Rear lic. plate
« on: January 25, 2010, 10:32:20 AM »

Ok, I know several of you out there have done a rear lic. plate mod. I have the Kury rear lic. plate holder with the built in LEDs. The bracket that mounts to the fender itself, is there any way of mounting it WITHOUT drilling any new holes in my fender??? And How??? What I tried to do was use the same inner metal bracket ( the pot metal one with 2 bolt holes) But the bolts will stick out just far enough to cause a problem with the curvature of the lic. plate. Any suggestions??? I like this system, but I am a little hinky about drilling holes in my fender. I was able to take the electrical plug apart and will reuse it on the new bracket.  Let the advice start!!!!

Many of us have the same Kuryakn license plate frame with the LED license plate light.  I think you gotta drill the holes.....don't know anyway around that. :nixweiss:

They don't show.  Take a look here at these photos.....  http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=40248.0

Jack-

I desperately tried to mount it without drilling holes.....but I wound up drilling holes......i did reuse the metal bracket, and plastic cover to keep debris off of the wiring too though. I just turned the bracket 90 degrees and made some modifications to the set-up.  I think you will just have to drill!!   :nixweiss:

Jack:

Yup. You're going to have to "Cowboy Up" and drill it to be really happy.

JCZ was the first to do it and provided lots of direction to others including me.  Now several others have done it.

I posted the pin and connector part numbers in one of my earlier posts so you can just go to the dealer and pick them up.

Just be sure the bike is level, the tag frame is centered and is where you want it top/bottom. Measure 3-4 times and check and recheck then tape the location where the holes are to be drilled and "pull the trigger".

We'll look forward to your pictures

Regards

Yea, I know. MAN up and drill the bitch!!!! I purchased all of the electrical items, pins ect before I purchased the bracket. My wife spent 30+ years working for a wiring harness manufacturer. She went through that plug in about 30 seconds. I think I'll keep her around awhile.

I suggest you measure the stock wire and add a little length to the Kurakyn wire before you cut it. Then you can plug it in on the side and behind the right rear turn signal and make a mini harness loop from a tie/tie.

Oh Yea. the Kurakyn frame won't conform to the fender so you will need to consider using longer bolts to pull it gently into shape and then replace those bolts with the ones you want to use that will be the correct length.

Also if you don't want to drill though the brace behind the fender, you can use the stock bolts and some half thickness nuts with nylon in the threads to hold it.

BE SURE TO USE A BOARD BEHIND THE FENDER!!!! It sounds funny but "chit happens" and it won't be funny if your tire suddenly starts going flat.

We are all messing around with solutions to insulating the tag frame from the fender ranging from nothing to pieces of stripping from the inner/outer fairing.

I hope it comes out to your liking.

Drill the holes. Paint or silicone to prevent corrosion. It will look great!

Went to NAPA and bought a sheet of rubberized cork gasket material like used on valve cover gaskets. It comes in solid sheets. Cut it to the outside diameter of the plate frame. This sits against the fender then the plate itself and finally the frame. discarded the mounting plate.
