Title: Hoist's New BLUE 3!!!
Post by: Hoist! on August 07, 2008, 01:47:56 PM
OK gang, everything begins today for my new BLUE 3! ::)

TODAY'S UPDATE:

Spoke to Keyboard and bike's being picked up at Jim's next week. ;)

Meantime, Joy's at Metal Dragon and getting properly setup before I get it. It's getting an S&S Super E carb, piped breather to the floor, Cycle Shack TD's w/heat shields, Dyna programmable single-fire ignition module, new single-fire coils, new Accel ign wires, new Dunlop K591 rear tire, repack F&R wheel bearings, chrome F master cylinder and clutch perch (already has chrome switch housings), bleed new brake fluid in F&R, and replace fork oil with new heavier fork oil. Jim's got his work cut out for himself to get this done before the trucker shows up. Parts are all available and are being shipped to Jim. He'll have everything tomorrow! Think I got the basics covered for now, and the bike will arrive rideable for to my standards! :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

Jim's gonna get a load of before pics up for us, as I will never see the bike in the "before" condition! I'm psyched! I should have this thing, all ready to jump on and ride, within the next 3 weeks!!! :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3:

Binx is one cool chick :coolblue: .

That's why I married her! She's the best!!! :-* :-* :-*

But I did make a deal with her. Bike gets setup with Stage 1 and good brakes, rubber, and full maintenance requirements. Then no further Patented Hoist Upgrades will be performed this year!!! The HD brakes, front end and shocks will remain for now! ;)

Thanks baby, you're the greatest!!! :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3:

Oh Chit Ernie that's cold, but well deserved!!!  :huepfenjump3: :bananarock:

Original sale was from Mitchell's HD in Modesto, sold for $19,104.00+ tax 8/20/1999 and 4 miles on the odometer. No extended warranty purchase. Has 9700 miles on it and the original tires. They took great care of it, and it shows.
Howie she'll be 9 years old on 8/20!!!!  :2vrolijk_21:  :2vrolijk_21: Hopefully you can celebrate that in NYC!

Unforunately, to give Jim enough time to complete the work, bike will not be picked up at Metal Dragon until the week of 8/18. So I will miss her birthday here, but maybe Jim can call me on the 20th and let me listen to her purr! ;D ;)

Me either Scott. But bike is almost a tradeoff. My Pro Street's worth the same. And that one, by Binx's edict, is up for sale now. Ya feel a new thread coming on? ::) ;D ;D ;D

Will ride mine to work that day and stop for a cold one on the way home to celebrate the occasion :drink: (yes, as a matter of fact, I am looking for any reason to stop for a cold one ;D !)!

My, 9 years is a long time to keep a scooter and grow accustomed to seeing it in the garage and then part with it! :o  I don't think I could do it! :nixweiss: :'(

The red one will be four about the same time.  It's told me I dare not think of getting rid of it either.  Anymore I listen to its warnings also; the girl has a bit of an attitude when she's unhappy.

Hoist....here is another "upgrade" for you.....you didn't know this but the brake pedal on our FXR2's and FXR3's is aluminum finished thus we need to always "polish" them.....there is HOWEVER a solution to this, so in my ever present graciousness of keeping you out on the road completely shiney......... I am bringing yet another opportunity to make your FXR3 a splendid display of CHROME BRAKING POWER!!!, [OF COURSE THERE ALWAYS IS, RIGHT? LOL] ....that's right the FXR4 features a "CHROMED" version of this "pedal"....so feel free to call your nearest 20% off HD discount dealer in order to take advantage of this timely display of concern for your well being....LOL....

UMMMM Now if we can only get one of the FXR4 gracious owners to provide the part number all would be Heavenly.

Funny you mention that. I'm not a chrome freak, or have OCD badly. I have OPD! (performance) But brake/clutch levers and brake pedal were always things I liked in chrome. Is the FXR4 BP available without a FXR4 VIN? There are chrome aftermarket FXR brake pedals out there. But if I can get one from HD, I'd probably order it. You got a P/N? Thanks. :2vrolijk_21:

I believe there should be no reason you would need a vin# for this particular item, however I do recognize what you are trying to infer.  If we were talking "fender" or gas tank or etc....you are right it becomes more difficult.  But if a vin# is required....perhaps someone here will feel comfortable stepping forward.

Hey, Tim!?!  I gotta disagree with ya on that one, at least on the 3!  The parts manual for my 3 shows a 40945-99 pedal, too, and the one on my bike is super-shiny . . . . .. CHROME!

Howie, hope you haven't dropped the $$$s with Jenni yet . . .  :o

103tHunDer~~Hey, Tim!?!  I gotta disagree with ya on that one, at least on the 3!  The parts manual for my 3 shows a 40945-99 pedal, too, and the one on my bike is super-shiny . . . . .. CHROME!  Howie, hope you haven't dropped the $$$s with Jenni yet . . .

Arggggghhhh.....dang it, details details details....lol....when looking at the literature/spec sheets for the FXR2 and FXR3 provided by HD they do not specifically state that the FXR2 or FXR3 has a "chrome" brake pedal ie: note the reference list for the "accessories" I mentioned under the "History of the FXR" thread.  However the FXR4 DOES state that it has a CRHOME brake lever as an accessory added to it's standard features.  Also, I recall having a conversation with my buddy about his "brake" pedal not too long ago on his FXR3 after noticing that the FXR4 "specifically" states that it has a "chrome" brake pedal. Of course a casual conversation did not devulge that he knew otherwise....I dislike giving out bad information....but that's what is great so thanks Brian, we can get to the "RIGHT" information....

But Hoist, before you disgard the notion of getting one just yet, your not working with a "stock" rear brake lever on your FXR3 at the present time, thus I am unaware of whether that "forward" brake lever is chrome or not,....HOWEVER it most likely is in the box of "OEM" parts........

Brian thanks for bringing to light my incorrect statement above!!!!!.....I will go back and update the accessories list @ the "History Of The FXR" thread to make sure it reflects this new information.

When Blaine provided the part number above as HD# 40945-99 I was a bit concerned.....because "99" means it had to be prior to the FXR4 since it is a "00" bike as it's a 2000 and I knew it wasn't on my FXR2.....DANG IT!!!! LOL...

Alrighty....enough said.....  :2vrolijk_21:

Regards,

Tim

Tim

Tim...I'm curious...What is the PN for the lever in your fxr2 manual and can someone look and find the PN for the brake pedal lever in their fxr3 manual? The PN I gave ya'll for the fxr4 is the CORRECT PN as referenced by the manual..

The Part number for the rear brake pedal on my FXR2 is on Page 53 Of the FXR2 Part's Manual:

Item#25 HD# 42523-87   BRAKE PEDAL ASM  [Which includes:  Cotter Pin HD# 515; ROD END HD# 42437-87; Clevis Pin HD# 42460-80B; Bushing HD# 42524-82A]

So is the FXR3 & FXR4 brake lever HD#40945-99 listed also as a BRAKE PEDAL ASSEMBLY as well?  AND if so are the part numbers above the same one's listed as part of the ASSEMBLY?

Tim

Thanks for trying to clear this up gang! :2vrolijk_21:

I'm watching an FXR 3 Parts Manual on EBay. They also have a PM and SM there from Lake Shore HD. When I plugged the P/N into Zanotti Lookup, it was cheaper just to order it. Maybe I can land the PM on auction and order the SM from Jenni. But I'm not ordering anything for the bike til I get, besides the work Jim's doing for me. ;)

Tim, Yes and yes.  The 40945-99 is a brake pedal assy. and has the same parts making it up.  Odd that the 2's did not come with the chrome pedal. :nixweiss:

Brian.....

Thanks for clearing up the "assembly" part for me.....so now my question is how in the heck can one just order the "Brake Pedal Lever" ONLY without the other "assembly" parts.....geez this thing is $145.00 with shipping lol....and I don't care what Mike says.....lol I am tired of getting out my aluminum polish and trying to make that darn thing look good....it's always looking dull....so this is on my short list....it's an appointment that only I WILL appreciate....lol...

So anyone have any ideas how to ONLY acquire the PEDAL ONLY?????  I may have to bother Jenni with this brief topic....

But I thought I would ask any of you guys first....not that any of you FXR3 or FXR4 owners would have reason to know....since you are already running the chrome with no need for more....lol

Another thing that has bothered me is that my FXR2 also does not sport the "chrome triple tree" don't worry Hoist, I won't lead you wrong on this one.....YOU GOT IT BUDDY....just us FXR2 owners are cleaning our rags on this one too.....lol....and while I am at it....as it turns out they failed to give us FXR2 owners the chrome risers that you all have on the FXR3's but that's ok my buddy who owns an FXR3 had some extra ones that were chromed and gave them to me way back when I owned my 2003 Dyna Low Rider....those were aluminum as well and using the same risiers of course....so I put them on the FXDL then after I purchased the FXR2 and realized I didn't have the chrome risers before selling the 2003 FXDL Dyna Low Rider chrome ones came off and the original FXR2 risers went on the FXDL and the FLIP was done....lol....so....now the triple tree but my buddy has threatened me if I change them....lol....

Regards,

Tim

I might add another item to those of you who are modifying these fxr3 blue babes. When i bought my fxr3 blue it had a 150 tire on  the rear..and i replaced it several months ago w/ the same. you can put 150 tire on rear of fxr3, i'm currently riding on one, one change that was made was reversing strut bolt..so nut is outside..with head inside of rear fender. It looks good and rides great!  i really like a little more rubber on the road anyway...look what is going on with current bikes.

A Photo of the above would be worth a 1000 words....lol and be quite helpful!!!
Ummmmm would this work for the FXR2 too huh huh huh would it.....well would it.....lol.....
Don't tell me you guys are leaving us FXR2 boys and girls out in the rain......come on now.....lol.....
 :jalapeno:
Talk to me Dave.....inquiring minds need to know this.....can a 150 fit on my FXR2?????
:nixweiss:  ::)
So you have no rubber fighting with the walls of the fender....everything runs smoothly....no rubbing whatsoever????
I had a 150 on my 2003 Dyna Low Rider and of course I liked the looks of it....

Ok so tell me does having a 150 rear tire affect handling in a negative way on these bikes....just curious....perhaps a silly question but enlighten me on this please....

Regards,

Tim

Wasn't even sure a 140 fit. I've used 1 size over on wheels for years, but never went 2 sizes over. Normally you'd use a wider wheel too. You're using a 150 on a stock wheel? Yeap, tell us more please! :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks Bob. I converted my '85 FXWG to a chain too, but with the Bobtail fender, I still can't get a wider tire back there. And the bolts ARE reversed on the WG struts. ;)

Did you use a stock wheel with that 150 on the FXR? :confused5:

It was an interesting project, at the time we were running a 5" stroke 116" shovel drag bike at the shop with 13/1 compression etc etc and since I ran the 96" shovel for such a long time, we wanted to see what kind of power we could get out of one of these new EVO engines without stroking it.  This was the first Evo to arrive in the city might as well tear it down and see what it looked like. Gerry Branch had just published an article about how he got over 100 hp out of a 80" EVO so we thought at the dealership to try and duplicate the result. Had about 1000 miles on the motor pulled the heads and went at them with a welder to re create Gerry's bathtub combustion chamber. The only over size valves we could find were out of a Chrysler Hemi had to cut about 1/4" off the tip and re machine the keeper groove then milled  down the heads .050" Ran a S&S solid cam and S&S B carb on it. with stock pistons and sporster ignition (no rev limiter). Took a bar and punched the baffles out of the pipes some minor tuning on it and it would out do all of the Shovel strokers at the time I went up against. As long as the clutch would hold you could pull wheelies all day.

