Title: 2015 Crystal Carbon/Phantom Flames tank repaint?
Post by: Lolo on September 21, 2018, 07:38:40 AM
Hello!

My tank has been dented by a carrier so it needs to be repaired. The whole tank need to be OEM changed or fully repainted by a local painter. Insurance wants to repaint because it is half the price of an OEM exchange. Of course painter says it is ok. Do you think it is possible to reproduce factory like the Crystal Carbon/Phantom Flames paint specs and pattern?

Thank you in advance for your inputs

Greetings   Lolo

It is possible depending on the experience and how good your painter is. However depending on the dent/damage and how it is repaired can/will it have any impact in the fuel capacity the tank will hold. If it were mine and it did impact the fuel capacity I would insist on an OEM replacement.

I agree with Dood.  If it’s not OEM you run a big risk on trading value too

Winter arriving it'll take a while to get the repaint done I'm guessing 4 or 5 months perfect timing for you!

OEM, as I had a small dent repainted on mine and it took my painter 13 coats to match factory paint job.

T(h)anks all for your inputs. I've asked my HD dealer if they warranty an OEM execution of the paint job proposed... still waiting for his answer but IMHO there is no way they can warranty that. I'll keep you posted.

Good luck.  HD will not sell you the paint and the flames are actually stickers under the clear coat.

I'm drawing a blank on the painter, but you can find a lot of his work on multiple threads on here.  His work on that paint looks pretty amazing.  Hes done a few of the carbon/phantom projects.  He would be your best bet if you dont just get a complete OEM replacement tank.

This just does not sound right. I retired from the insurance industry and body shop before that. We never in either job repaired a fuel tank, bike/car/boat whatever. Cars for the most part we paid for LKQ but bikes were always OEM. This sounds like a young mis-informed appraiser making a snap decision. Talk to his supervisor and then his supervisor. I can not imagine an appraiser taking the word of a painter that he can repair a custom job without proof (examples) because if it does not match then they have to make it right which at that time would mean new tank and loss of use to you do to there incorrect decision. Insurance companies do not like to pay twice. Also after getting the tank hot with a grinder for repairs how does he intend to treat the interior of the tank to prevent rust? Any metal you heat on one side will rust on the other side if not treated and you can not repair a dent (except for PDR) without grinding off the existing paint.
