Cylinder Head Temperature Gauge
« on: May 02, 2007, 09:49:55 AM »

I'm thinking of replacing the Air Temp Gauge with an aviation Cylinder Head Temp gauge. Since we're running air-cooled motors, the situations are very similar.

I'm thinking about something like this:

except that it would be CHT for both scales. too bad they don't make a spun aluminum with red backlighting gauge.

The gauge uses a thermocouple washer placed on the sparkplug and then the plug screws into the head (8WK).

The CHT probe needs to be in contact with the cylinder head, and I think there may be a problem because the spark plug does not sit on the surface of the head, but sits down in a shallow recess. Can anyone measure the width and depth of the shallow well that the sparkplug sits in?

Thanks

Chief if it is not a sealed guage then it is not too hard to open them up and replace the face plate with a different one. Just find another guage the same size that is broken and with the correct color you want and use it's face. Used to do it all the time before auto meter and other companies started making replacement faces.