HeHe, you sound like my buddy Vern. He's played around the same way. He wrenched our crew's Ironhead drag bikes during the ECRA days. He rode his 93" shovel for years after everyone started getting Evos. Not much could beat his shovel. 12.5:1 and ran on pump gas, but with the Super D, it was like flushing a toilet bowl. He couldn't go very far on a tankful, but he always got there first! You could stand on that kicker and it didn't budge. Tough motor to kick over. And watch your knee/ankle on the kick back! He had a '95 Dyna Super Glide, his first Evo, but had been playing with them from day one when they came out in '84. He's got Evo porting down to a science. He built my '89" with an S&S 5/8 leg and a Vern ported top end with S&S stroker pistons. He liked Sifton cams, no longer available. That 89" Pro Street runs like a mutha, but it's only 425 lbs dry. I think you'd get along great with Vern! :2vrolijk_21:

Actually the shovel worked really well in the dirt I used to bring an extra wheel with knobby tire on it for the tire pulls at runs. 65 mph in first with a guy riding behind on the tire wahoo. Never had it in sand though except a few times while barrel racing with it. The only problem if the dirt was a bit wet it would jam up in the open belt and break it but I carried a few spares.

I just photographed bike races this past weekend at BARBERS MOTORSPORTS TRACK in B'ham, al. ASRA regional event. Some HD products kicked ass, Buells ran good, fun day of races..shot over 2,000 images ..tired puppy...first day of the event rode over my fxr3 w/ my camera gear in T bag. I may post few shots of  this racing event..on back straight away they were hitting 150 mph...if folks are interested.

You know how we've often debated the "stock" versus "modified" issue here before?  I have a feeling we're about to see a FXR3 transformed beyond our imaginations.

And I go around thinking I've set my 2 up like the CVO should have back then.  I think Howie's buiding the Richard Childress edition.

Brian, seeping base gaskets. Don't want to exacerbate the situation by using synthetic. So until I'm ready to rip the top end off, the dino will be staying in the motor. With any luck, Jim will have some pics today!!! :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3:

No sense belaboring this point....lol but how many times have I wished I had two copies of the service manual and parts manual at my finger tips.....one for the garage to work and the other to have where my computer is so as to be able to look up things without having to chase for the other.  One dirty vs One clean...the only draw back of course to this is when one makes notes so that's a bit of a issue, ie: having to make them twice....Oh YEAH, did I mention I do write in my service manuals...lol

Here is another thing.....believe it or not, I have a 2003 FXDL or Dyna Service manual and have actually found some parts of the manual quite helpful crossing over to the FXR2.  The FXR2/3 [& 4 for that matter] Service Manual "feels" like it was just "thrown" together in some ways.....I seriously believe they had better tech writers in 2002 and 2003.

I also find myself drawing from my 2002 Road King/Touring Service Manual for some discussions as well...ie: the primary....heck the FXR2/3 Service Manual barely says anything about it....where as the 2002 RKC I own has the very same primary set up....minus of course the more dated "primary chain tensioner" set up given that of course the inner primary of the FXR2/3 is tying into a slightly different transmission than the 2002 touring bikes....  I must also make this distinction the reason of course that a 1999, 2000, 2001 touring Service manual wouldn't be so accurate is that during those years they were running a 24/37 primary gearing vs in 2002 they went back to the 25/36 gearing that of course is exactly in our FXR's.  I might also mention that the actual friction plate part numbers are different...and to tell you the truth unless it has something to do with thickness of those 8 friction plates I am not sure why they would be different.....in fact I believe I have enough other "evidence" to support that there are no differences but that gets into even more detail than is warranted here.....lol so (onward)

I don't want to lead anyone down a path that says I review the Dyna or the Touring Service Manuals that much but there are cases where you scratch your head....because you can tell they left out some detail.....After selling my 2003 FXDL Dyna Low Rider I kept the service manual and parts manual and of course obviously still owning the 2002 RKC I have those two books as well....I simply find myself going back to both of those books sometimes as reference material in helping to clarifiy procedures for the FXR2.

So before anyone jumps out and purchases these manuals and perhaps gets disappointed that they aren't what you thought I was describing, I would recommend that you review the service manual of the FXR2/FXR3 [and actually the FXR4 uses the same Service manual except for a suppliment for the brakes, electronics] as I know most of you have much better skills working on your bikes than me...remember my shade tree mechainc skills leaves me with a tree looking like "Charlie Brown's Christmas tree on a bad day.....so you might not benefit as much as I do by the "cross referencing", but all I can tell you is that you will find the FXR2/3 Service Manual to be more criptic than for other bikes.....it's as if they through it together as an after thought as compared to a "regular" model production bike.....which of course since it was brought into production for this CVO process they probably had less time for proofing and reviewing what was going out...

Regards,

Tim

It left my house Wednesday and I said goodbye to a big part of my life; but am very happy that HD4SALE was available for myself and for Howie across the country!

HeHe! thanks Mike, I saw that after she wrote it. That was her feedback for the site she advertised the bike on. And it turned out to be a classic CVOHarley story in the end. Joy (the PO, not Joy the bike ;D) would've liked this place and fit right in. I couldn't tell her that cause she might not have sold the bike then!!! ::) :D ;)

Thanks for the pics Jim! Nice to see they're professional and caring about their business. Makes me feel a little less uneasy. And with any luck, within the next 2 weeks, Joy will have a new home, with a few other beautiful sisters to room with, and a great big CVO family to go visit!!! I know Joy will be as happy to be here as I am!!! :2vrolijk_21: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3:

Not up to that yet Don, but 4PM, no way. He just called. He's in Manhattan in the 50's at 3:30! He's gotta get down to 36th and thru the Tunnel, then head east on the LIE (the world's largest parking lot)! Prolly closer to 5! :nixweiss: :nixweiss: :nixweiss:

Oh well, he'll get here as fast as our traffic permits at this point! ;)

I actually surprise myself sometimes, as to how calm I can be when I don't expect myself to be. He talked to his last stop in Brooklyn (supposed to be after me), that closes at 6. They're being pr!cks about it and demand he get there so they don't have to wait for him. Believe it or not, I just told him to do what he has to and get here when he can. He REALLY appreciated it as he won't get stuck staying in NYC overnight now. Hey, it is what it is! Joy and I will now be waiting patiently to be united! Hey, they say that good things come to those who wait!!! ;)

The Pats logo may look better, and I've never relly signed on as a fan of either, but I have to come down on the Giants side.  Eli's a much more regular guy than Brady and I wanted Michael Strahan to win a Super Bowl for years, so he can retire on top and do Sundays on TV from the booth.

Now that I've riled up the New England folks......

I'm copying this from the Pictures Thread, where I put Joy's arrival pics up for everyone. But I'd like to continue the progress, upgrades, and youze FXR guy's input here. So I'm copying and pasting the approriate stuff from that thread, and we'll pickup Joy's progress from here! ;)

And in the 45 min I had her out today, I LOVE THIS BIKE ALREADY!!! She rides like a dream! I think I'll air her out in the Catskills this weekend! I already know she needs some engine help. But they all do. Stock doesn't really cut it for me. And I mean more than Pipes, Carb, Ignition, which I've already done. But that's no biggie. Vern can work his magic with her heads, get some compression in there and just the right cam. But I'm in no hurry right now for that. I'd just like to ride her, get used to her, and enjoy her!!! :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3:

9/2/08
It was a bike I've always admired, and already knew it was a Hoist kinda bike. And it somewhat rides like it already. I was impresssed by the suspension actually, although the bikes setup too low for the twisties! But the suspension's surprisingly responsive! It's the Hot Rod look and feel that I go for in all my bikes! I'm fairly happy with the seating position, bars, and forward controls. But that's after only 45 minutes this evening. We'll see how I feel on a trip to the Catskills this weekend hopefully! :2vrolijk_21:

9/3/08
Don't worry Tim, that's the compression I'd be running. How'd ya guess? Not doing anything radical to this bike. That little bit of top end work will wake this baby up and get me about 1HP/cu in, not bad for an HD street bike. On this lite bike, it'll get 1/4 times in the 12's! Vern's done tons of these Evo hot rod top ends, and have it on my '85 FXWG (which is going onto the rigid Hoist Bobber next), and it's performance is prdedictable!

I was hoping you'd find my mini review embedded in this thread! I knew ya would! Yes, it's a remarkably decent setup. Most times I can sit on a bike and know what I need to do. Might get it wrong, like Cybil, but 1 more time will get it right! With this bike, I'm really not so sure I will change anything relative to seating position. The Bars are setup kinda like my Pro Street, with '87 FXLR bars. It gives ya a drag bar feel and position. I might want that on this bike. So until I take some longer rides on her, I'll be reserving any decision of changing the current setup. I might save ya a trip to the cardiologist. This bike might never see apes! ;D

Thanks for your help through the process, and I'm sure, in the future! Your commitment and passion for these FXR's is not wasted on me, that's for sure! I love it! The information you dig up for us is awesome! And the humor you try to add to it makes reading your posts lotsa fun, like that baby photo! I appreciate all you do here!!! Don't worry, I won't ruin this 1 of 64 beautiful CVO BLUE3 named Joy!!! ;) :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3:

Had her out for a few hours today. Lots of highway and curves. And I gotta say, Tim is pretty spot on with his assessment! The bars are too narrow! But they're also too short. Great for drag racing and bar hopping, but not for rocking and rolling at speed! Now the challenge is those stupid indicator lights in the risers! The bike needs straight risers and taller bars. Actually might need to look at my original combo I thought I wouldn't need on this bike. Now how to get a set of straight 4" risers and maintain the indicator lights in the riser handlebar clamp! But 4" straight risers with 8" tall Flanders #1 bars might be just the ticket. OK, I've got my work cut out for myself on this one!

But the bike as is, tracks like it's on rails! I'm still surprised at how responsive this stock suspension is. But not enough travel. Bike is very stiff over bumps, but that doesn't necessarily mean I've got bitubos back there either. I think I'll be persuing the taller AK-20 and bitubo combo, and raising the suspension at least 1"!

Had the bike over 100 for the first time today. Surprisingly stable and felt good. Not sure I agree with Tim on the gearing. It's geared for highway. But in the stock engine configuration, it can't get out of it's own way below 3 grand! But above 3 grand, this cam ain't too bad. You feel it kick in over 3 grand and it pulls decent to redline! The motor's still tight at higher RPM's, which tells me the PO never pushed this bike at all. It'll be up to me to start stretching it out, which is perfectly fine with me! Cruising at 80 is 3500 RPM, and not 4 grand like earlier Evo 5-speeds. Might be good for gas mileage, which ya'll know how much I care about that! Don't think I'll mess with the gearing though until after the engine mods are done and see how she responds to a more powerful engine first! Cybil's my trip bike, so gearing for the road isn't my priority. Getting her to be quicker is my goal, not necessarily faster!

But the bike is solid! It rides like a new bike. And like all the Evo's, it makes the TC, as some of us have maintained, sound like a pile of junk. Nothing but a smooth sounding engine with these Evo's! Them TC's are junk compared to the Evo! But such is the way of the world. We've made so much progress over the last 100 years, I guess it's time for corporate manufacturing to reverse that trend in the name of profit! I think HD certainly went backwards with the TC replacement of the Evo! Now I have 4 Evo's and 1 TC. Can't see myself ever getting another TC since Cybil will hopefully be with me forever! But the Evos don't give you a damn thing to complain about, Smooth and reliable, just a little small though. And I won't build it radical, so I'll get it up to about 80-85 HP, keep CR under 10:1, and she'll hold together as well as a stocker, without having to whack it all the time like I do now!

