New CVO Road Glide ?
« on: November 11, 2007, 11:11:34 PM »

I went to Pomona yesterday cleverly disguised as a consumer who likes to buy stuff when, while getting my run pin, I saw this black winging thing on a chopped tour pack.

...Then I asked him if he really was Willie G. and boy was I surprised, YUP it was him. Then I asked him if he was planning a new CVO Road Glide in the future, and he said NOPE. Willie said the CVO group only produces bikes the consumer demands. But look at this bike, it was parked at the HOG booth where he and his son were hanging out. They did look it over real well and liked it a lot. So now I guess its up to us. If the dealers don't create a demand by asking for them it probably won't get done.  Doc

"Build it , they wil Come"

Very interesting report, grandpadoc.  I'll bet it was a real treat to meet Willie G.! :2vrolijk_21:

I think Nidan's right.  I believe they are underestimating the market for another SERG, especially when you can go into most dealers and see CVO Dynas and Springers sitting on showroom floors but very few, if any, touring bikes.  Besides, you sorta have to question what he is saying about the CVO group only producing bikes the consumer demands.  The SE V-Rod was produced at a time when V-Rods on the whole weren't meeting the sales targets that had been established for the then relatively new model.  Many of those sat for extended periods on dealer's showrooms at the time, as well. :nixweiss:

Maybe Willie G needs to lurk on this site a little. :nixweiss: Then he'd know what the consumers want.

dOOd, if he was lurking on this site how would he tell?

Would popularity of the SERG be judged by post count or would it be by topics?

SEUC as of today  22,828 post
                          1,088 topics

SEEG as of today   25,645 post
                           1,284 topics

SERG as of today    2,415 post
                            216 topics

Even humor has more than the SERG
                           4,979 post
                           1,745 topics

These are the facts, we may not like them but they are straight from the CVOHARLEY home page.
For me this explains why it's not being produced.
And no, I don't like it but it is what it is.

but if you are looking at numbers, there are less SERG/SERG2 then any other FLH_ based CVO 2yr run. this means less bikes less SERG members and less total posts

How long has it been since a SERG was made (2001) and how many people constantly talk about bringing them back. I think of all the SE produced the SERG and SEEG are the two most wanted to be done again. IMO. Sometimes you have to look past numbers (the obvious) to get to the truth.

I agree but the production #'s were something we didn't control.
The control of those #'s were by a corporation whose intent was to turn a profit.

How about this question?

What is the # of SEEG post in relationship to the # of SEEG's produced.
And the same for the SEUC.

Then compare those #'s to the same for a SERG.

For example (and these are not good #'s)
25,000 SEEG post and 5,000 SEEG's produced would equal 5 post per bike built.

A per bike built ratio would show the amount of interest.

I don't have the #'s or I would post it myself.

Any help here?

When looking at the post/topic count for this forum, keep in mind, this site wasn't started until 2002, almost a full three years after the SERG was out.  By that time, no doubt a lot of the new-ness of that model had worn off for its owners.  Also, even if the site had been up and running when the SERGs first arrived, I would go so far as to say the internet was pretty much in its infancy at the time and not many people were doing what we enjoy doing today, chatting about our rides and talking about the next mods (not that SERGs get modded ;)).

Good thought Gary but using the same logic then how many on this site would love to have a 69 Camaro Z28, or a AC Bristol bodied Cobra, or 427/435 Corvette?

What we want and what a company can produce and make a profit sometimes are two different things.

We sometimes want what we can't have. And there is usually a good reason what we want is not being produced.

And that bottom line is money/profit

Brian

I agree with you there!
I have to add this though,
When I see a Screaming Eagle I give them a site card.
Even the older CVO's. Just because they were produced before this site was has no bearing to me.
Actually for me it makes them even more special because of what they can bring to the table in information.

I gave up on my wait for the CVO Road Glide and purchased the CVO Ultra Classic.  I decided if they did not make one for the 08 model year they probably would not make one for a while.  With retirement hastily approaching I wanted to get a new CVO and have it about paid for before leaving my 8 to 5 job.  I will just cherish my 00' until I sell it.  I still think that the Road Glide is the best riding and handling touring bike that Harley has made.  Best overall has to be the (FLX)Low Rider, last produced in 1994.  Wish that I had kept that one also.  Certainly appreciate your post from talking with Willie G.   :2vrolijk_21:

Good one Dave.   :D

Guess that means we all tend to complain about our problems more than we are willing to post about how happy we are with our rides.

I'd bet it is more a numbers game though.

Thanks for starting this thread and posting those pics. LD ( my ORG) is as close to a SERG as I could come EXCEPT for the lowers. I'd been wanting to see what they look like on an RG and from those pics, they look sweet. I'm gonna ask Santa for a set for Christmas

hahahahahahahahah   You do so love to torture me Don    hahahahahahaha

OK, I've already got $35k tied up in LD but here's what's left on the list.

Lowers
Hi output starter
Hydraulic clutch
Chrome inner primary
Vibration isolater for rear wheel
PM Chrome 6 piston Front Calipers
Chrome passenger footrest brkts
Chrome rider footrest brkts

Nothing $4k or $5k wouldn't take care of and then I've got a $40,000 "stock " 07 Road Glide

Hey buddy, that's a pretty manageable list by the standards of this crowd :huepfenlol2: .

I'd remembered the clutch.  The other bolt on items don't seem a big surprise either.  What do you have in mind for the lowers?  A very true-to-original-theme paint or some homage to CVO-ness that is all your own?

Don, the paint on LD seems to be an evolving thing. Once I get the lowers on it, it'll take a few beers, a few more beers and yeah probably a few more before I see in my minds eye what the lowers need to look like. One thing for sure, much as I hated to let Elvis go, Beags was dead on when he said I'd never owned a bike that fits me like LD does. And obviously with only one in the stable it becomes a lot easier to manage as you say the much needed upgrades. So far, the MoCo is making it easy on me too. I was convinced after everything I did to LD they'd come out with an 08 SERG. LD will be paid for by the time the 09's come out, so even if they do now, I can buy one. ( did I really say that ? ) Howie's gonna be on me again about owning two baggers -- - - especially since he's in process turning his SERK into a sport tourer     ;)

B B

Would seem that especially after your striping the visualization and process would be a requirement.  The mind's eye just too often doesn't compare to seeing the real thing except for those very few souls that are incredibly gifted that way.  I'll be looking forward to the process :2vrolijk_21: .

Hey, by the way, did you see the latest issue "New York Iron" on the newstands?  Had this long article about new classifications of heavyweight bikes.  In between Sport Touring and Touring/Full Dresser was this entire new category called HB/Dresser: Howie Bagger  :mango: .

Not that he will admit that he is heading down that path.

At least not right now.

Maybe not for a month or six.

Let's see what a year brings.    ........

Thanks for starting this thread and posting those pics. LD ( my ORG) is as close to a SERG as I could come EXCEPT  for the lowers. I'd been wanting to see what they look like on an RG and from those pics, they look sweet. I'm gonna ask Santa for a set for ChristmasB B

B B

A question for you.
Your quote,
Quote
My apologies to all of you who actually own an 00 SERG Pumpkin for my avatar. I bought one back when they first came out and like a fool sold it because the motor (in stock form ) was such a dog.

Did you leave it in stock form? If no then tell us (me) what you did to it. Mine is in need of a tune but even needing a tune it runs well above a 100 + with ease.

And concerning LD, get those lowers but then save your bucks and find you a 00 or 01 SERG and by that time you can ride mine and wonder in amazement how a dog turned into a greyhound. ;)

Chip,
I put a SE Breather kit and a set of Hooker Slip-ons on my 00 SERG. Don't get me wrong, it would run strong all day long and easily broke the century mark, but it had no take off, no real get up and go. I'd had a couple of 100" motors at that point and it just didn't run with em. Also, at the time, I was tired of high performance bikes that ran like the wind but broke down a lot. About 3 months before I bought the 00 SERG, I had ridden from east of Barstow to Dago on one cylinder with a 100 + hp 80" RK running 11.5/1 compression. So when the 03 SERK came out, I had to have one. Turned out to be a fantastic bike in it's own right, but if I could choose between having my 00 SERG Pumpkin or Elvis back again, I'd take the 00 SERG. So right now LD is my only motorcycle and likely to be for awhile. Linda and I are helping the oldest with her Medical School bills and the youngest is headed off to graduate school soon. Also, with my DJD not getting any better, retirement is something I have to pay attention to. Linda and I do ok, but we're working stiffs just like most. So to be honest my friend, another bike is just not in the picture at the moment. Who knows what the future will bring, but for the time being, I will live vicariously through my friends like you who have a stable full of fine horses.

As Brian (103T) pointed out earlier in another topic 00 and 01 was light years ago in internet and dyno developement.
I bet a good tune with a power commander and that dog would have woke up.

The MOCO is all over this site, believe me!  As well they should be. I'm hoping for a  SERG next year, I dont see why they wouldnt, it will sell like the proverbial hotcakes, and in my opinion, it aint a CVO unless its a REAL CVO!

This is a CVO MC based site. Look at hdforums and the number of Road Glides there. Road Glides are gaining popularity. One side of me says that is unfortunate as every parking lot will have a half a dozen where as they don't now. On the other hand it would be nice to see more Road Glide specific stuff available. Look at the number of Road Glide features in American Bagger. They sure look nice all tricked out. So with all that babble said I'd sure like to see a new Screamin' Chicken (without the 110 though).

I don't think the post count by forum means anything regarding the popularity of any of the models.  There are less folks who have CVO RG's than the other CVO bikes so it stands to reason there would be less posts in those forums.  Plus it has been since 2001 since they did one and even though those are still great looking bikes they are getting a little long in the tooth.

The truth is the MOCO could build any of the touring bikes as the CVO bike and they would all sell out.  CVO's are of such a limited supply there is no worry at all they will sell out any and I mean any touring bike they choose to put out as a CVO model.  Facts are facts and I bet no one will disagree with that.

Now all that said, it is way past time for MOCO do do something special for us loyal RG fans.  We have been patient and waited all too long for the return of a CVO RG.  For the last few years I am at the top of my dealers list hoping that when the new line up of CVO bikes is announced it is the RG.  Each of those years I passed and did not buy the other CVO touring bike choices.  I still have that green in my pocket and waiting for the day to come when I can give it to them and pick up my new CVO RG.  Maybe next year is the year?  We can only hope so.

Just makes me wonder how people come up with their rationale.
Will it sell?
Of course!
As Puzzled said, "Road Glides are gaining popularity"
Baggers are in.
All baggers are in.
Ck the sales figures for the last 10 years for the Road Glide platform.
Have they ever sold like proverbial hotcakes?
Never!
Will they sell now?
Yes!
But based on history not as well as a FLH based platform.
Can the "Motor Company" build a FLT CVO?
Of course, but in a public company where profit dictates production, the answer is most likely not.
But then we can always dream and hope!

I love my SERG and am glad it resides here!
Next time you see one, remember the numbers are dwindling and the values are going up.
The first is a shame and the last is good!

I wonder what the long-term plans are for the Road Glide?  I heard this might be the last year for the Springer for awhile.  Maybe they'll do another SERG just before the Road Glide goes on hiatus. :nixweiss:

BTW . . . no offense, they're fabulous looking bikes and I'd love to have one in the garage, but the SE Springer . . . . more proof the CVO group doesn't "only produce bikes the consumer demands."

I'm hoping they never make another one. The Mo Co's position continues to make the SERG a very desirable bike. Plus we SERG owners hardly ever see ourselves going the opposite way on the road.  The Road Glide has been Harley's best kept secret for years. I had two XR-1000 back in the late 80's. They produced that bike for two (83 and 84) years and only in two colors. Now 20 odd years later its a $15K bike.

Harley continues to load the market with the SEEG and SERK. Eventually they'll be like belly buttons everyone will have one! Harley should take lessons from Porsche when manufacturing unique models. They should drop either the SEEG or the SERK from the CVO line-up for five years. They have plenty of models to turn into CVO's.

SEEG was only two years (like the SERG) '04 & '05 the MoCo has had three consecutive years of the SEUG since then.

Fired00d,
I stand corrected! I would like to see the CVO Bat Wing model or the CVO Road King model take a sabbatical. But since Baggers are in such high demand I don't see it happening. For some reason the MoCo seems compelled to continue with a Bat Wing bike every year. I was impressed when they came out with the Springer. Someone at the MoCo was thinking out of the box in 07 and 08.

For whatever reason it seems that "custom" baggers have taken off. I think they have actually become more popular then custom choppers. :nixweiss: I think the MoCo is taking a look at what the current trend is and trying to cash in on that. If you walk into most dealers you have a better chance of seeing a CVO other then a bagger sitting on the floor that hasn't already been sold.

Hey just an FYI, I was at the Stone Mountain HD and came a cross this customized Road Glide with a 110, custom paint, chrome that would make d00d jealous, wheels, true trak, etc.  I have the pic emailed me from the dealer but the res is too high and I'm not computer savy enough to adjust it.  It should be coming  up on thier web site soon.  They also had a Street Glide there done up with the same stuff.  They're asking 33k and somehow saying that everything is discounted 20%.  I can forward the pics if needed. let me know. Or if one of the web masters can re-size and post let me know, it's worth taking a look see.

I personally think the Babyboomers are getting older and want more comfort. I sold my 1996 Custom Springer for a SERG because I was sick of tying clothes around my waist during season changes. Now I just throw a jacket in my bag. Plus having a radio and windshield makes the ride much more enjoyable.

Frank-
Thats exactly why I went to the bagger, I had an 06 SE Fat Boy that was beautiful.  But in order to go on a good day or two day trip, I would have to change seats, add the luggage rack, bag, put on my ipod, etc.  Now I just throw some stuff in the bags and roll out.  The riding is much different too, much more comfortable.  But I guess I could be part of the boom you're talking about, I'm 34 and used to tease my dad about getting a Road Glide telling him he needed an AARP card to purchase it!  I'm eating my words now and I dont mind at all!

That probably does have a lot to do with it. With more of the baggers out there the younger guys are seeing how they can truly be a custom bike and have comfort too.

I forgot to mention that the custom baggers at Stone Mtn had the heads diamond cut on the 110.  They are changing the wheels to a 21" in the front and an 18" in the rear.

That probably does have a lot to do with it. With more of the baggers out there the younger guys are seeing how they can truly be a custom bike and have comfort too.

I sold (gave) my 98 RG to my son thinking he would sell it and get a V-Rod. He has since changed his mind. With the tour pack off and custom exhaust someone gave him and radio blasting all the time, its bagger forever for him. In SoCal its not the exception its the rule these days.  ;D

This is one old cowboy that would have jumped all over a CVO Road Glide. I had hoped they would have one for 08. When I got my RG in fall of 04 they were scarce as hens teeth here in NC. In fact mine was a demo,  the shop owner had been riding and had most up grades on it all ready. Now days seems everywhere you go there are RG's. I believe a CVO RG would sell like hot cakes, wake up MoCo.

Rumor is Willie is working with Rotex on the water cooled stuff. Big inches running lean with fuel injection just isn't cutting it. The RG would be the perfect platform for a transition bike and let the rest of the models catch up later.  Doc

Based on the new Buell, I would buy into the above.

Well if he can completely hide the radiator, and keep single crankpin flywheels in it so it still sounds like a Harley, we might have something to talk about! (and no fairing of course!) ;)

My beloved Road Glide the first Harley to have a radiator.

The low down on the Road glide pictured.  Belongs to J.T. the HOG rep for the west coast.  He has ridden a Road Glide as long as I've know him.  The bike is stock except for the rim he has the new 18in front wheel(notice the different rotor and how it opens up the wheel) and matching 16in rear rim.  He had just had it done during Street Vibes in Reno this year.

OK,ok, here is the real scoop. Terry's (Bimbo)  real maiden name is Marie Therese Alma Lilian Chalifoux. One day she snuck out of the French neighborhood in Salem Mass and met Nicolo Antonio Bimbo in the Italian neighborhood. They eventually married and had a little bimbo. Shortly thereafter the couple divorced and Terry and Little Nick moved to California. Terry and I met a few years later and we married and raised Little Nick. When we married I gave her a car for wedding present and the custom plates read EX BIMBO. We still have the plates on our Nitro. Here are pics of Little Nick and my granddaughter Brittney Bimbo.
