Out of gas = 5.761 gallons
« on: January 15, 2011, 03:55:19 PM »

Do I really need to go into the details as to how I know this? Ok.  First time EVER in 10 yrs of riding.  Just not used to the 110 difference I guess.
-  My TRIP B = 201 miles on that tank.
-  The "r" display did go to "Low" after it hit 10.
-  But on my 103 and 96, when it went to "Low" - and I fllled up right away - it only took 4.7.

Obviously that doesn't work the same way on the 11 SERG.  Now I know.  And yes, people in Northern VA are assholes like everywhere else and loudly honk horns at you while u r pushing your bike.  And yes, I'm tapped out!!!!!!  DOOFUS

Curious.  When you filled it with 5.761, did you fill it right into the filler neck so you could get no more in?  Or where di you fill it to?

Hmm.. I have not run to empty yet .. close, running on fumes. My experience is when it gives you X miles range left, you have about 1 gal remaining. It drops to LOW pretty quick and you probably have .5 gals left at that time. I think the most I have ever filled up is at 5.8gals.. and that was running on fumes situation.

I have considered buying on of these: http://www.reda-innovations.com/rgc_home.html
Someone on another thread kindly posted about this gas container that fits in your saddle bags.

In theory (which is all we can hang our hats on with H-D, since they aren't terribly consistent), the fuel tank is rated to hold 6 gallons when filled to either one or two inches below the bottom of the filler pipe, I forget which.  So if you fill like most of us, up to the bottom of the filler pipe, you would expect to get more than 6.0 gallons into the tank.  Other's have posted in the past that they could get more than 6.0 gallons in their tanks, so I'm surprised that you could only manage 5.76 gallons. :confused5:  Was the tank actually dry, or perhaps was there fuel remaining that the pickup didn't manage to suck up?  What I'm trying to say is that you might want to verify the actual capacity of that tank and make sure there isn't some other reason the engine ran out of fuel when it did.  Drain it completely, then fill to the bottom of the filler pipe and see what you get.  If it still comes up less than 6 gallons, something isn't right and you might want to discuss it with H-D.  As for the accuracy of the gauge, that's another of the many things Harley passes off and expects customers to live with.  If they won't fix it, you or someone you hire can at least make it read more accurately in the all important bottom half of the range by adjusting the float rod or making some electrical tweaks.

I think it's the reflection from all that chrome on your bike.  The chrome reflects the light upwards off the engine, projecting it into the paint where the metalflake magnifies and concentrates the power.  When this happens on the fuel tank the gasoline is suspended 2 inches off the bottom of the tank.  Next time fill up on a cloudy day and report back your findings.

I usually begin to panic when the word "lo" appears on my speedo.

Good Morning Roofus

 Some people perfer Dakota Digitalis

I find the appearance to be quit nice and I'm told they are accurate :2vrolijk_21:. I know this doesn't help you with the amount of gas you may be able to put in your tank, but it does help to manage the amount gas/miles you have remaining.

They come in many colors but are spendy

Just one point of clarification on the accuracy of their gauges.  No gauge can be more accurate than the sending unit feeding it.  So if the sender is off on your stock gauge it'll be off for the Dakota Digital gauge as well.

What the DD gauges do, however, that makes a difference is have a calibration that can be done at the instrument.  With that you can make the gauge compensate for and adust its readings to whatever the sending unit might be doing.

Thank you !  But like I said, once in 10 yrs I made this miscalculation.  Now that I "know" the 110 difference and the "actual" hold of the tank, I'll be on my game.  DD LOOKS COOL TOO !!!!! DOOFUS

Not to worry...from what I've read in a couple of other topics it is not your fault that you ran out of gas.  The fault lies with d00d,  ;D
