103" upgrade
« on: December 27, 2005, 10:17:32 AM »

OK, I need opinions. I have $4000.00 to spend on the 06 Fatty. I want to get the most
performance I can. I have V&H Pipes and a race tuner right now thats it. Whats next ?
Also I have a 5 year extended warranty, so I guess I need to stay within parameter.
OPINIONS PLEASE......

I'm sure you'll get lots of opinions here but at a minimum you should look at getting the heads re-worked, gear drive cams, and pistons to bump the compression up a bit. Materials and machine shop labor should run about $2,500-$3,000. Shop labor for the install of the parts and Dyno would take up the last $1,000.

As far as the warranty, forget about it if you want to upgrade the motor.

HD, AM I better off having the heads reworked ? I have seen SE heads with 113" on them- Is
that an option or would it not be cost effective?. Also the Cam Gear you refer to is that
the Timkin setup I have read about in here? What Pistons do you recommend? Thanks for the
help-

Do you have the heads that came on the bike? With "103" on them. If so they should be re-worked. The gear drive set is for the Cams. The Timkin Bearing is for the crank shaft. You will need to pull the motor and split the cases for the Timkin upgrade. As far as choice for pistons and cams it is best to get pistons, cams, and head work that play well together. You will need to discuss this with the shop that is doing your head work to make sure that they all get along.

For what you have in mind, you really need to cancel your extended warranty, because it won't be worth the paper it's written on with major engine mods. Your also going to probably trash your factory warranty cause HD will only warranty the Street Legal builds, like the one you have now.  Some dealers will warranty their own work, but be sure to ask questions before you tear into it.

The 113" kit requires new jugs, pistons, rings, and machining to your cases.  Then you need cams, heads, push rods, valve train assem., and if I remember correctly the rocker box has to be machined as well.  All this is going to put you over the $4K limit you have.

If you get a Screamin' Eagle Parts catalog and talk to the Service Mgr at your dealer...  Find out how far you can go without voiding your warranty.  This varies from dealer to dealer.  If you can, I'd look at the 'HTCC' CNC heads, different HD cams, 'Perfect Fit' pushrods, and pistons.  Does the '06 SE FatBoy come with the high output starter?  This would be money well spent, and of course pressure release valves in the heads.

Later.   8-)

I'm learning as I go here, so bare with me- The 88" engine has upgrade kits available through
SE to go to 95" or even 103". Is there not a kit to upgrade the 103". I guess my ignorance to this
had me thinking I could just have a kit installed. I thought I could just get the 113" kit. My last post on this I got some feedback on the heads I have being " Hemi Style" and not the best design. Thanks

If you've got an FLSTFSEI coming... it is a 103".  If you add V&H pipes, and a race tuner, it should perform pretty well.  Like I said earlier... Talk to your dealer, the Service Manager, and do your homework.

Do the pipes, and race tuner, ride the bike for a while...  you might find that it's all you need.

The more you change, and the more you spend, the increases get smaller.  You're big improvements will be with cam and heads.  Go mild, or wild.  YOU have to find your comfort zone.  The balance between Performance and Cost, and you also have to include reliability.

Good Luck!
Ride Safe.

Thanks Hubbard, I do ride with some machines that are pretty intimidating. Two of my buds
have Custom Chop's, and to make it worse my best friend just bought a Kendal Johnson Custom that will scare you... Not that I want to make my bike what its not, I just want it to be the best it can be......I'm on the east coast and I havnt found a builder yet that I would trust, I'll post
for that as well. I am going to have to give all my warranty up for this so I want it to be
a first class job. Thanks for all the help... and yea hubbard... WFO...

I got referals from the dealership on 2 of the mechs they recommended.  Both got rave reviews from several customers that they built big hp and upgraded bikes for.  One guy I spoke with had done a very similar build, to what I was after, on his road king (though without the 50mm throttlebody...new part this year).  I spoke with the mech and he showed me several bikes he'd built that were in the shop (for winter storage) and I got a few more ideas.

Anyway, like they said, you gotta check things out.  Has he ever worked on a bike, does he smell like a brewery, does he have grease under his fingernails.  All useless questions if he can't turn a wrench :)

I have a 103 with HTCC ported heads and matching stroker psitons, a 258 cam and other stuff listed below. It makes 113 HP and 115 TQ. Very Happy with the bike and would do it again, and its all harley except the pipes and air cleaner.

Based upon your expertise, what would your suggestion be in going gear drive with your setup.  Your package is very popular at the local shop, but no one has really settled on the best gear drive cam option.  Appreciate your thoughts.
