SE Dyna Shocks
« on: June 16, 2008, 03:10:33 AM »

Ok, I know this sounds friggin retarded, and I am not new to HD, have owned seven over the years. Well, my 07 SE Dyna owners man. says "hand adjustable rear shocks". Do any of you know the deal here, like how to adjust. Heck, I tried turning the shock by hand with no real result, except maybe the chrome cover moving. I dont see a place to use a shock spanner to adjust. Do I have to pull these sumbits off to adjust? I want to lower them or back them off some to get the bike stance as low as possible but not bottom out the shocks. Any help for Mr. Buckethead here would be appreciated.

Appreciate it in advance

I somtimes put on my thin leather gloves. Grab the upper portion of the shock cover and turn clockise to soften or counter clockwise. It might be a little stiff at first depending on the current tension. As the "cover" is tuning you will see a series of lines just above the cover near the upper mounting bolt. Make sure each side of the bike has the same number of lines showing ..... remember, it does appear that it is the cover only that is turning.

I hope this helps.

Thanks, yes this helps very much. I never thought about the shock being that easy to change.

I was at a dealership the other day and noticed that the FXDSE2 duracell on the floor has different rear shocks then mine(FXDSE2 Blue)? They are both 2008 models, mine has the ones that you can use a spanner wrench to adjust and the duracell has the ones that I think you are talking about? What's up with two different shocks on the same model  :confused5:??

Harley routinely makes modifications during the model year.  Not at all unusual.

I see you guys have 08 FXDSE's. I have one also and am having an issue loosing OIL.
I was hoping you can share your experiences with OIL consumption since you have owned
the bikes.
My story is I bought bike new. Within the first 840 miles I used 1 3/4 qts of OIL. Dealer
told me it was normal, especially within the breakin period. I wsn't convinced this was true,
other forum readers told me it was BS!! So I spoke to the dealer and said I wanted them to look
into it and see why it was loosing oil. So with 840 miles I took it in and they informed me that the
rear plug was wet with oil. They suggested it had bad oil seals in the rear cylinder. Since they were
pulling the head they stressed that the do the gasket fix. They also did the 1000 mile checkup.
Well.... I rode back home from the dealership, let it sit for 20 mins and checked the oil. It read
7X on the stick. I checked it the following morning cold and it read 6X, bear in mind I did not ride it
between the oil checks.
I took it out for the first time after the work was done and traveled 44 miles. When I returned I let it sit 20 mins and
checked it, it read 6X hot, on less than the day before. I checked it cold it read 5X.
In just 44 miles it seems I used one full X on the stick.

Your feedback will be very helpful.

I don't know what to tell you other then it is not normal...  Do you get any smoke on start up after the bike sits overnight?  I assume you're not leaving any puddles underneath...

My first thought is a big part of your problem is who's been working on it and giving you your info. Get your bike to someone who knows these bikes and get to the bottom of this. This chit ain't rocket science, but the unknowledgeable can be told anything. Have your bike worked on by someone knowledgeable that you can TRUST! ;)

No leaks at all on the bike. Just loosing oil while riding.
Dealer wants to take it back in to look into it further. As I said they all ready did a leak down and replaced the valve seals.

What is this other issue with these bike I am hearing... issues with the cranks scissoring?
