DAWGS 95 INCH MOTOR
« on: May 05, 2006, 07:37:02 AM »

Well I got the diaper glide motor back together and went for a ride last night. I am very imperssed with the initial results. I need to get at least 500 miles on it before I will even consider a dyno tuning session. The motor had a few things changed inside to try to make a little more power. The 2 major changes were the replacement of the SE pistons and replaced them with KB pistons. In the past I have forund that the KB's made a little more power because of the heat transfer. Although I have never tried them in a two cammer before just in EVO's. The second change was to replace the CV44 with the monster CV51 carb. This is going into untested waters on a 95 inch motor. I may replace it with the 44 but for right now and untill I get the dyno done I will leave it on the bike. The build on this top secret 128 HP 95 inch motor are as follows.

H/D big bore cylinders bore 005 over to fit pistons
KB 3.875 + 005 pistons
Cometic head gasket
Very expensive stock heads rewelded and reshaped ports milled a bunch. 2.00 intake and 1.64 exhaust valves setup for 700 plus lift with unknown springs (manley or crane I think)
Intake ported to match heads
Wes Brown spec cams with gear drive
Fueling super pump with Zippers shim
Fueling lifters
Crane Roller Rockers
S&S pushrods
H/D monster 51mm carb
Thunder Header
H/D adjustable ignition

The squish and the valve to piston clearence are tight to say the least. Both are right at the min. The best part about this bike is it looks stock. The idle is turned down so it is really hard to hear the cam and the gear drive. The 51CV looks stock with the exception on the monster air cleaner. The only thing that would give it away is the Thunder Header but hey we all change our pipes. It is a fun bike to bar hop on.  PIcs of the bike tonight.

I have a bro running a carureted 95" set up a lot like yours. He's getting about 107 ft lbs and 103 hp. Also, it jumps up to those numbers really quick because of cam profiles, so it feels even faster than those dyno numbers would suggest. His only issue is gas mileage. He only gets about 19mpg,  meaning a tank just about gets you 100 miles. Kind of an issue on long rides.

The gas milage sucks but this is only my bar hopper. Maybe a trip into work once in a while but not much more. The bike is an 02 with just over 6k miles. So you can see I don't ride it much. The heads are the trick in this one. When I got them I WAS ACTUALLY SCARED TO USE THEM. I have never seen a set of heads cut like these. This package makes in the high 120's to mid 130's in H/P all day long most of depending on exhaust with the TQ numbers hanging around 120. This is a pretty common combination in Fla and yes it is real and yes it works.

Reading your post above on your expected dyno numbers, I went back and reread your laundry list. With the heads milled .085 you must be running close to 11.5/1 compression. If memory serves, every.040 is 1 point on the compression scale. It runs on pump gas ?

Spider it runs great on pump gas and the dyno numbers are  expected this package does it all day long. I don't know what if any I can pick up with the pistons and the CV51 on a 95 is untested waters up here in the mountains. The people I have talked to about it think I can pick up a few H/P and if I change to a supertrapp exhaust I can expect some more.

MARK I will be at work tomorrow for 24. Monday morning I will try to get a few pics of the bike. V has seen the paint but not on the bike. She is having a fit and wants to see it. I must say it is a nice looking bike.

Jimp tell Wes and Pammy I said hello. They are great people and I love his work. I know a few on this board will doubt that this motor will produce those kinda numbers but we know different now don't we. They don't call him Mr Horsepower for nothing. I did cut loose on it last night and I was very suprised. I have been riding a 103HP/104TQ SEEG for over a year and I can tell you the SEEG isn't in the same league. I sure hope it wakes up when Zippers gets done with her.

AND if you aren't going to use it, I'll buy it!!!  I need a nice new camera to go with the nice new bike anyway!  Bring the Rebel to MB.  I'll download them and mail them to myself before I leave!!  I promised Q a pic!

BTW, is the Harlem Glide making the ride?  Who is coming with Fatboy?  The other race dude?

Well you now know the answers to all of your questions!!!!!

Now to get back to the 95 inch motor. It ran sluggish when I did open it up. Met with John Golden in Myrtle to try to dial it in a little closer. THE MOTOR WAS REAL SLUGISH as time went on. First dyno run 110 H/P and 108 T/Q with the power dropping off sharply. Yep she was wet sumping. I either have one of the bad super pumps or a nicked O ring or both. I am home from Myrtle now and I am going to pull the oil pump tonight.

So those funny looking heads DO MAKE POWER!!!!! I do expect to see the numbers right where I was told they should be. And yes the bike is fun to ride!!!!

THE DAWG,
How did you diagnose the wet sumping? I am not familiar with this. Could you please explain the symptoms? & your comment about "One of the Bad Super Pumps" concerns me alot! I say this as I feel something is not quite right with my motor since the cam & pump job even though it seems to run fine. Booked in for SERT dyno tune on Friday 19th May. Mabe the dealer will pick up on something, their tuner is suposed to be one of the best down here in Australia.

PS: I can't imagine what a slugish 110hp/108tq feels like!

Aussie when you wind the motor up it feels like someone has something tied to the back of your bike trying to hold you back!!!! 110HP and 108TQ feels good on a light bike with a 95 inch motor. I have a corbin seat but it wasn't on. The HD seat I had on will let your A$$ slide off if you let it. But it is fun to ride!!!!

She is very slugish. Had a broken O ring between the oil pump connector and the case. I have one of the bad fueling pumps. The connector is tooooo big by about .023. That is what caused the o ring to split. It will up and running tomorrow night.

ZIPPERS!!!!!!!  I got mine from CCI I think. But I really don't remember. I picked up 4 last year and all were good except the one I used!!!!!!

