Title: What makes you stay where you live?
Post by: kb on January 12, 2009, 06:35:33 PM
Here in RI as a cold winter night approaches I was wondering WTF keeps me here? I hate the cold, the snow and winter in general. On the bright side from April till Nov. I RIDE, fish, RIDE , swim, Ride, walk and try to enjoy the outdoors every minute that I am able to. There is a lot of beautiful landscape, the Atlantic ocean and a variety of good places to eat and just have FUN. Of coerce my family & dear friends. How many of you feel the same about where you live. KB

i have enjoyed the adventures on my SERK exploring lots of other states, but home is home

To me, "home" is New York but I've lived in California for the past 18 years and have no intention of leaving any time soon.  Cali has the weather, culture, restaurants, variety of terrain (skiing, hiking, beach, forests, deserts, etc), great year-round riding, and it's where most of my friends are.  Yeah it's expensive, but you get what you pay for...

My family and friends! I gave up all of that to move down here 38 years ago because my lovely wife wanted to be near her parents. Her mother wasn't well. This is home including family and friends and not going to give that up again!

Opportunity, low taxes brought me 20+ years ago, got used to the nice weather, great fishing and hunting..
Not so much hunting left anymore, taxes are getting high and the fishing still is great...year round riding but the roads are boring.  A travelin jones is setting in but I will keep a place down here for November through March for sure

Home is where the USMC sends me...get some latitude, but not much.  I am not a huge fan of Jacksonville, NC, just is the east coast Mecca of the Marines.

When I am done with the gun club - Florida/home here I come -with maybe a house in the mountains near Luray also.

Interesting that somebody should post this.  I have spent the last 2 months bitchin' about the weather and declaring my desire to move out of here.  However, like most people, this is where i grew up.  I have all of my close family here.  I have an ex-wife with 2 kids.  I could care less about the ex, but the kids I dearly love.  My wife and I have good jobs (for now) and we built a new home 3 years ago.  My father is not well and is awaiting a lung transplant (need an average size male lung from someone with A- blood type if anybody's got one they would give up).  I help his wife take care of him and his home.

With all that said, when the kids get bigger and dad gets well, I'm going to think about making a move.  The communist republic of Illinois is not a cheap place to live and my wife and I can both take our careers to a new level somewhere else.  So, at some point, starting in about 5-8 years, I am lookin' for paradise on earth.  Somewhere I can ride all year, make a decent living and live happily ever after.

Been in Georgia now for 37 of my 55 years.  Got stationed here in '72.  And actually it was motorcycle riding back then that was a big part of my staying when discharged in '74 (it was really a mature decision).  I could ride year round here but not in Illinois where I was born and raised.  However, now in addition to riding, it's all about roots.  Over the years, a lot my family moved here, and a lot of my wife's family (she was born and raised in Boston), and now our kids are here (2 out of the house and 1 to go).  I have to also say that I absolutely love my job (professor at UGA) -- I know that's unheard of in a lot of cases.  It's also relatively inexpensive to live in Georgia.  And did I mention that you can ride year round.  In 3 hours we can be in the mountains, and in about 5 we can either be on the Gulf coast or the Atlantic.

Long answer but there you've got it -- Bikin' Bob

New Jersey is the "Gestapo State".  If they don't tax you to death they create a law to hold you down.

I have planned on leaving NJ since I was in high school.  Some family crisis has always come up and stopped me.  Now in my 50's with most of the family passed on,  I am looking once again to make my escape.
I Always wanted to live somewhere out west.  Now I almost don't care as long as it's not here.  Less expensive would be nice so I don't have to work until I'm 100.

Who know's maybe this will be the year I don't return from Sturgis, at least till it snows.

Well, I'm Texas born.  Dad & Mom were from Oklahoma and moved back when I was a little guy.  I have lots of deep roots here now.  Most of my family, including two beautiful granddaughters, live within a few miles.

I know that So California and Florida have the great weather and NYC has all the attractions.... problem with all this is that lots of other folks know this too.  I don't mind visiting all these places, but much too crowded for me.

I can ride an hour east and be in the twisties and hills of SE Oklahoma.  I have several great fishing lakes with in a few miles of the house.  I don't care much for cold weather, but we get our share of warm days through the winter... enough to get to take a ride every week or so until summer-time comes around.

Like others have said, "Home is Home".  Even if I moved back to Texas, I would probably still call Oklahoma home  ;)

Moved to Chicago 3 years ago for work and to get closer to family.  Moved here from Virginia and I miss the riding and weather there.  Home will always be Nebraska as that is where I grew up.
Funny that you asked the question...I just told my wife when the kids are out of the house the next place we live I will be able to do Christmas shopping on the Harley...if there is salt on the roads it better be from the ocean.

Bottom line is make the best out of it... no matter where you live.

Besides FAMILY, it's the BAY AREA! We have just about everything within 600 miles of us. The ocean (Pacific),  the most beautiful lake in the country (Lake Tahoe), Mountains (The Sierras), Valleys (Death Valley), National Parks (Yosemite), Wine Country (Napa), Glitz & Glamour (Hollywood), Gambling (Las Vegas, Reno & Lake Tahoe) and San Francisco itself! For the most part the weather is fair and we have THOUSANDS of miles of roads to ride. What else is there (except maybe a lower cost of living!)?...

I now live in Middle TN, but grew up on the south side of Chicago. Military sent me to many far off exotic places, at night and back home in the morning, so I have seen alot. My wife is from Manchester England and has lived in Israel, Greece, Canada, when she became a US citizen she lived in San Diego. So each of us has a bit of gypsy in us. We like Tennessee for all that it offers, But since we have NO KIDS :pineapple:, we said that once the last dog is gone who knows what we might do, Australia sounds good, so does Portugal.

Right now, the housing market is probably about the only thing keeping me here.  I've been watching my neighbors with the signs going up and the signs coming back down many months later, and none of them have moved.  Nobody is able to sell.  I would love to get out of PA and move somewhere warm so I can ride year round.

This ones easy.  I love the change of seasons.  Summer and Fall are spectacular.  Where ever I go I know someone.  I have the best neighbors, best grocery stores, best beer store.  For large city, international culture, Toronto is less than 2 hrs away.  My house has maintained all of it's value in the last year (at least that's what the assessor tells me).  Cost of living is low (but taxes are high).  Within an hour or so from home there are areas of such wilderness cell phones don't work but I can go to an off Broadway play with a 20 minute drive (I'm going to opening night of Rent tonight).  I'm close to Niagara Falls, Lake Erie (world class Walleye and Bass fishing), and Lake Ontario (world class Salmon and Steelhead fishing as well one of the best kept secrets in the world, the 1,000 Islands).  The weather is so crazy I could go skiing and golfing in the same week.  I don't have to worry about tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, wild fires, or mud slides.  Blizzards are actually fun.  We build a fire have some beer and cook some comfort food.  The neighborhood restaurants and all fantastic and and lastly, I have a good job.

Well, it's -17 as I write this so little more needs to be said. The bike is safely up on a jack and under cover so I'm not piling on the extra miles for 5 months out of the year. I get to sit around and think of new ways to spend money on improvements so when it comes out in the spring, it will be just like I want it (right).

Actually, my wife and I moved back to the cities 17 years ago after spending 5 years in San Diego, 4 years in Pierre, SD, and 2 years in Sioux Falls, SD. The twin cities is an outstanding place to live, work and play. We've got lakes, trees, arts, fishing, hunting, great riding (motorcycles and snowmobiles) and weather. Boy have we got weather. Thunderstorms, tornadoes (6 miles from our house this year) blizzards, scorching heat and this week's little gift of sub-zero temps. Actually though, my wife and I love weather. We got 3 inches of the most beautiful snow yesterday, the whole area looks like a snow globe. Got out my snow blower last night and plowed out 4 driveways (nothing like seeing someone's face when they get home and see they don't have to shovel). Took one of the dogs for a walk last night (when it was still 17 ABOVE) and he had the time of his life plowing through the drifts and snow. Winter has its advantages and spring is just around the corner.

Minneapolis has one of the greatest downtowns in the world and you can walk for miles inside in the winter and never leave the skyways. The people are friendly, it's a great place to raise a family (even if it's just 3 dogs), you can fly almost anywhere on a direct flight and now we have Al Franken as our Senator. Some things you just can't explain!

Now that we are back into riding scoots, we talk about getting a place in the sun when we retire and that may happen. Perhaps we'll just mooch off our remaining friends and relatives in warmer climates.

For now, no complaints here. We are blessed to live in a free country with unlimited opportunities!

Convenient to get anywhere, but not the greatest riding in the Metropolitan area. Everyone should get here, and spend a lil time here, at least once in their lives! Don't regret a minute of living here my whole life. But there's no way I'm retiring here too!!! ;)

My wife's family.  I would move out of here in a heart beat.  Right now, I pay high taxes, put up with worst gun laws in the country and deal with cold winters.  Wouldn't mind the winter if I could switch riding gears with hunting, but NO hunting here.  All private posted land.  It has never been home and it'll never be.  I made a commitmend to my wife and sticking with it (they can't leave for ever).

We moved to Oregon in 2004 so my wife could be closer to her side of the family. When the wife is happy, I am happy. I grew up and lived most of my life in Washington State and Oregon isn't much different than Washington so it wasn't much of a climate change although it doesn't rain as much here and the temperature is often 5-10 degrees warmer. The Oregon coast is only 1.5 hrs away to the west, the cascade mountains and central Oregon are only 1.5 hours away to the east so it doesn't take much effort to get away from the city. Life in general is good.

Like most people on this thread, I enjoy the variety of the area and being able to travel from oceanfront to mountains in a short time. variety of things to do like saltwater and freshwater fishing. The weather is not too severe and the only really bad weather we get are hurricanes. (Not as frequently as other areas.) You can pretty much ride all year.
I too have family in the area and a wife with a career that keeps us in the area.

I find it surprising that so far no one has answered the question "What makes you stay where you live?" As .......The parole board or "The ankle bracelet doesn't have much range.." :huepfenlol2:

For the last 24 years, Home is where the Army planted us.

Now that I retired from that we are looking for the next spot. Don't get me wrong, VA has a lot going for it. We have seasons, but haven't seen any snow in a long time. Then again it can be gawdawful hot in the summer, humidity is a trip. So we are looking at weather trends, fresh air, good water, and low to no state tax on retirement dollars. That last piece really narrows down the search, but keeps most of the country in play.

I like southern Ohio, cost of living is low, no taxes on retirement, 4 seasons, old friends and family are there too... then again, when we were in Nelson we became re-aquainted with the natural beauty of the PNW. So we haven't ruled out BC, Washington and Oregon, yet.

What was the question again? Oh yeah, what makes me stay where I live... that's easy, the economy and my mortgage. Once those two get a bit better, we will be from a different state.  :drink:

:orange:retired 5 years ago after having lived in California, Nebraska, Iowa, Texas, Mississippi, Texas, Missouri, and Kansas plus a few places across the water.  Yes we travel a lot,by car, plane and scooter, visiting family, friends, and places we have not seen before.  However, it all seems to boil down to where is our family now.  sons, daughters and grandkids are all here locally and see them frequently.  Yes we would like it warmer in the winter, cooler in summer (mid 70s) so we can ride more.  We also realize that when the bottom line hits it is the family to which we have ties and want to maintain those ties.  Our siblings have said a number of times go live where you want, spend your money on what you enjoy, so we are, by traveling, buying a new scoot every so often, and enjoying life.  But even with all of the traveling, etc it is still good to be home to enjoy those aspects which make a home.

ride safe and have fun.   heading to san Francisco, petaluma and other points around there this week.

