Vance & Hines High Output Exhaust getting louder?
« on: June 26, 2017, 11:32:39 PM »

I bought this 15 CVO SG with about 400 miles on it last year.  It's 10 months later and I have 3000 miles on her.  When I got it, she came with the popular V&H high output exhaust set up and it seemed to have that nice throaty growl but not obnoxious.  Today it seems like it is louder and raspier.  Is there anything I might try to get back that deeper growl I liked?  I am assuming that breaking process has something to do with this.

Thanks,

Demetri

My .02
Contact Steve @ FullSac to inquire if he can recore with his cores, at one time he was doing these... will sound better & you'll pick up that low torque loss with HO's
You'll have to have it retuned, but well worth this mod IMO

I have a Thunderheader on my old Wide Glide and it has gotten louder over time so maybe same for your V&H pipe.

Looks like  V&H makes a quiet baffle for my exact issue.  Ordered them from Revzilla.   I've got the Power Duel w/4.5" High Output mufflers.  Am I gonna need a slide hammer to get those out since the tips are so small to get a good grip on?  Any advice?

Hi DM,

Having the same issue with my same headers you have and my Monster Rounds getting louder over time V&H told me these mufflers are the most quiet muffler they offer and 450 mufflers are louder deciblels.  Love the windshield btw thanks a lot!

My pleasure Donnie.

Here's a link to what I ordered for the sound issue...

I assume the mufflers have packing in them.  Over time the packing deteriorates and is less effective in damping sound.  Back in the day when bikes had easily removed baffles, we often repacked them when they became too harsh.  These days with welded in baffles it takes a lot more effort, but I would guess repacking would restore those mufflers to their earlier sound quality.

Jerry, I just finished removing the end caps and pulled out the baffles in preparation for the new inserts.  I observed the left slide out muffler/baffle slid out significantly easier that the right.  The right side packing appears new whereas the left side appears reasonably worn for only 3000 miles.  I also noticed the chrome is starting to pit on the right end cap.  The bike is 2 years old.  Do you think V&H would replace the caps under their warranty perhaps?  Click on the link for pics.  https://goo.gl/photos/WcX8MG5rHkYiAZia9

You can contact V&H and ask about replacing the pitted end caps, but after reading their warranty statement it appears they don't warrant the finish, and it also looks like they only warrant the parts to the original purchaser since they require a copy of the original invoice.  This is the warranty statement:

"All of our exhaust systems are warranted against defects in material and/or workmanship for a period of 1 year. This does not cover finishes such as plating, or painted surfaces with discoloration or rust. This warranty shall be limited to the repair or replacement of the system, which may be proven defective under normal use. We will not warranty any system that has been abused, misused, improperly installed, or modified.

Dealers or distributors are not authorized to make dispositions binding upon Vance & Hines. We will not be responsible for any labor charges incurred in removing or replacing any system under warranty. All returns must be accompanied by a return authorization number and a copy of the purchase invoice. Parts being returned without a return authorization may be refused at our receiving docks."

Yes, I went to their site and read the exact same thing.  Who knows, I already sent them an email with photos.  Maybe they'll make an exception or maybe they'll tell me to pound salt...   ::)

So I installed the quiet baffle kit was a piece of cake....  That is once I got my hands on a slide hammer.   As stated, more torque, my low end growl, not as raspy and I can hear my sound system better.  Win Win.... :orange: :mango: :huepfenjump3: :bananarock:
