XM Install
« on: September 09, 2005, 08:42:01 AM »

I think that I have seen someone else that has done this but thought I would share anyway. I installed my XM into the lower fairing last night. I will finish all the wiring tonight and should be ready to ride again for the weekend. I originally had the unit in my windshield pouch but decided I wanted to remove the pouch completely. Besides a handlebar mount, this is the only place I could find. The next step is to get the locking covers and put the unit in those so I have a little security.

Laker, nice install!  That is similar to 04hd103's setup.

How about a picture from the back side to show what kind of mounting was fabricated to keep the unit from just pushing inside?

Tonight I'll snap some pics of the inside and the wiring when complete.

The antenna sits on top of the radio under the fairing.

I don't think the unit itself is waterproof but considering the entire XM package is now only $50 I will take my chances. I do know that how I have it mounted is much more protected than the handlebar mounts that I was considering.

Mine's on the handlebars and after getting wet for some reason the presets don't work until it drys out. Still can use the manual tuner or the remote.

You can get a weather resistant cover for your handlebar mounted Roady here http://www.twowheelradio.com/ or here http://www.hoonhardware.com/RoadyHolder/roadyholder.htm

I don't have any pics of the antenna under the fairing but will try to remember to snap a few the next time I have it off. The antenna itself is a magnet and holds very firmly to the radio. As far as the reception, I never have a problem until I get into the mountains. Then I always have a CD for backup tunes.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Thanx Darrell, Just ordered my cover from 2wheel.

I also have my antenna "mouse" on my radio under the fairing and have not had any problems.

Finally got around to snapping a few shots of the mounting bracket I used for the XM. I pounded an old license plate until I had the shape I wanted then I zip tied the XM bracket to the plate. Nothing pretty on the backside but it got the job done.

We did the install of the XM Roady2 on Mrs. We's bike yesterday and shot a couple of pictures. The end result is to have the Roady2 in one of the pouches in the HD three pouch windshield bag. The first is using a round file to cut a bit of the fairing away to make room for the wires to run through - a tip from Otis.

The Delphi FM Direct Adaptor has a power socket that you can use to keep your cigarette lighter freed up. I wired it into the back of the lighter.
We didn't shoot the last shot, three bags - no muss, no fuss. We'll shoot one later but there isn't much to see.  [smiley=drink.gif]

If you are about to ask how the DD antenna worked don't. Remember the 56 day service she was in for? Well they put the antenna on top of the radio and it would have worked as well as mine... if they would have plugged it in. Only took 9 months for me to come up with a need to take the fairing off. I wonder what those crooks at Colonial charged us for that install?

Can you tell me the Delphi part numer for this direct connect to the cigarette lighter. I really need one

RSA, what he's describing isn't something that plugs in to the cigarette lighter socket; it is something that connects at the back of the socket (inside the fairing) and keeps the bike's lighter socket unused.

RSA, if you've got the Roady2 it comes with a DC adaptor.  If you're wanting to connect it to your bike I think you'll find everything else you'll need at that Crutchfield link supplied above.

Rsantucc,

That is the Delphi part # SA10112-11P1. I can't get the Crutchfield site to load so I can't get a price comparison but I picked mine up at Best Buy for $27.99, in stock all day long. I picked up an assorted pack of those electrical tie-ins from Home Depot for less than $2.50, no wire cutting or taping. Way too easy... we don't need no stinkin' Crutch... field!    [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]

Jamey, the Crutchfield price for the kit was $24.99.  Little stuff is just about always better off purhcased close to home.  But that link did have a picture he could have looked at had he ventured there.

I am curious as to why you have problems in the mountains? And have you tried reversing directions? Wondering if your "pikespass" is blocking the sat view at certain elevations.

 [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]

I am sure it has something to do with the antenna not having a direct signal to the satellite.

Currently my EZPAss is "double stick" taped to the underside of the outer fairing.

Porthole,

We have thought of getting an easy pass and I have never seen a good looking set up. The only reliable set up I have seen is on the inside of the windshield, and that is butt ugly.  [smiley=bucktooth.gif]
You seem to be saying that it works under your faring, is that right?   If it will work there [smiley=idea2.gif]  it would nearly stand to reason that it would work in one of the pouches in our three pouch windshield bag.

Has anyone had sucess with that?  [smiley=zstupid.gif]

Tonys,

Thanks! That piece looks like it is brass. When I was reading the install procedures, XM said the antenna had to be put on a metal surface and you might need to move it around to find the best location for reception. I am now wondering if this bracket provides a better (something) that in turn gives you better reception. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

As will many on this site, I'll try anything that will give me more!  [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]

XM review!

Wow!  How have I lived without this?  XM Top Tracks 46 - ROCKS!  Where disco still sucks!  I am so very impressed. And with going up and down and all around in the mountains yesterday, I only found a couple of times where I lost signal and that was for a fraction of a second.  If you don't have it, get it. I don't think I need to haul around CDs anymore.  Love it!
