06 SEVrod PCIII Dyno Tune
« on: February 10, 2007, 06:29:34 PM »

As some of you know, I got the 06 SEVrod last July, and before delivery had the SE Muffs installed, K&N, and ECM Flash for that set-up.  Well, after 1100 miles, the bike still had a stumble in the 2500 to 4K range...like a miss.  Beyond 4K, it ran fine, though it still felt a bit "flat" at times at steady RPM.  Soooo...had a bolt on the heat shield that was stipped from the factory, and one of the Chrome Muffler Clamps that came on the bike was discoloured and pitted.  Took it in to have that done, and the dealer was running a special on pipes, A/C and PCIII, with a free dyno tune with the purchase of all three.  Since I had purchased the other two items when the bike was new, and paid for the flash that wasn't working properly, they agreed to do the PCIII and dyno for the cost of the PCIII.

Bike was running waaaaay too rich with the flash, so that is what was causing the stumbling, as you can see.  No dramatic improvment in HP/TQ, but drivability is MUCH improved, and the A/F is about as close as it can get.  The guy spent 5 hours tuning the bike, trying various mixes, and this was as good as it gets with the pipes I have.  I am satisfied with the result...I could get more with a different exhaust, but I like the looks of the SE Muffs (like the stock pipes), and it's got a nice, throaty sound like a small block Chevy.

Here's the chart...

TERRY MINES IS THE SAME WAY IN THE 3-4K RANGE. VERY RICH AND USES TOO MUCH FUEL. GOOD ON THE TOP END. I NEED TO GO TO THE DYNO TOO WHEN TIME PERMITS.

Dave...did you get the flash or do you have a PCIII or SERT?  Actually, I was very surprised that the flash made the bike run so rich.  The tune made the bike run SOOO much smoother.  It was cold up here yesterday, so all I did was ride it from the dealer home (about 6 miles) but I could tell a difference when just cruising.  These bikes are so fast, it's scarey!!  Fun to ride though!!

If you have he PCIII, I will get my MAP and send it to you...on our water cooled engines, it should be really close for your bike too, though I don't know what kind of pipes you are running.

Ditto on the flash...I plan upon having Tiley's (HUBBARD's along with others shop) address this this month if I can swing it.

Josh,  please report on your results when you get this done.  The numbers on the SEVrod are hard to find...I've looked on the Vrod forum too.

Best I can come up with is HD says the SE model has 10% (approx) more HP than the 1130 motor.  If that's correct, then HP at the crank would be about 125 +or- a tad.

I don't remember if you've got the 05 or 06 model, so I'd really like to see what you end up with.  I know a better pipe would give more, but my bike's running good, and sounds good too, so I'm happy.  I know Jorge has an ongoing project with his new X bike, which is also the 1250 motor, but he's going to put a different pipe on it, so we'll get to hear about his as well.

109 HP and 75TQ is not bad out of a 1250CC engine though...

I'll see if I can find my dyno from John Golden and post it.  I couldn't find anyone willing to share their numbers on the Vrod forums either.  When someone asked me for mine, they said, "Yeah, mine are real close."

I also had someone at a fund-raiser asked if I was interested in a custom map and when I told them that I had already had one done, he asked if they could use my bike on their dyno to compare to another Vrod that he was doing, and he'd tell me how good the guy was and how good the map was.  Well, he did a chart with both our bikes and mine surpassed his.  I'll see if I can find it too and post both.

But if I remember correctly, my numbers from the Rolling Thunder dyno somewhere.  I wonder if they save them.  I might see if John's son can email them to me.  The first time I rode it to the dyno, I thought the bike stalled.  I told John that and he was very familiar with it and also corrected "the dip" caused by using a Thunderheader.  I have no complaints!

Very good numbers, V...John is no doubt the best around on the PCIII.  Your Thunderheader helps a lot in that regard too.  One of the things I liked about my V was the way the pipes blend with the lines of the bike, so I opted to stick with that "look".  No doubt I could get a lot better performance if I were willing to go to some kind of 2 into 1 exhaust.  It will be interesting to see what Jorge comes up with since he is installing the new V&H system for the vrod he just got.  He's doing major surgery on the bike right now, so it will probably be next month before we know.

Amigo Terry.......The V&H that I wanted are not still available. Then I went to the Supertrapp and athe end when I had the exhaust in my hands they didn't fit the model of my bike so I had to return it. Talking with the VROD specialist technician at Peterson he recommended to go with the D&D Fat Cat so I ordered them ....I haven't received them yet. I still have the bike in the process to be transformed in something nice....I believe that I will start putting the pieces together next week....and maybe it will be ready for Daytona.........

The pic shows your bike with the D&D exhaust......I got already the K&N air filter and the PCIII.......let's see what happen.....

Jorge...can't wait to see the finished product, my friend.  That's a nice pipe you picked and I'm sure will give you some good numbers!!

Wish we could join you guys in Daytona, but we would only be able to ride down Friday and would have to return Sunday or Monday at the latest...hardly worth the trip. :(

I tuned mine on a dyno w the SERT.I'm running quiet V-Mods and a K&N.I have close to 115hp w 82ftlbs of torque. We saw some higher #'s but this is where it runs best for all around riding.
I'd like to know how in the hell it takes a person 5 hrs to tune a stock EFI engine.
Which Peterson's location did you go to?

Don't know what you're talking about there... :nixweiss:

I'm not sure how the flow compares between the V-Mod muffs and the SE Slips, nor do I know how the sound compares, having never heard a set.

With regards to taking 5 hours to tune, it happened over an afternoon and the next morning.  Since I was not paying for the tune, nor the Dyno time, and was not present in the room when it was being done, I didn't worry too much about how much time it took them.  It was only the second Vrod they had done, so they played around with different parameters, I guess. The main thing I was after is making the bike drivability better, smoother performance over the entire powerband, particularly in the lower RPM's, and a decent, flat A/F ratio.  They seem to have achieved those things for me, so I'm happy with it, at least for the time being.
