Very ,Very Nice.
You are one lucky Dude to have such talent in the 'Family'.
Does he do this as a hobby, or for a living ?
Will look for more pics of the completed project.

Thanks for all the compliments [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

He's really good.  He is a tatoo guy for trade and paints on the side.  I figure this project is a great way to give him some well deserved advertisement as I make my way all over the country.  I would like to see him do this more often because he's pretty darn good at it.   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I'm on travel to San Diego for business and when I get back Thursday night, I'll start with the wiring and make my plugs up for the quick disconnect.  I think Chris (the expert painter) might do me the tail of the Eagle post-rip on his way in, on the top of my tour pak.

Laters,

Steve

Steve,
That's an awesome paint job. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] Your daughters boyfriend needs to open up a tattoo shop/airbrush paint place next to a bike shop. If his skin art is as good as his airbrush skills talk about unlimited client potential. :o

Hi all,

Just got from business in San Diego.  Chris is the name of the painter, he lives in Hanford, CA.  about 40 miles directly south of Fresno, CA.  His number is (559) 367-2507.  I won't even try to guess what the "non-family"  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]  price is, so just ask him.  He stays very busy with the tats, so leave a message.  Just for the record, the pix of the eagle in this post is BEFORE clear coat.  Since I've been in San Diego this week, I still haven't even seen it done yet, so it only gets better. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Chris wanted me to tell everyone thanks for the compliments [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

[highlight]Wow!  That is one Awesome piece of artwork! Where did you get the idea from? Definately an eye catcher, one of a kind.  [/highlight]

It started from a tatoo they have posted in their shop.  It slants up and to the left and has the US Flag in the background.  The eagle looked weak, and I wanted mine to look pissed off, afterall he just ripped the _ell out of my paint job.  I didn't like brightness and contrast of the flag against the centenial gold, and didn't think it was a dignified way to display the flag anyway (22 years retired Navy).  So he put the harley logo "behind the paint" and then did a lot of smoothing and artistic license.  I couldn't believe he could make it look 3D like that.

He already said that he would airbrush me the tail of the eagle going through some rips on the top of my tourpak.  Expect the harley logo to be reversed, to make it even more a complete theme.  Then the concept will be complete.

He is good [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I wanted to throw in a status update.  I have a few crappy pictures of the Dakota Digital speedo/tach swapout.  I took it apart Friday night, then most of Saturday, cut, spliced, soldered, and shrinkwrapped all the new wires in the console.  I decided after much pondering to go ahead and connect the speedo's turnsignals, neutral, highbeam, and low oil idiot lights and disconnect the LEDs on the console.  Finally made that decision as I didn't want to look at more than one place especially at speed.
The only hitch I ran into is the tach signal.  I must have starred at the wiring diagram for an hour trying to make sure I wouldn't disconnect something vital.  Well the whole thing worked out great BUT, I found out the hard way after finishing the speedo calibration run and gear indicator calibration run, THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL didn't work [smiley=nixweiss.gif]
The tach on the '03 transmits an output signal to the cruise module.  Even though the cruise module gets the same engine speed signal directly from the ECM, it still wants to see the tach output.  The Clymer book labelled the signal as the green light indicator signal.  I ran the diagnostic on the cruise and it gave me a 232 code.  So I had to tear into the tach signal splice and reconnect it back to the tach, while leaving it connected to the new Dakota speed/tach guage.  I was lucky that hooking both up to the ECM in parallel didn't fry anything.  Quite a gamble.  But I will write it off as me being luckier than good.  Probably something about the high impedance of the analog gauge or digital, I forget which, but the ECM probably only feels one of them on the signal line.
So if anyone does this, might want to splice the ECM tach signal and the green light indicator together at the tach plug if you don't keep the analog tach, or keep both like I did.
Anyway, pictures tonight when I get home.

how did you get a code from the CC module?
Title: Re: 03 SERK Dragonfly II
Post by: jachin72 on May 10, 2006, 05:00:38 PM
Naitram,

I left that out as my post got pretty long.  Found it on page 59 in the Clymers or something around that page.

Procedure:  With ignition off, press and hold the right side to set.  Then turn on the ignition without starting the engine.  The green light will flash at you the three digits with a 1 or 2 second pause in between digits.  If you have more than one fault, I think there is a longer pause, then it flashes the next one.  Not sure as I only had one code.  The faults are on page 69 or around that area in a table in the Clymers.

