Headin to Sturgis for the 1st time
« on: May 24, 2009, 10:23:07 PM »

With a few friends who also have never been there before. I was wondering if the The Sturgis Rally Guide Book offered on the Sturgis web site worth it or not.
We're staying in Deadwood and only gonna hit downtown Sturgis lightly I think. Rest of the time will be riding the area.( except at nite ;) )Anyone have any other suggestions for planning on whats happening there?

Don't buy any guide book.  As stated above, you don't need it.  You can find information on Main St in Sturgis for free at the rally headquarters including maps and rides and events.  Go to the Veteran's Club on Main at least once for breakfast and get information on all the races.  I recommend the professional hill climb for a don't miss event.  Enjoy!  You should try to ride to Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse and the Badlands as well as Custer state park.  All are worth seeing on your first trip to South Dakota.  The riding in the Black Hills is fantastic.  Carry rain gear.  Eat anywhere except the vendor booths on Main St in Sturgis, those are overpriced and generally crap.

The best thing about riding in the rain is you don't have to stop to piss.

In Sturgis be sure to put both feet down at stop signs. cops are looking for a reason to stop people and don't drink a thing when on the bike. All gas stations and hotels have great maps of the area for riding and locating "stuff".
http://www.sturgis.com/  This web site has some great threads about the things that go on there.  Have a great time.

I agree with all above,  start looking now at points of interest and print some maps from Google or Mapquest. We're staying in Spearfish at the Lodge. Another GOT TO thing is Devils Tower WY. the H-D and HOG thing is in Rapid City, plan some time there, the dealer has a bunch of vendors set up there.
and may I suggest the Full Throttle Saloon on Thurs nite.

Try to plan your trips so you're not on the road during "deer" time.  Lots of MC vs. deer crashes in the area every year.  When I went in '06, we experienced daily afternoon thunderstorms for the whole week.  It wasn't a big problem, but something to be aware of, because when you get up in the morning it is a glorious blue-sky day and suddenly this nasty wind-blowing, hail-spewing electrical storm brews up and makes a mess of things and then just as suddenly it disappears.  I understand it is a fairly common thing for that area at that time of year.
Ride safe and have a great trip!  It was one of the top 5 things I have done in my life!

If you want to spend a night away from Deadwood a good two day ride would be to Chief Joseph Hwy. (HWY 296) near Cody WY.  CJ Hwy is probably the most spectacular road in that part of the country!  860 miles my sound like a long haul to ride a 50 mile stretch of road but believe me, it's worth it!  Plus most of the other 810 miles aren't bad either!

Also, if you're not that interested in the rally I would go a different time of year.  A lot less bikes on the road!

Life's journey is not to arrive safely at the grave in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out shouting Holy Chit......... What a Ride!

We're doin' our first trip out there this year too.  We got a condo in Spearfish.  At least one nite,  we plan to do the Buffaloe Campground events.......kinda pricey,  but they have several top name performers if you check out their site. :cherry:

If you're going to the Chip for a concert, get there early, at least 2 hours. The line to get in backs up 3 miles to town and it's stop and go all the way out to the Chip prior to the concerts. At least get to the Full Throttle Saloon 2-3 hrs early, then it's only a half mile to the Chip for the concert.  Have a great time.

Moscoot,

Was there last year for the week starting on Mon.  Rode 1400 miles while I was there and loved every minute of it.  Got to "Sturgis" on Thursday and it was so crowded we left.  Didn't go back.  Too much awesome riding to do.

Enjoy.

See you at Poo's.
