Title: CVOHARLEY Top 10 List of favourite roads to ride
Post by: Grizzly on January 11, 2014, 04:58:34 PM
We would like to create a CVOHARLEY Top 10 List from each State & Province of your favourite roads to ride...

Please respond with just your #1 favourite road to ride from your State or Province

Once we have enough submissions, we'll create a Top 10 List for each State & Province for your riding pleasure.

Hopefully we will receive submissions from every State & Province, and even some from the UK, Europe, Australia and more!

Thanks for your input.

PS - I'll start things off with the first reply of my #1 favourite road to ride in my Province...

I'll play.

My favorite Ohio road is SR 93 from Beach City clear down to US 33.

Are there more challenging roads in Ohio? Sure. But this one is my favorite for many reasons.

The 10 miles of Harper's Ferry Road between Sharpsburg and the river is - when there's no traffic and no crud in the corners - one of the most entertaining roads I've ever ridden.  It's not a wide-open-throttle sweeper-fest like the MDH or the CS, rather it's an insanely technical back-and-forth, up-and-down ride that demands proper corner entry, brake usage, and gear selection.

There are a ton of driveways on it, there's often buses loaded with people there for tubing on the river, and there's no passing zones for when you inevitably get caught behind slow traffic......But catch it in the early afternoon on a weekday when there's no one around and there's no sand and gravel in the corners......It's just freaking magical.

FWIW, there are a ton of fantastic roads around here, many of them longer or more scenic, many with far less traffic and other obstacles, but whenever I have out of state riders visiting, Harper's Ferry Road is the first place we go.

Since I live in 2 places equally, I get 2 votes. :)

Colorado -- 550 from Durango to Ridgway through Silverton and Ouray.  Molas, Coal Bank & Red Mountain Passes.

California -- Highway 1 (with some 101) from Capo Beach all the Oregon border.

SJ Ron :)

P.S. in the top 15 list, Highway 58 between Santa Margarita and McKittrick does NOT pass over the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range.

The Niagara Parkway  :2vrolijk_21:  It runs between Fort Erie and Niagara on the lake, winding along the Canadian side of the  Niagara River for 50 Km.  At one point you are no more than 60 yards away from Niagara Falls.  It is not as challenging as the Twisties in NC but it sure is a purdy road  :)

Hwy 61 from Duluth to the Canadian border. Lake Superior got that name for a reason. If you wanna make it a 10+ ride, do it during the fall when the leaves are at peak color. Rode this 2 years ago about a week or two past peak. Still stunning!

Since I'm the first from MS, I guess I'll add the Natchez Trace Parkway from Natchez to Nashville. Doesn't have any switchbacks, but it's scenic and has some interesting stops along the way. Beware if you haven't traveled on this road, there are no gas stations along the Trace, you have to exit off at some town and then get back on it to continue.

Also beware the park rangers who are anal about speeders.

If you enjoy scenic rides with lots of points of interest (as I do) the Natchez Trace is a wonderful experience.

One of our favorites also! We had a pair of Bald Eagles keeping us company in Salmon River Canyon on one of our pit stops along the River, and spent the night in Salmon, on our way to Flathead Lake and Glacier.

After the US 1 route to the Keys in Florida (best), Hwy. 98 running west of Medart to Mexico Beach, FL.  A very scenic route, no twisites, Gulf of Mexico on 1 side, forest mostly on the other.  Take the side trip from Eastpoint over the bridge to St. George Island for a cold beverage and/or stop for a refreshing libation at the Gibson Inn on their rocking chair porch in Appalachicola (great raw oysters!).

If you have time, take the Hwy. 30-A side trip to Indian Pass & eat oysters at the raw bar there.

Just one?? Just one??

I guess for beauty and curves I would have to choose Hwy 1 from Morro Bay, Calif up to the end of it in Northern Calif - bad thing is part of the ride you go through San Francisco.

(and a very close 2nd would be -- not as pretty scenery but knarly corners Hwy 49 from Bear Valley, California to Coulterville, California  -- also know as the Little Dragon)

Okay, the list is growing and we've got some great roads listed.

However, we're still waiting to hear from members in...

AK, DE, HI, IL, KS, KY, LA, ME, MA, MI, NE, NV, NJ, NM, NY, ND, OK, OR, PA, RI, VT, WV and WI  in the U.S.

as well as...

MB, NB, NL, NS, NU, PE, QC, SK and YT  in Canada

I know all these areas have great riding roads and I could fill in the blanks on most of them myself with my own personal favourites, but really want to hear from the local riders who ride in their home State or Province all the time... You know all the best routes!

Let the good times roll with a little fun of remembering past journeys as we northerners continue to battle the worst winter in decades!

Keep 'em coming!

I agree with most of the posts on their respective states having ridden many of them.

Some Kansas highways that I really like are US 177 from Cassoday to Council Grove on up to Ks 4 and Ks 99 to Alma.

Up and down and left and right through the open prairie Flint Hills with few trees to interrupt the view.

Another is Ks 5 from Leavenworth to Kansas city Ks. Most of you wouldn't believe the changes in contour from the perceived flats in Kansas.

Anywhere I ride I love to top another hill and think "What a great big beautiful country we live in."

GRR is awesome. Haven't run that side at least north anyway. I have run from McGregor, IA over to Praire Du Chien and back down to Galena and Savannah, IL. Sweet ride!
