I can not find a good place to install the GPS (do not care for the looks or the exposed wire of the handlebar mount)and really only need it on fairly rare occasion. Does anyone know if the suction cup that comes with the unit will securely attach to the inside of the windscreen?

If you want to keep the GPS do not use the suction cup.

On a bike, I would not suggest the windshield mount used for a car.

If you do not want something permanently mounted to the bike, your options are limited. A RAM mount is probably the easiest to take on and off. A Techmount would be second easiest. With either of those, you will have a power wire showing when mounted on the bar. And if you want it to talk through the stereo, you'll have a wire running to the AUX port on the radio.

The HD handlebar mount is one of the cleaner looks on a RG, with the wires run internnally to the bars, but you will have the cradle there all the time.

I was told that you could not run the wires on the handlebar mount thru the bars? I have the Wild 1 502's. can the unit be "locked in place" somehow so it does not need to be removed (so the ugly bracket is left behind)? Thanks for the info

Harley runs the wires thru the bars on the handlebar mounts on the CVO bikes, pretty slick. The Ram mounts look very "adapter kit" when installed, nothing sleek or slick about them, they just suck in looks. May work O.K and the Iron Aces one mounts it to far forward to be really useful while riding. Harley Chrome handlebar clamp replacement mount is the best looking and useful. I did send all the mount parts off and have them chromed but with the swivel you can at least angle it toward you. IMHO.

Whoever told you that is FOS...the 2011 CVO Road Glide Ultra came stock with the chrome handlebar mount, and it is wired internal to the bars, and it talks through the radio via the NIM. When you remove the GPS for whatever reason (to keep it from getting stolen when you go in somewhere where you can't watch the bike), you stick the little cover on to protect the gold pin connections...to me, it doesn't look that bad with it off, but that's just me. The benefits of GPS far outweigh the negatives, at least for me. You don't even have heated grips on your bike (from the factory, at least), so it would be a piece of cake to fish the wire into the left bar. Even with the heated grips, it's not that big a deal on the left bar.

The GPS has to be a Road Tech 660 or 665 from Harley if you want the NIM to work, the NIM will not work with any other GPS such as the Garmin Zumo 660 or 665 series.
Also the NIM will only give you turn prompts automatically interupting the radio. If you want to listen to MP3 songs on the GPS or hear a phone call (or XM radio, traffic & weather alerts if you have a 665 model) you must route the audio output to the Auxiliary Input on the radio. The radio must then be in the AUX mode.

To talk on the cell phone via the GPS Bluetooth to cell phone connection using the helmet microphone you will need an H-D Bomm (www.hdbomm.com)

or equivalent interface.

I don't know of a way to lock it with the current cradle design. The older style units had a small torx screw on top to "lock" it in, but no longer. That kept honest folk from being tempted. If I'm worried about it getting stolen, I just pull it off and stick in the tourpak or saddlebag.

Just a thought I am considering cutting the release button of so you need the end of a key to push the button that would make it harder for some one to steel it. You can also buy a locking knob for the clamp.

I'd ace that strategy. All you have to do is grab both sides of the Zumo, and yank it hard to rip the entire mount from the fairing, so why risk losing the Zumo and destroying the inner, and wiring? Tourtech makes a cage that might tend to discourage a casual thief, but the same fact applies, they'll just rip it right out of the inner and destroy everything.

The reality is, the only safe way to prevent thief and collateral damage is to remove it anytime you leave close proximity.

I have seen bikes where the entire mount was ripped off the bike. Even a 550 that was mounted on the gas cover (the 550 has a security screw), the thief ripped not only the entire GPS and mount off he tore the gas cover off also. The best deterant is to just remove the unit from view, it is hard to steal what you can not see. 30 seconds to remove and store it will result in a savings to you of around $600.00. 30 seconds to a thief who believes your property belongs to them will result in a net profit to them of around $200.00.

+ 1 on that. Out of sight, out of mind (and temptation). I just keep the little cover in the left lower glove box on my RG and throw the Zumo in the TP. I don't do that every time I leave the bike, like at gas stations, but if I go into a restaurant, etc., I'll pull it off if I'm not going to be sitting in plain view of my bike, which I typically try and do, no matter where I am or what I'm doing.

Does anyone have a picture of the charging wires going into the bar? My dealer wants to help me install it that way but has never done it before but says that if they can get a pic of it done, they can do it. any help?

I can show you a photo (not right now though) of it, but it's not really going to show the dealer anything unless I take the mount off the bar, and I don't want to do that just to get a photo. If you will have your dealer look up the 2011 FLTRUSE GPS mount, it will show the parts needed to do the install, including the NIM (navigation interface module) IF you get the Roadtech 660/665 and NOT the Garmin 660/665...The NIM only works with the Roadtech versions. The Garmin versions will work, but the only way to get audible directions is to run a stereo patch cable to the AUX input on the front of the radio (there is a way to have a AUX input on the back of the radio too, but it requires pulling the radio and doing a small modification) and have the radio set to AUX when you want to hear the prompts. With the NIM and the Roadtech, the prompts override the radio, no matter if it's on XM, AM, FM, CD, or Ipod.

The exploded diagram and parts list are in the Suplemental Parts Manual for the 2011 FLTRUSE...also shown in the Supplemental Service Manual. The cable harness from the cradle must come from Garmin, according to the manuals. If they can't figure it out, I can scan the manual pages, but it will be tomorrow before I can get to it.

Before you go any further, you should probably decide: Do you want the GPS to give voice prompts through the radio, regardless of source; Do you care about/want XM radio, or XM radio PLUS weather radar. Those two things will determine what GPS to purchase, the 660 or the 665. You can have XM radio either way, but with the Roadtech 660, you'll have to purchase the HD HK XM module that piggybacks onto the head unit, OR you can get the Roadtech 665, but you'll have to figure out how to mount the XM antenna, and it won't be pretty. The cleanest install if you want radio interruption is: Handlebar mount kit for the 2011 SERGU, NIM module, and Roadtech 660. If you want XM too, the cleanest way is with the HD XM module.

I am not sure of your configuration that you are looking for, but. Here is what I am using; this is a chrome HD mount for a Zumo 665, but I don't have a 665. I looked at the display in the shop and thought that the bolt pattern for the 665 was the same as the 450, it turned out to be a match. I liked the mount, it where it placed the Zumo on the bike just where I needed it, as I did not want to drill my dash to mount it. I had a ram mount but it didn't look like it was part of the machine.

Handlebar Chrome Mount Part # 76000191

This mount will require that you cut a hole in the bars for the wiring harness. Be careful when you fish the wires through the bars not to break any of the connections, especially the external microphone port, which is very small and easy to break if you pull on it. The hockey size XM Radio puck that you will get if you go with the 665 will fit on top of the radio out of sight.

thank you so much for the pics. I really appreciate you doing that! definately above and beyond! I think we are going to take out the voltage meter and install on the fairing in its place.
