07B Head Gasket For 110 Motors
« on: April 23, 2008, 10:00:07 PM »

On April 22, 2008 I talked with Bob Dwyer / Rusty, here is one of the statements he made "your bike will have the new 07B Head Gasket which was tested for months and has been in production for a couple of weeks, this will end your Head Gasket leak problem". Bob Dwyer was in conference with the Chief Technician while making the statement. I am stating what the man told me. Any problem with the statement made by Bob Dwyer should be directed to Bob Dwyer Harley Davidson Supervisor 1-414-343-4056. I, as usual have to wait and see.

Hummm....... Why do I have the urge to get the vasoline?  I sure hope there's some truth here about taking care of the head gasket problem! Ok, let me hold my breath. Personally, I can't complain .  .  .  yet! My scooter is all good for now, for now, for now, for now, for now....

I believe that there is something more than the head gasket-I took my 07 SERK in for that leak and they replaced the whole top end-I am glad that Harley apparently knows about the problem-they should recall the 110 engines that are in question.  My bike did not start leaking till I had 9000 miles on it.  A lot of people that do not ride there bikes much-may not have a problem until the warranty is up on the bike.  These are just my thoughts about the leaking problem.  I only have about 1000 miles on my bike after the repairs and no leaks yet.

Of course there is more than a gasket problem with the 07 CVO's. Flywheels, Cylinder Liner Slippage, and the 3rd Generation Head Gasket(07B).

Fortunately none of those woes have visited the '07 SERK here since bringing it home almost 18 months ago and I've ridden it like my sport bikes.  Zero problems/issues.

That's great to hear. It is comforting that not everyone has had to deal with the problems.  :)

How about getting out there and making another movie for us? :2vrolijk_21:

Will do so!  BTW, Met an '07 SEEG rider today at a lunch place and asked him if he'd had any problems.  None was the response.

I'm at 10K on my 07 with no apparent issues. I did have to deal with two warranty items - the tach/speedo and some faulty chrome on the cluth cover. Other than that, no issues and I too tend to ride 'em hard and put 'em away wet.

110mofo, to bring you up to date on this failure.  As you probably know, the bike was trailered to Victorville HD.  The crank sensor was shredded and we all know what that means, "crank run-out".  Victorville took one look and ordered a complete new engine for Walt.  That was on a Friday; by the following Saturday he had a new engine and took the bike home, a very quick turn around.  BTW, the new engine has the new composite head gasket installed from the factory.

I think Harley is getting ramped up for "volume engine replacement" on the 110.  Walt is the third bike of my close friends to get a new motor.  The rest of us have all had at least the head gasket scenario problems.  I wonder if Harley has simply planned for at least two engines for every 110 CVO sold.  It's plausible since the MSRP is high enough to cover two engines per bike.  Hang on to your extended warranty!

I have been wondering about going there, because you lose the first two years of the extended warranty.

Did I miss something . . . .  How do you lose the 1st two years of extended warranty??

You don't. There is some confusion about how an extended warranties works. A Seven Year Extended Warranty extends your warranty out to a total of seven years, it's not a seven year extension, but instead a five year extension.

Received Kasper my 08 SEUC last night from the dealer. It's  been in the dealer 5 weeks and it was a great reunion to have her back!!! They did a complete top end and installed two new cylinders. The New 7B gasket was used on the cylinder heads and I found out that gasket has been around for a very long time and has been used on my production bikes from Harley.(Nothing New) Harley just made the big mistake of going with a multi layered metal gasket with rivets. I looked at the tech pub from Harley on the Cylinder Liners and was surprised to see that there is an allowable movement in the liners. If the liners don't move anymore that that set amount the new(old) 7B gasket which is a chromeric graphite gasket will keep the cylinder head sealed. If your liner comes unglued You will have a massive leak or more??? She is running very smooth and very strong!! The only dumb thing they did is get water in my Air Horn. A new one is coming!! P.S. Get all the air flow you can on that motor!! It loves Air!!!!! 8) 8) 8) 8)

You have a two yr factory warranty and if you bought the 5 yr extended warranty you get an extra 3 yr's of warrany with a $50.00 deductable and you can take your bike anywhere to have warranty work. The first two yrs of the extended warranty run side by side with the factory warranty.

mine 08 is in the shop now with the leaking head gasket problem...9300 miles, very disappointed but expected it to happen at some point after following our forum.  How long does it really take a top mechanic to do the work?? My dealer said 10-14 hours of billable (to HD) hours.

Book rate for shop on warranty head gasket/cylinder replacement is 3.9 hours.  Takes closer to 6 (real time) from what I have been told.

For an average tech this is not that big a deal.  As long as they torque it all correctly & don't install stuff backwards.......

For a good tech its easy.  By now they have very likely done a few of these so it's not new to them.

I rode mine a few hundred miles around the area I live to make sure it was stuck back together correctly before striking out on a long trip.

Checked for leaks the first 500 miles or so - now just when I wash it. 5,000 miles since the leak & all good so far.

Hi Dean,

we've been there. It should be between five and six hours actual time. And please do post the parts list of your work in the thread http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=25324.0 for information.

Ride safely,

Is it the rear gasket? If so, are they replacing only the rear?

so as I mentioned, I had gotten the call from my dealer late Tuesday about the leaking head gasket..said the soonest I'd get it back is end of the day on Saturday by the time they got the "kit" in and with 10-14 hrs labor.  I get a call 10:00 this morning that "I'm all done"..I said great, but there wasn't even enough time to get it in and get the work done. They said "well it's done". I guess they got it in on Wed and worked on it same day. I can't turn a wrench like most of you, but I did notice one of the screws on the derby cover was sticking out and hand loose..so I asked them to tighten it and check the rest of the screws..it just raises a red flag. I asked Harley direct if there is anything I should keep an eye on..he said "buddy, ride it like you stole it"...and I will
