Would anyone buy a 2009 SERG 110 with 120,000 miles?
« on: January 29, 2019, 08:23:50 PM »

Looking at a silver 09 SERG, looks good, but can't test ride. I'm in NY, bike is in TX. I have a 1990 EVO with 106,000 and still runs great, just looking to upgrade. Thanks in advance.

That would depend greatly on the price.  If you can get it at a low enough price to put a motor in it and still not have more $$ in it than the average 09 SERG is worth then I might consider it.

It was a unique model that year, with a nice paint scheme that still turns heads ten years later.

Price is $11,000. I've always liked the 2000 in orange, but the 09 silver is sharp. Also don't see any oil stains on cylinders.

For me it would have to be cosmetically brilliant at that price; and that's something you can't guarantee from half a continent away.  It's also something that is a subjective measure so you can't trust someone else's word or judgment.  Especially when that someone else is the owner/seller.

Have seen a few examples of those bikes sell in the last six months.  Lowest I know of was about $16.  Highest of the four I know of that sold was $20500.  So split the difference and consider a good negotiated average.  So $17-18K ?  Especially if you're not willing to pay top dollar.  At that versus the asking price you're eating up every bit of the difference buying an engine.  After that you've still got everything from handlebar bushings, to swingarm and other suspension consumables that are pieces you'd have to consider with that many miles.

It may not be an awful price (assuming outstanding cosmetics).  But it's not a home run either.

It looks very good cosmetically, but it has I think about 16" apes on it..are they hard to put back to stock?

You would not like the position of the stock, OEM bars.  If you don't like the bars that are on it, drop down to the 14" apes (same as the Harley close reach bars which were 2" up and 2" back closer to the rider....a very comfortable ride.  I still have them on my 13 CVO Ultra Classic.

If you're really interested in it, have him take it to the local HD dealership and have them do a compression test on both cylinders on your dime (pay the dealership by credit card over the phone, when he goes to pick it up, then the dealership will share information with you directly).  Ask them that knowing it's a high milage bike, what is their opnion of it in it's current condition....anything of immediate concern.   Then negotiate with the seller for your best offer.  Don't be afraid to go low with it.....he's not going to have people running at him to make an offer on it.

Another thought just occurred to me.....there's a good chance that he's sitting at home reading all of this.   :P

So if a broader price average is even lower than the four nice bikes I'd seen that only further reinforces the "not really a great deal" idea.  I'd not let high miles scare me off.  You've just got to account for a full slate of regular and consumable maintenance that has to be assumed hasn't been done plus an engine re-work or replacement.  All that adds up far more quickly than we (optimistically) assume until we're deep in the weeds.

Lowest I know of was about $16.

is that a correct price?  if so, was it totaled and anything salvageable?

I've never owned a twin cam, but have heard of the problems with the cam chains. I guess the hydraulic tensioners help, but still need to be checked. Wouldn't you think with that many miles some motor work would have to have to been done? I don't think he will take it to a dealer to be checked, I can maybe hear it run over the phone. Are the 110's more prone to issues than the 103? I guess I'll plan on openeing up the cam chest asap and start there.

Title states clean. Looks to be in great condition for the miles, obviously someone took care of her.

JCZ:
I agree with your strategy. In addition to the factory rebuilt motor I would also consider a tranny, compensator and clutch pack as well as those bearings. That way you would have essentially a new 2009 at market price.

I’m thinking around $10k would work.

Best regards

Jerry

The three that I currently have were bought as used CVO's, the mileage does not scare me that much (got a friend with 160K on a 2008) but it does of course affect the price.  The problem for me would be the distance, if I could see it, hear it, ride it that is one thing.

The dealer doing the test helps but that is really only part of the equation.

The price does not seem terrible, but you need to ask yourself if this is really a good deal, why hasn't somebody in TX bought it?

I would Not buy it unless it's pristine and you are ok with putting a new motor in it.
