the possibility that the speedometer is wrong. But, then i confirmed it riding next to my wifes car and then again at a speed watch indicator on a road, plus of course, you just know when you are going 30mph and the GPS says you are going closer to 40mph.  Everything else on the Garmin unit appears to be working.

My 2620 will show about 75 when the bike speedometer shows 70.  According to the radar reporting signs on the side of the road and timing against mile markers the GPS unit is the more accurate piece in my case.

My Quest reads,

5 mph slower that the speedo on the SEEG showed @ 60 mph
3 mph slower than the Classic shows @ 60 mph
2 mph slower than the Lowrider shows @ 60 mph
5 mph faster than the Chevy truck shows @ 60 mph
3 mph faster that the Frontier shows @ 60 mph
Exactly the same as the Powerstroke!

So go figure, I believe the GPS. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

My 2820 consistantly shows between two and three MPH slower than the speedo.  I figure the GPS is probably more accurate. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Hey Don.....   Find a cop and tell him all about your troubles, and then have him clip you with his radar...   and if the aren't the same, ask him to write you a short statement to that effect, (you know, so you can "send it in to Garmin" to get your unit fixed.)  Then hold on to that statement, becuase it is worth it's weight in gold the next time you go to court for a radar ticket!!!!!   [smiley=jalapeno.gif] [smiley=banana.gif] [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

Bottom line, from an ECM kinda guy...   THE GPS IS ACCURATE IF IT HAS A LOCK ON THREE OR MORE SAT's.  PERIOD.

Check the accuracy of the time the gps is keeping.  If the time is off so will the speed. Make sure it is in mph verses kph.
Finally, and if all else fails, Garmin has excellent customer service

I have three GPS's, a Garmin 3+, a Garmin 5 and a 2720, tonight I put all three on the dash of my truck and the speed was the same for all three, at 60mph I clicked off mile after mile in 60 seconds.