OBTW, only the MOCO can reset it.  So at my next service I will direct them to reset the code since it works again.

Since the rear speaker pods came with no install instructions or templates (beware of this if you order through DF), I skipped over those to the inner fairing fitment.  Here are a few pix of how it looks and fits.  Some of the shots are of the tach and nacelle (sic?) area that will be between the fairing halves.  First off will be how it looks to to the rider:

Chris brought the fairing by last night about 7:00pm.  I am going to Phoenix then on to Las Vegas Thursday night.  So with so little time to take the SERK down to the bone and route all the wires, including rear speaker pods, oil pressure and temp sensors, I just put it together and mounted it last night.  Fits very nice.  I'll hook up the gadgets next weekend.  Here's the pictures and yes, clear shots with all the fairing parts:

Naitram,

Just got back this evening from a trip to Phoenix, then to Las Vegas, then home.  1,345 miles total.

I only had enough time to put it together and fit it to the bike for the big trip.  Now I have to take it back off, split the halves, make my wiring harness, connect the two oil sensors, hook up the radio, put on a new windshield (need more height), and before I slap it all back together, I will try the epoxy trick.  Didn't you say it didn't work for you?

BTW, the Dragonwings worked pretty good.  Tried them in different open positions as we were baked to death in Arizona.

FYI to anyone reading this thread considering buying a detachable fairing for a RK or Softail as well, I would think the posts on this thread might seem daunting. It certainly seems like a lot of work to me reading what these guys have been doing. I truly like the Dragonfly. I think it more closely resembles a factory batwaing fairing. However, I am electronically challenged. Sooooo, I bought a Hoppe Industries fairing. To hook up a Hoppe, all you do is run a cable under your gas tank, hook one wire to the + side of your battery, one to the - side and a third into your ignition. The forward end of that cable plugs into the fairing and that's it, your rolling. The stereo in mine works fine and as you can see from the pics I posted on the RK Fairing thread it looks good as well. So, if you're like me and doing a ton of wiring and everything Naitram and Gilligan have been talking about is beyond you then check out the Hoppe. If you've got the time and the skill set and are particular about electronics, then I'd say the Dragonfly is the one for you. Just wanted to mention that both types have their merits.

PS
Naitram, the decal looks great. It goes with your paint color real well. Don't mention the $12 thing to anyone, they'll think it cost you a lot more.

Big Brian,

My problem is I am my own worst enemy when it comes to gadgets and such.  Can't just be happy with a radio and 4 wires.  Dragonfly even gave me a cool-looking trailer hitch 4 wire quick disconnect doohicky.  For the basic setup with radio and cigar lighter, it's pretty simple.  But NOOOOOOOOOOO, I have to have Dakota Digital gauges, rear speakers, deutsch connectors, yadda yadda yadda.

Like they say over on the 351 Cleveland site, this would be time to hit myself with a rusty camshaft.

Naitram, know a guy who could do it ;)

I am glad I did mine before I read all these posts. Whew, I'm exhausted. I have a few pictures of my DF install on my home page here. I made mine a more permanent installation which screws me for servicing the fork oil. I have to do it myself, because it's take a few days to explain to the mechanic how to take it off. I was wondering, Gilligan, are you comming to Cripple Creek? A few of these '03 SE RK's with the fairings installed ought to be pretty awesome to see.
I am probably 1/2 way between the group on here as far as  ::)mechanically/technically/spelling those words challanged. I guess I did pretty good though...NH

Does the fairing eliminate buffeting?
I have the stock and a standard height windshield, horrible buffeting with either one on.
Riding glasses actually bobble around blurring vision.

Also, does it have any effect on the airflow by the passengers right leg?
I have the Rinehart True Duals but wife still complains of her right leg cooking on warm days.

Thanks, denim
Title: Re: 03 SERK Dragonfly II
Post by: jachin72 on July 13, 2006, 12:58:08 AM
Denim,

It reduced buffeting significantly, but not completely.  A very cheap fix for your problem is to get the fork mounted defectors.  They worked FANTASTIC for me until I got the screamin eagle passing lights.  Unfortunately not compatible with those.  I have a taller windshield coming from clearview for my fairing, (long lead time  :( ) which should fix the rest of my problem.

The buffeting is really coming from the airflow around the bottom of your windshield which then hits your midsection and mixes with air over and around the top of your windshield.  To prove my point, ride with your legs as close to the tank as you can, then open your legs up, buffeting gets worse, then put your feet up on the highway pegs, buffeting even gets worse.  The fork mounted deflectors got rid of almost all the buffeting even if my feet were up on the highway pegs.

Another source of the airflow under your windshield is the lack of a deflector between the forks.  MOCO removed it on our bikes due to engine overheating.  I've had 2 stealers say not to do it, but now that I have a digital temp gauge and some ride time without it, now I can compare and see if it has a "real" effect.
Hope this helps,
Steve

Denim,

Forgot to answer your hot leg question.  Did you mean left side, where the pipe comes down past the passenger's left foot?

On mine I have foot pads, plus got the mounts that raise the pad 2 1/4".  So my wife's leg isn't anywhere near the pipe.  Only the left boot, and she reports no hot leg probs.  Also the lowers are vented and channel a grunch of air to both of our legs.  Going over Tehachapi pass a while back at night, it started getting a little chilly up above 4000 ft, so I reached down and closed the vents and wow, got nice and toasty.  Had to immediately open them back up once we got back down in the desert.

when i had to make this decison on my 02, it was gonna be more then a few dollars more then adding the fairing/tour-pak/lowers to get up to a SEEG.

yes i could have done better with private sale and then buy vs. the chitty trade offered by a few dealers. but that was time i did not have to spend. and i'm sure gilligan will agree with this "i liked it to much to get rid of it" and pulling that stuff of and running without the windshield has been nice in this heat. ( try that with an SEEG )

Well said Naitram and my sentiments exactly.  I couldn't think of parting with fat elvis.  I also wanted an Electraglide when I ran into my SERK.  From nearly the moment I bought the SERK, I laid out plans to get the pieces that would give me the 500+ miles per day comfort factor that I needed.  Those plans have come to fruition.  Very expensive plans, but what the heck, if not spent on the SERK, I would have blown it on a new Lexus or something like that.  And really who needs a Lexus when a CVO and a good dose of OCD does just as well ;D
But the best part of going Ultra SERK is just what you said.  I can strip 'er down to bare bones and turn just as many heads, tear around like a jacka$$, and dress it back up for the long trip a day later.  Fat Elvis has so many looks, it's almost like I have 3 or 4 bikes.

With all that said, the BB SEEG and the Cherry SEEG make my heart skip a beat every time I see one.  I hope I never have the money and close proximity to one of those at the same time.

Note to self: Stay broke when around those SEEGs.  [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif] But the SERK stays no matter what.  [smiley=drink.gif]

Do any of you that have an aftermarket fairing (dragonfly, hoppe industries, dead center cycles) have problems with CD's skipping from hitting bumps in the road, the bike idling, normal driving, etc...  If so what model of fairing do you have and when does the skipping occur most.  Also another question I have is how is the sound of the stereo at highway speeds - is the sound of the music loud enough to hear at 70 -  and what pipes do you have?  I am on the verge of buying a fairing but I am undecided on which one and as you can see by my questions above I have some concerns  [smiley=confused5.gif].  Thank you very much for you input as I'm sure it will aid me in making a purchase decision.

Incidentially, I have seen a lot of guys talking about different windshields. I can make anyone any size/color windshield. My experience (career) was with Corian (counter top stuff) and cutting/polishing plastic is a sinch for me. It would be an easy "can-do" for any DF Fairing owners.... Just putting it out there. I would only charge what it costs me, in hard terms. I had to re-make mine after having it broken out on Cripple Creek...

I believe what Brian is referring to is H-D part number 58520-79TC, Chrome Front Wheel Air Baffle Kit.  I have one installed on my SEEG, and it does seem to reduce the amount of air flowing up between the fairing and the tank.  I don't see any negative affect on engine cooling; in fact when you look at it on the bike it would appear to direct more air down to the engine, not less.  It could increase front end lift at high speeds, but I haven't noticed any problems up to 100 mph.....

Jerry
I have this on mine also (Jerry you probably already guessed that since it is chrome ;)) and concur. Someone had asked me also if it made the bike run hotter, but I haven't noticed that and thought as Jerry did that it directs more air to/across the motor.