All in all, this bike is everything I expected it to be and then some. I'm extremely happy with the way she rides, and not many bikes look better in stock form. Another HD created just for Hoist, and now it's up to me to take it from there, and make a bike HD wished they could build!!! More updates to follow for sure!!! ;)

9/4/08
I think I want to put the mid controls and highway pegs back on, before determining what bars to use. Right now it's like a CA Long Bike feel, but this isn't the bike for that seating position. Taller bars w/the forward controls would work, but again, no sure if this is the bike for that. My FXWG is setup that way. But that bike has more rake, and also has more of that "chopper" look to it. This is more of a sportier style bike compared to the WG! ;)
So......................................................................................Tell me Tim, what CHROME bars are you recommending here for 60 bucks, to use with the stock risers? FXR4 bars? Or just a recommendations on some bars. Would like a little taller and wider. What do ya got? ???

About 2 grand! :o
And worth every penny! :2vrolijk_21:
But not sure when. :(

Stock CA cam in it! And your cam makes all the difference in the world! But ride Cybil, my FXWG, or my Pro Street! You'll know where I'm coming from! S&S 570 on a 95 is nice. The 585 is nicer. The 110 with 595's is even more nicer! Never enough HP Tim! ;)
And then I can get a better feel for the gearing to see if I need to change that. Maybe, maybe not! ::)

My 110" TC is 9.8:1. My 89" Evo is 9.3:1. My 80" Evo is 10:1. All run well, and are reliable engines Some for many years, and some still being tested. But Vern built motors like this have a great history of performance and longevity. I'll see what he has up his sleeve this time. Might not even be this winter. My FXWG needs to get finished first. Then the Hoist Bobber needs to get finished. Then I can think about motor work on this bike........................prolly! :D

Or maybe a 5/8" crank with S&S stroker pistons, using worked stock HD heads and stock cylinders? 89" wicker, with a bone stock look! Great motor! Same as the Pro Street! :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3:

I'm getting a really good feel for this bike already. It's the best FXR I've ever ridden. It's the best FXR ever made! Fitting that Cybil (SERK3) is the best RK ever made! Hmmm, an FXR3 and a SERK3! Ya see a pattern developing here? :smilie_staub: :smilie_staub: :smilie_staub:

That should bring this up to date in the FXR Board. If anyone's interested in following future progress, I'll be continuing here! :2vrolijk_21

Did about 150 miles of hell riding today! Great riding. Brian did great with the Garbage Barge in our traffic! Got back to Vern's and guess what! HeHe!!! OIL Leak!!! :o Was primary fluid. I blew oil past the o-ring for the mid-control blank off! Between that and today's hell ride, them forward-controls are coming off, and the mids are going back on!!! Well, threw a box of parts in Cybil's TP today and took it to Vern's. The box was all the original parts for the stock mid controls. They'll go on after I get back from MV. Then I'll see how the bars work out. The seat is very comfortable too. :2vrolijk_21:

Joy has HD Flame Footpegs now. They're not too bad. How do you guys like the stock wide band knurled pegs? I'm thinking of using the HD Anti-vibration Style Footpegs in the rider position. Those are the plain jane black cushy rubber pegs that come stock on most FXR/D bikes. Those are the most comfy pegs around! Wondering what to use for the passenger and highway pegs now! :nixweiss:

I like the stock billet pegs OK.  They look great but aren't the most comfortable.  They also show wear on the chome between the rubber bands where your foot rides.  hdfxr3 uses the plain jane ones on his.  Comfort-wise, I'm sure they're better than the stock pegs, just not sure I could get used to the looks after having the chrome ones. :nixweiss:

comfort...means more to me than looks, always can put stock ones on for bike show..or to sell..but cushy ones feel good going down the road. i bought the rubber ones with chrome caps on the end for my paassenger and road pegs..thye kinda match...and shifter peg too! the newer pegs are thicker and maybe little wider..when my stock ones give out..i'll replace w/ newer fatter ones. meanwhile ..i'm riding her ..with smiles and miles!

Thanks Brian and Dave. I'm going with the Rubber Anti-Vibration Pegs for the rider. I think Binx likes the rbeer pegs too, but she wants to see the stock ones first. She hasn't yet cause the flame pegs are on there now. So the flame pegs come off w/the forward controls. Can't wait to get this done to feel the new seating postion. Hopefully it won't change how the bars feel now cause I'm sorta liking the drag bar feel of these stock narrow bars. :2vrolijk_21:

Soon it'll be time to do a minor transformation to Joy! ordered a buncha parts for her. Now that I've used her a bit, I think I know what to do, for now anyway. Nothing major. First the stock mid controls go back on. I decided to keep the HD Flame foot pegs on. I ordered a 3rd set so all 3 match. But might decide to use the standard HD anti-vibration rider pegs. I'll have both now. Got the HD chrome footpeg hardware too. Ordered the HD Flame shifter peg and HD Flame hand grips w/Flame end caps too. And a HD chrome timer plug just for S&G's! ;D

I ordered the HD Low Upright Medallion Style, HD Top Stitch Low Backrest Pad, HD Leather B&S Sissy Bar Bag, and HD Sport 4-Bar Luggage Rack. That should help Binx a little back there, and give us a little storage space for now.

For handlebars, I decided to try to leave the risers and the PIA indicator setup alone for now. I'm gonna try the HD 56085-83T Chrome Handlebars out. Stock are 28" tip to tip, 8" base width, 3.5" rise, and 6.25" pullback. I thought I'd try to keep the sportier riding position with the mid controls back on. The bars I'm trying are 31" tip to tip, 7.75" base width, 4.5" rise, and 5.75" pullback. I'm hoping they raise my hands the little more I need, and give it even a sportier feel with the right positioning. For 40 bucks it's worth a shot.

The bike runs great with the carb/pipes/ignition change from the beginning. Never rode her stock, but didn't have any desire to either. This is how a stock Evo should run. Thinking of a lil headwork, compression and cams to get her up to about 80HP. This light lil bike should run really great that way!

The suspension's been fine so far. I think I'll hold off on anything there. But I'll prolly be ordering the direct bolton 6-piston PM differential bore chrome front, and 4-piston DB PM chrome rear calipers soon too.