Look at the cost of the median priced home in San Diego (or anywhere in Calif.) compared to all the other locations.  Maybe there is hope for a real retirement......just have to figure out where that'll be. :nixweiss:

Talon, my brother lives in Divide, Colo. and he talks about all the Californians that move out there.  He said he sees it every summer......all the moving trucks.....after one winter here half have packed up and moved back to Calif.  The second winter another 25% have moved back.  He says "they don't understand you have to bring a 4 wheel drive tractor with a blade on it, when you come. ;D

What makes you stay where you live?  Gravity, plus if I moved the "home" setting on my GPS would have to be changed.

or....

My wife & I are both Texas natives - have lived in Florida since 1994.  First couple of years we talked about moving back but as the years roll by, Florida seems more like home.  Weather is good - can ride 12 months a year.  Temps in North Florida can get cold at night - will be 18 later this week - but the day time highs even in "winter" are usually in the 50's or 60's.  No state income tax, sales taxes not that high, and the ocean is less than an hour away.  If global warming occurs, the ocean will be even closer.......

The neighborhood restaurants and all fantastic and and lastly, I have a good job.

not to mention,,,,  it is possible in western New York, to experience all four seasons in one day.   :huepfenlol2:

like you said,  we may get snow.  but it melts.  we don't have to go looking for our belongings (or our house) miles away.

Actual by-god native Floridian born and raised in Palm Beach County. Family, job, freinds, and weather are about the only things keeping me here. Evrything else I loved is gone (low taxes, less people, frog hunting, air boating, off road riding, and a few things I can't mention).

What makes you stay where you live?

That would be inertia.   My current location is the fourth I've had due to my job, and even though I'm now retired I just can't pull the trigger on packing up and moving again.  Plus, this is the closest we've lived to what's left of the wife's family since we were married, and she isn't too keen on moving right now.  I keep telling myself that once I get some health issues taken care of I'm going to get serious about finding a better place to live, but I think I'm just fooling myself.  It will happen when and if momma wants it to happen, and she doesn't seem to hate this climate as much as I do.

I love the weather in San Diego and have become very close with Beagle and his family, but the family place on the lake in Maine tugs at the heartstrings like nothing else in my life. It is where my roots are and of course I have more family members in Maine than I can count, lots of friends and some of my old MMMC Bros still, so I'm bi-coastal until I can't afford it anymore I guess. "Home is where the Army sends you."

I was born in Alabama.  Dad got drafted.  Moved like crazy.  Finally settled just north of Columbus, GA not far from Ft. Benning.  Renea was born in Tennessee.  Her Dad got drafted.  Moved like crazy. Finally settled in Clarksville, TN...........but lived near us during a posting at Ft. Benning.  Renea and I used to go to the same roller skating rink when we were kids.  There's alot of familiarity there..........even though we think we never really met until 1996.  FF

Ended up joining the Army myself.  Went to Germany.  Came back to Ft. Benning.........then to Korea, then to Ft. Campbell, then to Korea, then to Ft. Campbell, then to Korea, then to Ft. Campbell, then to Ft. Rucker, Alabama where I retired.  Spent 9 months there after I retired before moving to north Alabama.

What makes Renea and I stay here?  Well, first, we like it here............we're both Army brats, so the concept of calling one place "home" exists only in the context of the first sentence I wrote in this post.  Second, we're close to all of our extended family.  Third.........with my education and skill set........I'm in the perfect place when it comes to employment.

And it all just "happened."  Pretty Kewl..............I think.   :2vrolijk_21:

I live where I live, because that is where I chose to move to when I retired from the Navy.

