When should you buy the extended warranty?
« on: April 07, 2008, 12:24:06 PM »

When I bought my new bike I bought the so called 5 year extended warranty.  It cost $1,700.  I wanted a warranty that went beyond the original 2 yr. warranty, but all I was offered was a warranty that overlapped the original warranty.  Thus I really have a 3 yr. extension as far as I can see.  I know there are a few bells and whistles during the first two years, but who needs 'em?
Yesterday I was told by a HD mechanic friend of mine in another state, that I should have waited until my 2 yr. warranty was about to expire, then buy it.  Anybody know what's really going on with these things?   :nixweiss:

If you bought the same product you now have it would be the same.  The only thing you'd have gained is the comfort to not buy it at all if your bike didn't show any problems.

The 5 year warranty you have always begins from the in service date of the bike, although you can buy it as long as the bike has some remaining factory warranty time left as I understand it.

One other thing you risk by waiting is you may pay more. As economy/inflation changes the price may change, along w/there is a discount for purchasing it within a certain amount of days/mileage the bike is brand new.

Was going to add that but I wasn't sure of the Harley situation with the dealers.  I know on the cars, the cost to the dealer goes up as time and mileage increase from new.

Also, most folks don't buy after the delivery.  If you are getting it, it's best to bite the bullet and just do it at the time of delivery IMO.

I have it on most of my toys..........why not :nixweiss:

I remember when I purchased mine the dealer told me there was a certain time/mileage to buy the ESP after purchasing the bike to receive a discount. I'm thinking it was 30 days/1000 miles for a savings of $100 +/-.

I think that's a motivator tactic as they know if you don't you won't but at least it's a discount.

Let's see, mark it up a hundred, give a 30 day hundred dollar discount.......mmmm, nah they'd never do that :huepfenlol2:

Add to that they know the $100 will never make it out the store they are going to get it anyway. :-\

When you purchased the 5 year extended warranty, you actually got a total of 7 years, 5 plus the standard 2 year. That is provided, you spent the $1600.00. You also had 90 days after picking up you bike to purchase
the extended warranty with no additional cost. If you wait till the standard factory warranty is up, you then
have to pay an additional $150.00. At that time, you MUST purchase it before your standard warranty runs
out or your SOL! I just purchased mine, on my 2006 SEUC, and went thru all the BS. By the way, for anyone
who wants to purchase it, shop around you can get DISCOUNTS, I did.

I'm going through this now.  You have 60 days or 2000 miles to get the extended warranty at the "new" price, after that it goes up.  Call Jenni, she has the best price.

You know it's a slow day when I'm sitting here looking in my wallet and ordering plush for the crane machines.

No I didn't get 7 yrs. total.  I confirmed it with the service manager.  I was also told it overlapped my original warranty.  I have 5 yrs. TOTAL, and I paid $1,700.