After I get the parts and get to it, I'll get some more pics up. She's my only bike on the road right now and I'm lovin riding her! She'll only get better from here on! ;)

She'll only get better from here on! ;)

Now let's try it again before this resembles the Hijack This Thread thread! :o

See above quote!!! ::) ;D ;)

The HD Low Upright Medallion Style (w/B&S Medallion on back) and HD Top Stitch Low Backrest Pad look great on the bike. That'll definitely help Binx a lot back there. The Chrome Timer Hole Plug is always a nice touch on an Evo too! :2vrolijk_21:

The HD Sport 4-Bar Luggage Rack hasn't arrived yet. Waiting on that, and the HD quick remove trans dipstick and the HD oil temp dipstick too. ???

The HD Leather B&S Sissy Bar Bag is a waste and is going back. Don't waste your money on it!

Got the HD Flame stuff, but waiting on the handlebars. Will do the bars and mid-controls together when the bars come in. ;)

That's it for TODAY'S UPDATE on Joy! ;D

HeHe!!! Actually, not this time! Trying out HD 56085-83T, Chrome Super Glide Handlebars. 1" taller rise and 3" wider than stock FXR3 bars. Forty bucks! it's worth a try before I have to start messing with riser changes! That's a hornet's nest cause of the integrated PIA indicator lamps built into the riser clamp! ;)

The FXR frame has you IN the bike Wayne. And this has a low seat as well. With the stock pullback risers and bars, it's almost the right height right now. Another inch higher and 3" wider with 3/4" less pullback should about do it. It should get the bars and my hand/arm position where I want em, without the torture of redoing too many other things! I hope anyway!!! ;)

It'll retain the FXR3 look too! :2vrolijk_21:

TODAY'S UPDATE:

Went to the shop yesterday to see if we can find the right bars for Joy. Well, Tim's not gonna like this, but we did. I tried those Super Glide bars I picked up w/6" risers. NG. Fugly and not comfortable. As soon as I saw that look, I knew some kinda Apes would be required instead. I tried 8" & 10" baby apes w/6" risers. Not quite right. Then I tried the 12.5" w/3.5" straight round risers! Perfect!!! We have a winner. So I'm going with the:

Flanders G3: The Original Tall Apehanger Bars®
Height: 12.5"
Pullback: 10"
Center: 8.5"
Width: 34.5"
Diameter: 1"

Sit on a level bike, close your eyes and reach your arms out where you wanna be. Bingo!!! Right on the grips of the Flanders! Just where they belong. I was fortunate enough to be able to do this myself, with access to my friend's parts department, and try so many different setups. The G3's w/3.5" risers was perfect! Using urethane riser bushings and chrome hardware too.

So, that's the final piece of the setup puzzle. The mid controls are back on and that's a much better setup than the FC they had on her when I got her. Now I'm getting the handlebars to match my perfect arm/seating position. Joy should now be a joy to ride!!! With a killer look too!!! :2vrolijk_21: ;)

Can't wait to see the bike and bars together Howie.  The mental image that comes up looks great.  If the arms and shoulders are happy that's most important thing of course.  But I'll bet she looks great too.

All new cables or will some of it reach?

Not sure on that one yet Don. We needed to order the bars and risers. I'm sure the clutch cable's gotta go. Not sure how much extra control wiring is hanging out in the headlamp housing, throttle cables and brakeline might be OK. We shall see! But whatever it needs, it needs! ;)

This has been about a brazillion years ago.  But one of the old FXR bikes that I abused and trashed used to have got 10" apes and there was plenty of wire.  At least at the moment just can't recall on the cables though.

Howie
The best bars I ever found for FXR's were flat track bars from Flanders. You set them up with a 9" riser with a 45 degree bend and they are freakin perfect. Especially the way you ride.

OK, you'll have to wait til next weekend to see the "new and improved" Joy! The 12.5" Flanders Apes with 3-1/2" risers are perfect for me! I mounted them myself at the shop today cause they were pretty busy. We'll need new braided SS cables and brakeline, which can be measured and ordered now. We will need to extend the wiring too, but shouldn't be too bad since we're not internally wiring the bars. I also have the HD Flame grips, which will match the 3 sets of HD Flame Pegs (mid controls, highway. and passenger) and Shifter Peg. Also changing those ugly stock exhaust brackets to chrome ones. Bike should be done for next weekend! :2vrolijk_21:

No motor work this winter for her. Next winter I think. Only around 10K miles on her, and see no need to go into the motor at all. She doesn't leak a drop, so that'll give me something to do to her next winter. I think I will however replace the front and rear brake calipers. I'll use a PM Chrome 6-piston differential bore (same as on Cybil and the '85 FXWG; 4-piston polished PM on the Pro Street) on the front. I'll use the PM chrome 4-piston caliper for the rear! After that, she'll be completely setup properly for me. Won't need anymore cosmetic or ergonomic changes. Just the engine performance mods! :o :D

Tim, you gotta get used to a CVO FXR3 w/apehangers. I tried, but just couldn't stay away. All my bikes are setup 14"-16" total rise (risers + bars), except the Pro Street. Just couldn't bring myself to change that. Not too high, but just right! I guess I'm an apehanger kinda guy. What can I say! :huepfenjump3:

So with that, hopefully I'll be picking up Joy AND the '85 completely redone CVO Style FXWG (some pics in the EVO Section added tonight) next weekend. That leaves Cybil and the new Hoist Bobber (a rigid made from all the replaced parts from my '85 WG) to be done by the Spring. It looks like the pigs might actually start flying in a few months!!! ::) :D ;)

Just a little bit won't hurt the look any.  And if it dials the shoulders and wrists in better it's all good  .

Zactly! If not perfect, I might have to go to 2" risers instead of the 3-1/2s on there now. They're 16" high now overall. Might like em better at the 14-1/2" high instead. I'm hoping not. I like the look this way. But even setting em up first in the shop wasn't exactly the way you feel or sit when riding. Gotta do a lil more tweaking. We'll see how she ends up! ;)

Hoist, I'm anal as heck so don't take this the wrong way. The bike looks outstanding! Love all the mods. If the flame pegs have flames and rubber on both sides I would suggest you rotate the shift side highway peg and the brake side back foot peg. The shorter flame tip should be towards the back of the bike. If there aren't flames and rubber on both sides, if you switch those two pegs, you would get the same result. I know this because I did the same thing with my flamin' pegs and some other anal dude pointed it out to me.