Fueling had a bad run of pumps last summer. Yours could have sat on the shelf. The only way you will know is to remove it and mic it.

Well the bike has been repaired. Took it out tonight. Great air temps in the 50's with very low humity. This bike screams. I need to get her back on the treadmill next week. I can tell the numbers are way up from the last dyno.

THE DAWG,
Could you give me the measurements for the correct length & the incorrect length connector as I think I need to check it out.

I had my bike (SERT) dyno tuned at the HD dealer & they thought the numbers were great, but were not impressed about me using non genuine HD parts & also said my exhaust (V&H big shots) was not helping.
I was not very impressed at the numbers as in stock form with those pipes I had 98hp / 102tq that was untuned & now after 5 hours of tuning with the Redshift 575 gear drives I have 94hp / 100tq. It does run well & feel pretty good though, but I was expecting around 102hp / 107tq. Does it sound like a bad pump to you?

Aussie for a stock 103 with 575 cams yours sounds about right. The TQ number is a little low and that could be caused by the pipes. If you got the fueling super pump from Zippers it is right, they check all of them before they go out. You can also pinch the O ring between the oil pump connector and the case during assembly. This will also cause the motor to wet sump and will cause the motor to produce very low numbers.

I think yours is Ok.

AUSSIE the connector between the oil pump and the case is the problem. It is not the length it is the dia of the connector. If you measure the LARGE area on the connector (not where the o ring goes) it should measure .890 to .900 the bad ones measure .917 to .923. It will hit the top left corner of the case and cause the connector to be cocked to one side and split the O ring. Also the bad pumps have a different part number, they changed the number when they corrected the problem.

Yes she is pretty. I got a ton of compliments today. Put about 250 miles on her just bar hoping. One good thing though 126 miles and she only took 3.2 gallons. So mileage with this rocket isn't that bad. I am going to remove the 51 mm carb and replace it with the 44 mm carb and see how she acts.

AUSSIE if you still have the box PM me with the part number and I will check it for you. I still don't think you have any problem as your numbers are in line with the others with that set of cams. One thing you must remember my 95 has some very trick parts in it and your 103 is not even in the same neighborhood per say.

Actually, I found that when I ride her at higher RPMs, she gets better gas mileage.  That's the hardest part to get used to!  It appears that bike is optimal at 6000 rpms.  I rode the backroads through Cave Spring, GA over to Lake Weiss.  I rode in 2nd at 70mph around 7,000 rpms in the curves.  When I shifted to 3rd, she didn't seem to handle as well.  Thunderheader or not, she doesn't sound like a potato chugger at that point and it's hard to get used to!  I did NOT ride at 115 on the way home!  I passed one truck that seemed to want to share MY lane at 115.  I like speed, but I'm not stupid or careless.  I've only had one speeding ticket since I was 17 and it nearly cost me my license and $425!  Can't afford to get my insurance cancelled!

Didn't mean to imply that you are a speed demon. Just saw an opportunity to give you the "business". ;D I'd be the first to admit at times I get into the motor revving up, and the pipes singing there song, and look down at the speedo meter and realize I need my license to work, and have to slow down. :o Besides "getting on" it every now and then keeps carbon from building up on pistons and valves. Now that would be a helluva ride!!  My problem is I like to drive everything at about 130 mph!  The only reason I haven't on the V is that I'm still getting familiar with the bike!!  The reason I chose to upgrade is that the Sporster would ride comfortably at 100 mph but just didn't have any get-up-and-go juice left.  And on I-285 if you need to move from 100 to 120 it needs to be QUICK!!  When I was riding at 100 in the fast lane and bagger were passing me, it was like, "Houston we have a problem!"

THE DAWG,
There is no part number on the box (just a white box with red writing saying "FEULING TWIN CAM OIL PUMP")all I have is Wallys part number Item:

Fueling Super Pump for Twin Cam 88 Models
Part Number: [os] AP 09-7000
Quantity: 1
Price: 299.50
Extended Price: 299.5

But after seeing street stalkers numbers today I am fairly close to that so it must be OK. I was just expecting a bit better I suppose

Cheers

I didn't think there was a problem with you bike. The cam is a bolt in fix for the cam the MOCO put in the bike to satisfy the EPA. The cam profile was trying to raise cylinder pressures(which it did) and bring in the TQ curve earlier and keep it in longer (which it does) I actually lost HP numbers but increased my TQ numbers which is a good thing. I think your oil pump connector is OK.

Naw, Man!  That's the only positive with a Bat-Wing Fairing, the down side being it contributes to the Motorsickle trying to lift, at those speeds.  That's when She gets a little woozy.  Later--HUBBARD

Yeah, 'er 'uh, Vgirl,
Me, too, but 130 with no windshield?  That would be torture for Ol' Hub. :'(  I rode a V-Rod when they were first introduced to the market.  Definitely performed well on the high-side of the Tach.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] You appear to have some of the same riding habits as me, in that I would rather ride the 4-Lanes and Interstates, than the back roads.  Had too many close calls on the two-lanes.  Just flat don't like 'em.  I mean, I'll ride 'em occasionally, but definitely in a different mode.  Later--HUBBARD

I thought that was the way to ride! Click into sixth, set the cruise and make some time. :)

The 130 is a tad fast for my Bagger but is only the start of third gear for my Busa. ;D Ahhh what a rush......

That is the way to go. I don't have a sixth speed, but definitely like setting the cruise (usually about 8 - 9 miles over posted speed limit, unless I can pace a vehicle going faster  ;) ), putting on some tunes, and letting the bike eat up some highway.
