Favorite windshield for a Road Glide??
« on: June 20, 2012, 09:31:42 PM »

Hello,

Any thoughts on who has the best all around windshield?  I have a Klock Works 8" that looks great, except for traveling.  I am thinking of embarking on a road trip, and am thinking of going to a taller shield.  I am roughly 5'11" and weigh around 195 lbs.

Thanks,

Glide Boy

You're built just like me. Same dimensions. My inseam is 34". That would relate to your torso height to see if we're the same in the torso.

I have the KW 12 Flare on mine and like it.

The Windvests are very well liked on the RG forum. The little flip does seem to work. I'm 5'10" and like my 10" WV, but I like some wind. A 12" WV would be perfect for me if I wanted more complete wind protection.

Best windshield is relative to torso height and how you measure on the bike.  I have a 12" Windsplitter by HD and I like it a lot for every day use, however for a long road trip like 2,000-3,000 miles I would want a taller shield for protection and better music volume.  I am looking for a used 14" shield now for a 3,000 mile trip.  I will swap it out once a year for our annual trip, otherwise the 12" is fine for me!

I am happy with the Cee Bailey Cee Glide windshield on my '11 SERGU in the light tint.  Height depends on several factors, so the only way to know for sure is to take measurements.

How you sit, your height, torso length, neck length, and what type of helmet you like to wear all play a part in getting it right.

I have a Clearview GT stock height clear  windshield with recurve forsale, used on my 09 serg for about 6 months,  I am 6"2 and not enough wind protection for me.   Great shape paid around $220.00 with freight will sell for $150.00.  Thanks  Frankie O

if a person has a  Garmin Harley mount  in the faring will any of the wingshields interfere with the GPS by chance?
are all the windshields here rigid  enough to not distort in shape  when we get caught in hig winds. i recall the stock  windshield on an 04 would fles quite a bit

HD doesn't make a dash mount for the GPS, at least not for the RG...that I'm aware of.  If you're asking about a Batwing, then no, the windshield won't interfere with the GPS mount, not matter which one you use.

On an RG, most of the aftermarket windshields are thicker material than stock.  My Cee Bailey does not flex.

great question.  i have tried many.  Clearview if you ride without a passenger as you can see over and be well protected but a passenger gets creamed.  if you ride with passengers stock Harley works best when sized so uou barely can see over.

There is a way to remove one of the small gauges (like the useless air temp gauge) and mount the GPS in that hole, with an adapter and bracket.   There is also a bracket that can be had to mount the GPS just above the Tach/Speedo pod.  Oherwise, you are stuck with the handlebar mount like came on the '11 SERGU.

too bad there is no room for the one that is used on EG and have room and keep the guages visible that are there.. oh well the handle bar mount is not that bad actually

There's really no good place to put a dash mount on the RG inner fairing...for one, because it's stationary.  The most logical place would be on top of the radio pod, but that's a tight spot, and not a lot of folks would want it sticking up there.  The gauge thing is really not too bad...just move the fuel gauge (which is next to useless) down to where the air temp gauge (which is totally useless) is and throw the air temp gauge in the trash can...it's useless anyway.  All I need to know is whether it's hot or cold, and I can tell that without a gauge on a motorcycle.  ;)

Can you post a picture of your GPS mount.

Phantom...that's the application I was talking about.  In his case, he removed the Volt meter because he has a tweeter where the air temp gauge would go on a bike without the tweeter.  If I had a "normal" RG, I'd pull the fuel gauge and move it down to where the tweeter is on his bike and shelf the air temp gauge.  I like mine on the handlebar, but from what I've gathered, it's a bit of a PITA to run the wiring internally to do so.  Mine came that way, so I'm good to go.

But San Diego's way is a good alternative and a nice looking installation.

I put a Cee Bailey with light tint and it was the 3rd shield I've had.  By far the best and the folks there are good to deal with.

I'm on my fifth wind screen and the last one works the best by far. Its a 2 piece by Bagger Shield. Keep it low for around town and up for highway cruising. only complaint is during hard rain the water swirls to the inside some. No buffetting and it looks great.

Try a Madstrad windshield, there totally adjustable and come in light or dark tint and I believe 3 different height's. There the best on the market and they stand behind there product better than anyone I've dealt with before.

WINDVEST 12 INCH,  BOUGHT THE 14 AND I COULD LIGHT A CIGARETTE WITH A BIC GOING 70MPH BUT IT WAS JUST A LITTLE TALL FOR ME TO SEE OVER.  12 INCH WORKS GREAT FOR ME BUT PASSENGER CATCHES A LITTLE WIND

...better view. The shield gets closer to the rider than any others I've seen and with the recurve offers great protection from the wind, rain and bugs. Doc