Once again, I lust after the bike, it looks awesome!

I think if you take the shift side highway peg and switch it with the brake side center peg it will work out. Bike will go faster too! Not as fast as a red bike, but faster.

Thanks spyd! I'll think about it. I kinda like the contrast with the black wire harness outside. Easy swapout though! ;)

Joy is lookin good, well except for that 170 lbs of ugly  :zroflmao: did  she have internal wiring before the bar swap?

HeHe!!! Hey, I brought up the 170 lbs of ugly! So don't I know it! ;D

The wires were external stock Neal. I wanted to stay with the 1" bars. Flanders makes em pre-drilled for internal, but I kinda used to my street bikes this way. I always used tie wraps instead of those clips HD uses for the harness. ;)

I think if you take the shift side highway peg and switch it with the brake side center peg it will work out. Bike will go faster too! Not as fast as a red bike, but faster.

Don't get carried away with this peg thing bierle! The bike has mid-controls. It's a chrome 1-piece brake lever, not like a forward control setup! No separate brake piece. And I fart in your general direction regarding the color! (http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=12417.0;attach=26919;image) ;D ;D ;D

Blue isn't fastest either. Black bikes are still the fastest!!! :P :D :D :D

Well mbierle, you were right. I just swapped the L rider peg w/the R Highway peg, and they are all oriented correctly now. They must match the shifter peg, as that's the only one that is in a fixed location, and it determines the orientation of all of the foot pegs. They seem to be made in mirror images, so you can get the same orientation L & R! Good catch mb! :2vrolijk_21:

Now Guys.....you all are my witnesses.....I SAID NOTHING UNTIL ASKED!!!!!!

I knew when I saw you either kissing the board or hitting your head on the board.......that life for "JOY" would be different.....it was at this point, I knew that "JOY" was just going to be different.....(said twice for emphasis)    :2vrolijk_21:  LAUGHING QUITE HARD.....

 :bananarock:

Let's just say that I love the 10" Wild One Mini Apes On My Road King Classic of which you were a TREMENDOUS help to me with those....THANK YOU!!! providing excellent photos but let's just say THEY WILL NEVER BE APES ON my FXR2.......

But I have to remind myself....that you are riding in NYC and surrounding areas while I get to ride in these lovely canyons in Colorado....putting my FXR2 into nice curves and enjoy the slightly bent forward feel of the flanders bars I have which are a bit wider than "OEM" (doing my best to convince others the "errors" of your ways...lol) giving even more handling performance in those lovely mountain curves.....but I realize when you are screamin at one of them there TAXI'S that are cuttin you off in NYC or surrounding areas that having your hand in the UPPER position on the "JOY" gives you more CHANCE FOR IMMEDIATE REACTION.....lol

Howie, Howie, Howie......I just "KNEW" "JOY'S" days were numbered......

Tim

Yes....Howie.....you said it all..... "seating position" we have all gone out in our underware late at nite with a cold brew and sat on our bikes for hours....admiring them.....but we were "sitting" on them.....

                                                                                                   but

We are talking about "RIDING" Positions.....there is a huge difference.....the FLANDER's Bars answers that question even more directly than the "OEM" narrow bars for handling and performance......but remember I am talking about riding into curves.....not straight lines or underware admiration.......speaking of "underware" don't make me pull up that other "photo" Howie.....LOL......in fact it seems to me there is another photo of you in underware besides the one I posted....LOL...see what happens perhaps there is a theme here....LOL....Don't MAKE ME DO IT.....by the way does "two" make a "Fetish"? lol

HeHe!!! Never get enough pics, right? ::) ;D ;)

I pulled the bars back 1-1/2" and wanted to see how it looked. I normally try to keep the bars parallel to the forks. But in this case, it was a bit too far and tall. Pulling them back a bit seemed to "bring them to me" for "just the right" feel. I'll see how I like it before considering changing risers now. It feels pretty damn good right now in the driveway! Gotta get some time on it now setup like this. But I think I found my "right" setup! ;)

I've always had a 'hang-up' in regards to keeping 'em that way also, Hoist.  Any way some different risers would allow you to keep 'em parallel and still not be too far out?   :nixweiss:  spyder

I think the shorter risers would result in some extra "reach" for me spyd, as the bars would be further away with the shorter risers. I'm gonna hope this way works out. It feels "right" just as it is now. They're not pulled back "too far" to destroy the look I like. Of course youze'll know if that changes though! ;)

There's 63 other ones still out there. I'd say at least with at least 20 of em, there's no chance of obtaining one. Still leaves ya 44 of em out there for you to find one! It's a great bike man! ;)

But I think I found my "right" setup! ;)

Oops, almost forgot, what do ya think Tim? :D ??? :2vrolijk_21:

Yep, I was touring on that trip. That was in Aug. this year.  I rode from SC up into MI and rode with a buddy 360 degrees around Lake MI .... and across the U.P.

HeHe!!! But it's power:weight, right Tim! The rest of the garbage barge is what weighs em down. Put that 110 on an FXR and hold on tight!!! My 89" Pro Street blows away my SERK, and of course my other Evos. But it weighs only 515 lbs. Can't wait to see what the 110 Evo in my FXWG will do against the Pro Street! Should be fun! :huepfenjump3:

After all these years, I do however prefer touring on a RK than on a street bike now. 2-up, long days, lotsa chit, gets a lil fatiguing to me these days. I can ride all day on my SERK, get to our stop, and ride to dinner. Everything I need with me. And with the 110 and good suspension, it's a pretty decent hot rod too! It ain't no FXR3, but way more practical for Binx and I on the road! But I have 4 other Street Bikes. So what does that say about what I think a REAL bike is! It's also why I ride a SERK and not an FD! Them FD guys really KILL ME!!! ;D ;)

Cleaning up my Emails, I came across one I got from my bike a few months ago. Thought I'd share it with youze!!!

