Memphis Shades Batwing Fairing - SERK
« on: April 25, 2010, 12:21:24 PM »

I posted a separate thread (http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=48808.0) with some pics of my bike after I put a Memphis Shades Batwing Fairing on it and was asked for some additional pics of the fairing...

I'll attach a few pictures on this thread to keep the topics separated...  A couple of notes on what I've learned about this...

The parts list I used:
2330-0017   Memphis Shades Batwing Fairing
2320-0048   Memphis Shades Batwing Fairing Hardware Kit
2350-0111   Memphis Shades Batwing Fairing Wind Deflectors  (I haven't put these on yet so they're not in the pictures)
2350-0128   Memphis Shades Batwing Fairing Polished Stainless Steel Trim - Slim Style
2310-0216   Memphis Shades Batwing Fairing 7" Black Windshield
2310-0217   Memphis Shades Batwing Fairing 9" Black Windshield
3508-0011   Memphis Shades Batwing Fairing Windshield Storage Pouch

The mounting kit for the Memphis Shades fairing comes with new bushings to replace the black rubber ones that come from Harley.  Those bushings are wider than the Harley version to accommodate the latch on the Memphis Shades hardware.  You can’t really mix and match.  You either go with the Memphis Shades bushings and the fairing or the HD bushings and your stock mounting hardware.  I had thought that after I put the Memphis Shades version on I could still swap out to my windshield if I want to.  I won’t say you can’t force the issue but the guys at Memphis Shades suggested that I didn’t.

Memphis Shades windshields and fairing bag (storage pouch) are proprietary.  The fairing isn’t made to line up with windshields / bags from either HD or other 3rd parties.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Great pics, so how does the fairing perform?

I agree with previous post on the pics. When you have time can you tell us the pros and cons of the fairing. I have an 08 SERK with 2 different Clearview windshields but often wondered how I would like a QD fairing?

dont57 and RayG,

My apologies for the late reply on the ride review... sadly enough I haven't had much seat time since I installed the fairing and all of my rides to date have been short ones... :(

However, I've had the bike on the interstate and up to probably 80mph and so far it's worked fine.  It's stable and keeps a little more wind off of me as best as I can tell.  I haven't noticed a great deal of difference particularly with the 7" shield so I put the 9" on it.  That caused a more of the buffeting to go away.  I was afraid that I wouldn't like the look of the taller shield but it really isn't that much of a difference visually.

Bottom line... I'm keeping it on the bike... I do still need to get it sent off to Gene & Pam to get it painted but that's going to have to wait until riding weather goes away for a few months..

Bike looks great.  It will be interesting to see how many times you actually take the fairing off after you get used to it.  May want a CVO Ultra next time, a lot less work if you want a bat wing.  Great job!!!

Yeah... general consensus from the folks I ride with has been... "Why didn't you just buy an ultra?"   :confused5:  Truth of the matter is, I didn't  know anything about Ultras when I bought this bike so it wasn't even a consideration.  I fell in love with the ride and feel of this one during a demo day experience and I actually still prefer it so far after having now ridden Ultras.  Plus, unless you go to someone like Gene & Pam you're not getting an ultra with this paint scheme  ;)

The other benefit for me is the ability to change it around. Tour pak / no tour pak, shield / batwing, etc.  Probably seems a little crazy but I never claimed to be sane...  :zstupid:

Does the fairing do a good job of managing air flow for you ?

I would say "yes", but I have to admit that I didn't have much trouble with the shield so I can't say there's a ton of difference.  I guess I should mention that I generally ride with a modular helmet so I usually don't feel much of wind anyway...  I did take about a 5 mile ride down the interstate with a shorty helmet to see how it felt and I had no issues.