I grew up in MI, a very beautiful state, but very tax heavy and costly.  I spent most my Navy days on the East coast, 1 year in Boston, then 3 in Toms River NJ, then 1 in Norfolk VA, then 8 in Chareston SC, then 1 in Kings bay GA then the last 6 in Jacksonville FL.  SC was the only duty station I really liked the area.  Actually considered moving back when I retired.

I chose East TN for many reasons,  Wife and I both loved the area and when we were in SC and FL to go visit either of our families we had to go thru east TN.  So we decided thats where we would move to.  We loved the Smoky Mountains, the lakes, the rivers, the National forests and especially the senic roads.  With my job I can live any where I want in the Continental 48.

TN is not too hot in the summer like FL, not to cold in the winter like MI.  Even in the winter there are a few nice days you can ride each month.

TN has a low cost of living, no income tax, and low property tax.

Born in North Texas hill country and have lived my life here with exception of short vacation in Viet Nam. Our 27 acres in the country with 5 acre lake has been home for 40 years. Great riding, wonderful place for rasing our kids and now grandkids. My shop is here at home. Two gardens, water wells and 2000 undeveloped acres joining our land. We have 16 rescue cats, 2 rescue dogs and feed about 50 wild ducks, deer and other critters. Will also feed pasing through CVO bikers. Here is a pic of our land from the air.

Snakes are for belts, boots and hatbands and if you've got Asian blood in you, for eating.

Texas gets hot and a swim after a long day in the saddle feels sweeeeeeeeet, but NOT with frikkin water moccasion for company.

Lemme se here Mr Rebel. I was born and raised and lived for 44 years in the Great State of Maine. Population for the entire state just recently exceded 1,000,000 which puts it in the bottom 5 or 6 in the USA Land mass is I believe #8. People per square mile is something like 1/250 so I believe that qualifies me as a country boy. You can have your damn snakes. Like I said, they make great belts, boots and hatbands.

MG's go back deeper in the perimeter..., trip flares, a ditch and then you need some claymores and a few fighting holes, then a layer of triple strand canalizing them into lanes of fire (which you cleared first) - defense in depth

MG's only go down when they are in the wire...but then you also have the mortars (FPF - final protective fires)

Grew up in Georgia.  I always regarded snakes as "endangered species"  If I saw one, he was in danger. ;D

Jump off the floating dock at the lake and that sound you hear.......it's the snakes leaving the top of the blocks of floating styrofoam--they like to get out of the water between it and the lumber you just jumped off of.  Make a big splash and it scares them away. :nixweiss:

Living in Florida has further desensitized me.  Killed at least one a week at the house for about the first year we were here.  Sometimes in the garage.  Back out the car and 'look what was under it.' :o  I seem to have thinned out the population, though.  Don't see them as much.

For Plasmaman's place I'd deal with the snakes.  Or not--I'd still love it.

BB,

Right you are sir; belts, boots, and hatbands  :D

I've never lived in Oklahoma City (or any other large city for that matter) -- my office is in OKC, but I wouldn't want to live here.  Everyone in town lives in a neighborhood and the only ponds are "Cement Ponds".

I understand that most folks want to avoid snakes at all cost, and that's a good safe attitude to have ;)  I grew up & live out where we have ponds and creeks.  And yes, there are snakes around (the snakes help keep the frog population down).  We grew up swimming in the creeks and ponds around the house.  You are more likely to get bit by a snake walking to the pond than swimming in the pond.

Come on over to Oklahoma..... I'll hook you up with a new belt or hatband  :2vrolijk_21:

Yep, our lake is great for swimming, fishing or just sitting and have a cold one. In fact, we have 2 RV 30 amp hookup's with water available for any of you that have a camper. For just the die hard bikers, we have extra rooms and we welcome company. We are 45 miles west of Ft Worth Texas if that fits into plans. As far as snakes go, the only ones we have in any numbers are copperheads and they are bad little suckers. They seem to live in a constant pi$$ed off state of mind. We have raised 3 children here and no one has ever been bitten. Abby keeps them thinned out with the shotgun.