"Hi. My name is Joy! I’ve just acquired a new owner who seems very passionate about having me. I’m excited to be finally getting the attention I deserve. After all, I’m one special motorcycle! I’ve heard my new owner is a little wild when it comes to riding style and modifications. Well, don’t worry, I’ve got what it takes to handle what he’ll dish out. And I’ll love every minute of it too. I’ve been waiting 9 years to be let out of the pen and let loose, and be treated really special. Now maybe I’ll finally get the chance to run like the wind as I was made to do! Well, wish me luck with my new owner! I think I’m gonna need it! But I’m up to the task!!!"

See, she really IS the bike for me!!! :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3: ;)

Hmmm........haven't been here in awhile. A lot's been done to Joy since I got her. And she's in right now for a lot more! Before I even had her shipped to me from CA, I had Jim do a buncha stuff to her. S&S Super E, Cycle Shack M pipes, Dyna ignition/coils, chrome F master cyl, new rear tire, can't remember what else now. When I got her home, I changed the bars to Flanders "Original Apes" 12.5", and used 4" risers. Still not enough pullback, so I went back to the stock 4"pullback risers. Much better, but a lil too tall. So I'm going with 2.5" pullback risers. This should put it where I need it. Also reinstalled the mid-controls/highway peg setup she was stock with. Forward controls don't belong on an FXR. Changed to HD Flame Collection pegs and grips. I added the 330mm bitubo shocks (and they seem to be MADE for this bike), a buncha chrome brackets to replace stock galv. ones, larger HD passenger backrest with HD Sport Luggage Rack, and chrome starter solenoid cover!

Now to finish her up (for now anyway). Not going to take the engine apart yet, but time for a cam, that's for damn sure! This is the work she's at Vern's right now for:

-Andrews EV27 cam, B138 inner cam bearing, Sifton Lifters, new cam chest and rocker box gaskets. Adjust timing and carb.
-Carlini Torque Arm
-Custom Cycle Engineering Fork Brace
-HD 4-1/2" Bullet Halogen Headlight Assembly
-PM Chrome 6-piston DB front and 4-piston rear calipers
-Adjure Flush Front Axle
-Chrome Rear Axle, Spacers and Hardware
-Traxxion AK-20 Cartridge Fork Conversion
-Chrome Lower Shock Bolts
-Remount rear turn signals as close to the rear strut as possible
-Repack and adjust neck bearings
-Braided SS Speedo cable
-Velve Ride Polished Stabilizers

I also plan to dyno her before and after the work just to see how that cam does. Yeah, full report to follow! Youze expect anything less! ;)

That should catch youze up for now. Here's a pic of how she looked last before I dropped her off yesterday! :2vrolijk_21:

Well, Vern and NSMC have decided to part ways. I spoke to the owner of NSMC who called to ask me what I wanted to do with Joy since Vern's leaving. So I called Vern and asked him what he wanted to do. Vern's been a personal friend of mine, and has worked on all my bikes, for MANY years. I only know the NSMC guys thru him. I like them and I like their shop. But I'm loyal first to my Brothers. And Vern's a Bro. So my bikes go where he goes. I pulled Joy and her parts out of NSMC, and the job's on hold until Vern tells me where he's gonna work on her. He might even do it at my house. I enjoy the relationship I have at NSMC, and still intend to do business with them. But Vern will continue to do the work on my bikes. ;)

So now I'm waiting on Vern to lemme know what to do with Joy, and when and where he's doing the job. So she's on hold for a bit til Vern gets everything figured out in his life. Like I said, he's a brother and I'll do what I can to help him out, like he would for me. Joy will wait til he's ready for her. Not a biggie. She doesn't NEED this stuff, she just WANTS it!!! Stay tuned, this show will be back on the air sometime soon! ::) ;D ;D ;D

Just waiting for Vern to get setup at our buddy Joefee's house. He's gonna work outta Joeff's garage for awhile before deciding what to do with himself. I'm hoping he'll take the bike before I leave for MV. But I know Vern, and this might take a lil while! :nixweiss: :D ;)

Damn! Still waiting on Vern! Meantime, I picked up a set of them real nice V-Thunder Velva-Ride Heavy Duty Stabilizers to replace the 2 stock ones. Those, coupled with that Carlini torque arm, should keep the drive train aligned just fine, and not allow any flexing at all. Might even add a TrueTrack to it too for that missing third link to keep them 3 rubber mounts in line! ;)

WooHoo!!! Vern just called! He's ready for Joy now! Dropping the bike off in a few! Can't wait to get her done up MY way!!! :smilie_staub: :smilie_staub: :smilie_staub:

The list of stuff going on her is in Reply#479 here. Still waitin on the Velva Ride Stabilizers, but with the legs having to go to Traxxion anyway, it shouldn't hold anything up at all. Hopefully I'll have her back in 2-3 weeks!!! :2vrolijk_21: ;)

HeHe!!! This IS my therapy! Can't imagine how I'd be without motorcycles in (as) my life! :nixweiss: :nixweiss: :nixweiss: :D ;)

Well, I dropped Joy off and Vern removed the fork legs immediately. I'm pulling the bitubos off the FXWG to go back to Traxxion for heavier springs. The fork legs and shocks should be at UPS by tonight, destination GA!!! :2vrolijk_21:

Oh yeah it is! I have a stock '85 FXWG front end on a stock spec rigid wishbone frame. The fork was too long due the the rake on the '85. We used 3-1/2" shorter upper tubes with the stock guts (less the spacers). Still not enough movement to it. I spoke to Frank at Forks By Frank and he said to just cut the springs down some. They don't make shorter springs for these things! ;)

Parker was leaning over my shoulder as I was briefly looking over your pictures earlier today Howie.  When scrolled by this she laughed out loud and made great theatre of doing a back somersault away from the monitor.  Then she pops up, points at the timer cover and says "Howie's head is shinier than yours is Uncle Donnie!"   :huepfenlol2:
