What is the latest rain gear recommendation?
« on: July 01, 2013, 05:54:30 AM »

Planning a couple of trips for me and my wife over the next month or so.  Looking to get some rain gear for both of us.  I'm not looking for something that is good I cold weather, want something of good quality, good heat shields on the legs and packs small.  Any recommendations?  Thanks.

I have several friends who swear by Frogg Toggs. My wife borrowed a spare pair on a girls' ride and they kept her totally dry coming back from Robbinsville, NC a few weeks ago.

I might get a set soon.

Frogg Toggs are ok for light sprinkles.  For all day riding in heavy rain, you'll be wet and miserable in them.  Harley's Hi-Viz suit has worked very well for me in the past, but I've moved to actual riding gear.  If I'm riding in low visibility, low traction weather, I want something that's going to protect me if I end up getting separated from the bike.  I use Aerostich AD1 overpants and I have a bunch of different jackets that I cycle between based on the temperature.

My wife and I both use the Harley High Vis rain suits that fold up in a bag.  They work pretty good, and have rode in some pretty heavy down pours, traffic on the interstate at 30 mph.  Bought them big enough I can wear a jacket or chaps under them when needed

Have the HD FXRG Gortex jacket and pants. Terribly expensive but I found it for half off so it was just expensive. Bulletproof gear, always keeps me dry. Use the FXRG boots as well, great boot!

I can attest to the waterproofness of both the FXRG jacket and the Aerostich Darien light (similar to the AD1) pants. Not cheap but dry.  Otherwise the HD raingear is all pretty good.

Frogg Togs melt very easily and are only good for a short while before they soak, speed accelerates this occurance. HD Gortex is wonderful but so expensive. But any of the HD stuff will keep you dry.

+1 on the FroggToggs.  Bottom line is unless you are in Seattle they work fine.  You can also get MC specific sets that have liners inside the pant leg to prevent melting (won't help on high true duals/crossovers).  But they pack small and work.  There are better sets out there, but they are the best balance of packability, price, and function.  They are also good in HOT conditions.  I have a full HD suit, but it's SO DAMN HOT it's only good for cold weather riding.

Just my 2cents!

Get the motorcycle specific Frogg Toggs and you'll be happy, especially in heat.  Mine keep me dry and cool...   :2vrolijk_21:

According to all those rain suits that Motorcycle Consumer News has tested for a number of years is still one of the more affordable rain suits, the Tour Master Elite II.  Lightweight (folds up real small....takes hardly any space), nomax on both legs so the exhaust doesn't bother it, web lined on the inside to allow it to breath and keep it from sticking to your other clothes, well vented, etc.  You can also go to the bathroom without removing the whole dam thing. :2vrolijk_21:

I've carried a Frogg Toggs top and better lowers with suspenders for quite some time.  Didn't know there was a bike specific set of Frogg Toggs lowers.  Something better about them to keep them from melting so easily?

Yep - An outer liner of some sort on the inside right leg.  For a bit of added "melt protection" I've added a couple straps to the right leg like bicyclist use to keep long pants out of the bike chain.  I purchased the suit at a local Cabala's store.   :2vrolijk_21:

The Best raingear is the one you always pack but never use. But if you don't bring it you get wet. Just don't buy the kind that blows up like a baloon on you going down the road.

I've been using a pair of bib type pants for years that are actually made for snow skiing. They are Gore-Tex (or the equivalent breathable/waterproof material), have suspenders, and because they are ski related, have a tougher fabric on the lower inside portion of the pants legs to stop abrasion/wear from ski boots.  I've had them for well over 10 years and have worn them skiing, riding, fishing, and camping.  Waterproof zippers that go all the way up the outside seam for ease of putting on/taking off. Arc'teryx is the brand.  They are not cheap, however.  I also have their jacket shell, but it is impractical for a motorcycle due to the hood, so I purchased a HD Pack Lite Gore Tex jacket I found on sale and it has served me well.

Whatever you buy, just make sure it's breathable fabric similar to Gore Tex or you might as well just ride without in hot weather, 'cause you'll sweat so much you'll get wet from the inside out.  Coated fabric is like being in a Sauna.

Have heard great things bout this stuff. Went to the site and was shocked at the prices.....cheaper than most. Can anyone give some more real life experience? I got some money I ain't even spent yet. :apple:

I have the gore-tex lightweight jacket and pants.  Have only ridden twice in a downpour but the suit was absolutely waterproof and kept you warm.  Rode in Maggie Valley in warm, light rain.  The suit does not make you too hot.  Very compact when stored.  It's the only rain suit I have used so I can compare to others but it has worked very well for me.

I haven't personally used them, but I have never heard a bad word spoken about any of the Tourmaster gear.  I would not hesitate to purchase those Sentinel pieces.  And that is a really good price on that gear, probably because it is not branded with Gore Tex...most high end outdoor companies have come out with their own version of Gore Tex and it works the same way.

I was looking pretty hard at the Tourmaster gear, but are more negative product reviews than I would like to see with them.

I had a set of Frogg Toggs, used them one time then threw them away. They may be better now but that set came apart at the seams from the wind even at low speed. Needless to say I was cold, wet, and disappointed with still a long way to go before I could dry out. I now pack the HD Hi-Viz set, worked great the one time I used it. Just remember to let whichever set you decide on dry out, or throw it in the clothes dryer, before you pack it away again; any of them can and will mildew and get funky if you pack them away wet, even if they are barely damp.

This picture shows you the suit I bought at my local Harley store.  I just rode in 500 miles of pouring rain and I couldn't be happier with this product.  He kept me dry, warm and has a hood in the collar that I put under my helmet to keep water from rolling down my back.  There was no sweating in this suit. Best money I ever spent.  :2vrolijk_21:

Yep that is sure looks like the same suite my wife and I have.  I have spent more than one 400 t0 500 mile day in the rain in that suite.

I have to say just seeing the HD sticker in the back window of the tow truck would make me feel like a little better about having to be towed. At least better than the last one I got, a beat up old Ford Aerostar van and trailer that barely made it to my house.  :huepfenlol2:

This guy was really good!  He got to us when he said he would, loaded the MC and strapped it within 30 mins and once we got to the dealer he only required a signature.  Offered to drop Renay at the hotel since he was driving by it on his way home if they needed to keep her MC over night.  He was a Class Act.    :2vrolijk_21:
