Remove Air Baffle in hot weather - 2009 SERG
« on: June 20, 2009, 03:31:56 PM »

This may have already been posted and if so, I apologize:

There is an air baffle under the triple tree on FLTRs (including the SERG) which is designed to push the flow of air down.  The following is quoted from Section 2.20 of the service manual:

NOTE
By allowing the flow of air to pass under the fuel tank and over the cylinder heads, removing the air baffle evacuates heated air and provides some relief to the rider in warmer temperatures: 70°F (21°C) or above.

It's a 5 minute procedure to remove this baffle and/or reinstall it when colder weather arrives.  I don't know if it will really help, but it can't hurt.

Cool.  Didn't know I had one.  Does it affect anything else?

For me, on my Ultra, I leave it on year 'round. I really don't notice much of a difference. A lot of folks take it off and notice immediate relief. I never did. Road Glides may be different.

Yes removing it allows the air that is normally directed onto your engine to follow the fork tubes and create a bunch of turbulance in the area of your face shield, these were standard issue until HD removed them in 02 using rider comfort as an excuse, I even had to buy one for my 07 SEUC  they do a great job on bat wing bikes keeping air from coming up under your chin, they are almost a necessity on the RoadGlide.

I second that. I buy it immediately if it is not installed on a new bike. With the 110 engine, I tend to be more concerned about engine heat than my personal comfort anway.

Ride safely,

Hääää ?
You do mean that it is better in warmer weather to ride without that baffle ?
I wonder and do not believe .

HJ, Thats factory double talk, removing the baffle lets more air get to your upper body supposedly cooling the rider better, its not better for your engine.

When the baffle is in place, it directs the air flowing between the forks downward.

According to what I quoted from the service manual, removing the baffle allows the air to flow under the tank and over the top of the cylinders, theoretically moving that pocket of hot air out and away from the rider.

I thought it was interesting that it would be noted in the service manual as a possible method for relief from the engine heat for the rider.  Whether or not it works is something those who remove it will have to judge for themselves.

I think people are confused about the baffled.  The MoCo stopped installing the baffle on certain batwing bikes a few years back because it decreased the air flow over the heads resulting in higher operating temps.  Removing the baffle increases engine cooling across the heads but creates unwanted turbulence on the rider.