Not to turn this into a snake thread, but I know what you mean about copperheads.  The house I grew up in Georgia--old, no air conditioning and ill-fitting screen doors.  One summer a copperhead let himself into the living room  Dad shot him before he could get under the furniture.  I was about 7 or so.  It was months before I'd walk around the house at night.

Abby keeps them thinned out with the shotgun.

Good for her. :2vrolijk_21:  Make sure she has plenty of ammo.

We have copperheads around here.  They will bite you just because they can.  And they will chase you too!  Some of those CCI shot shells in a 45acp pistol does a nice job of dealing with them.

Beagle and I took a 100 mile ride yesterday, out to Alpine to say hi to his sister and her fiancee who were getting one of their houses ready for renters. Alpine is about 35 miles from the ocean in San Diego county and about 4,000 ft of elevation. The property was well over an acre and absolutely beautiful with a nice pool, built in jacuzzi, waterfalls in three areas around the patio, a South Seas themed bar with built in grill etc etc. We left there and rode down to Ocean Beach to South Beach Bar & Grill for the best fish taco's in the entire world and then back up the highway to where we both live about 20 miles outside of San Diego proper. The weather was low 70's and clear skies and as I was riding along, all I could think of was how fortunate I am to live here. Especially with having the place on Sebago Lake in Maine to spend my summers when it gets into the high 90's here every day.

Rub it in why don't ya! It's finally above 0 here today, but it's snowing now. I just look at my bike sitting in the livingroom and dream of an early spring. I do love it here, and my family is here, but I am getting sick of the winter. Hubby wants to move to Az or someplace where we could ride year round, but I love it in the spring when the new leaves appears on the trees, and the first ride in spring is such a joy! I've lived in many areas of the US and I'm not sure where I would like to retire. I've got a few years left for that, so will just see where life takes me.

You can buy a house and 5 acres in the Tombstone / Bisbee AZ area for under $80k. Tombstone is cool beans and it'd be perfect for a winter home. Check it out. And of course, you hang onto your Maine property in Detroit (hell remember it used to belong to my great great grandfather ?) No place on earth as pretty as Maine in the summah.

We'll not talk about the HOT summers and humidity in July and August!!

...except to say that the HOT summers and humidity are the very reason I don't live in Houston... or New Orleans... or Mobile... or anywhere in Florida.

I lived in Texas for 19 years (4 in Waco while in college and 15 in the Dallas area). After getting sunburned on an 80+ degree New Year's Day at the Cotton Bowl in 1980, I decided that Texas has two seasons -- summer and Indian summer.

I moved back to Tennessee to four the natural beauty (hills & trees which I'm sure you've read about  8)) and for the seasons... among other reasons.

Plus he's on the witness protection program and Tennessee was the only opening they had.

I'll be moving to NC, SC, or TN when my youngest finishes HS in 2010.  Don't panic, I'm bringing my guns, bikes, but leaving the Kennedys in MA+ NY.

When I retired from the Navy I looked at those three states.  NC and SC have much higher taxes than TN.  SC also has personal property tax on cars, boats, bikes and such.  Cost of living was lowest in TN.

Work and a past marriage has kept me here in the Seattle area.  There are many positives to living in the Seattle area but I grew up in Northern California so I've never liked the weather here and still don't.  My daughters live about 5 hours away in Spokane and the older I get, the less I like snow.  They are all married now with there own families.  They are in their mid 20's and very independent.

I'm in the software industry and we're going through quite a shake out now.  If I lose my job, I know it will take 12-18 months to replace my income here.  I'm single, depending on what happens I may relocate myself to a warmer (sunny) climate, as the final reason for staying could be gone.  Unemployment is good in Washington State so that will help  :orange:

We've lived in England for the past 3.5 years because that is where the Air Force needs me.  25+ years of moving all over the world and I would not change a thing.  I have ridden the beaches of Normandy and was on Omaha Beach and the American Cemetery to witness the wreath laying ceremony by WWII veterans and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates.  I've ridden the path of the 101st from Normandy to Bastogne and the "Battle of the Bulge" and into Germany stopping along the way to visit the many museums and to pay my respects at the cemeteries.   I've ridden Mt Rainier in Wash, Great Smokey Mountains in NC, Rocky Mountains, Mt Fuji in Japan and the Alps in Germany, Austria, France and Switzerland.  Those are priceless moments that I'll never forget.

Thanks to the Air Force I have been given opportunities to do and see things that never would of happened if I stayed in the small NC town I grew up in.  We are coming the the end of a great AF career so our next move will be our last one, we looking to go to Arizona, Utah or New Mexico and put many more miles on bike.

yo, pave, thats a long time in the AF I only lasted 5 yrs. and just this morning there was a special on TV about the Iranian hostage crisis. today is the anniversary of their release. in the late 70's 6 from my unit died from a thwarted rescue attempt. Hadn't thought of it much till today. My wife yelled out " hide the guns and whiskey".
The places you have ridden are awesome.

After I retired from the US Army in 1989 we returned to Alaska and we're still here.  The hunting, fishing, no state income tax, no sales tax, no property tax where we live, annual state dividend check, free hunting/fishing/trapping license after age 60 (10 months), live on a private air strip, the majestic views.  I could go on and on but you can begin to get an idea of why we live here.  Having said that we are beginning to look at downsizing and relocating to a warmer climate.  Seriously considering Whidbey Island, WA, but not sure we can afford to live there.  When the time comes we'll hook up the Airstream and just go looking.  We won't be in any hurry, just take our time to find the right place.  In the meantime though, there's no place like AK.

What makes me stay is the wife & family.  Couldn't pry the wife out of here with a crowbar especially since we now have grandkids...can't really blame her as they are oh so special.   I'd love to be somewhere south for the better riding weather...just not sure where that would be without running into so many people having the same idea.  Out here in the plains states we don't have the urban problems that many people have to put up with every day...so that's a plus.   I like having the "elbow room" to get away.   The hunting & fishing is good.  The winters are seemingly long and can be brutal at times...that's why some of us have snowmobiles.  The only thing to slow down the winter wind is South Dakota and North Dakota and I might remind my brothers from the north that they aren't doing a very good job containing said wind.  ;)   In the summer it's the exact opposite...only we blame Kansas & Oklahoma for that.  ;)  Our roads rank among the top in the nation and our taxes keep up a pretty good pace too.  That may be why we have a budget surplus unlike most states this year.  We don't have majestic mountains or ocean beaches for viewing as it is basically flat out here...you could drop a nickel and it could land on edge.  But, to ride through the sandhills in the spring when the native grasses are shooting up & wildflowers are in bloom and you are the only motorized vehicle out there for many miles...man, that is a sight to take in.  Otherwise, living here gives us a good excuse to travel/vacation to somewhere else.

My family-two daughters.
Oh yeah,I have a job here!
Here is Nothern NJ and although I hate the winter months, the other three seasons are really cool to go through.
We're congested as hell here but I guess we're spoiled rotten by all of the conveniences and opportunities in the NYC metropolitan area. Within an hour you can leave the city life behind and get some great riding in Pa and New England when the time allows.
As long as I can afford to live here I will and still visit the fantastic places that other membersof this forum call home. :coolblue:

I hate winter. I love money so work drives my home. No matter where you move your home never changes.  Later,Q

I retired from the Air Force in 2004. I had two years from that date to be moved anywhere in the country, no charge. Not sure why we stayed here. My wife hates this place and she lets me know everyday, no family here , my kids are Young enough to move without putting up much of a fight and the weather sucks. Guess it was easier to stay settled in than uproot everything. As far as Canadian cities this is probably on of the best for the time being. Good health care, schools, low crime and taxes. Sure would like to be somewhere warmer though. Maybe when the kids have moved out I'll move to Mexico.
