Making the tour pack removable having the best of both worlds?
« on: January 10, 2012, 10:16:28 AM »

Hey,

Before i bought this bike, I had a skunk on order.  I rarely ride with a passenger and really only use the tour pack when I travel.  I called the local HD dealer and asked what it would cost for parts and labor to rig the tour pack so it was easy disconnect so I can have a 1 of a kind RG custom when I wanted, or ride 1 of 1,347 SERGU too.  They said they only did it once, and it cost the customer over $2,000 for the mods  :o :o  I spoke with the parts manager who I had known for several years that started out on the counter, and he said the expense was in the wiring?  The amp, electric locks and such if you wanted it to all work both ways?  He said if you wanted to trash the Harley tour pack amp, that would save a lot of money and time, but you would still have a pretty hefty investment?  He said things you don't think about, like the filler strips when the tour pack is off, and you probably don't want that cushy pillowy seat if you are looking for that slick custom look.  When you take all that into consideration, thats $$$$

Any thoughts?  I like the idea of the 1 of a kind but I have limits!!

Rio,  This has been done it many times by guys who own SEUC's.  You might want to try the search function and I'm sure you will find threads with instructions.  Good luck!

I have read some of the threads, none of them were extremely descriptive.  My problem is that I can tinker around, but if i can't do it by looking at a picture, it's beyond my abilities.  Maybe someone that did it can chime in and we can talk?  I was told that you have to make a significant amount of mods to do it right?

Here is a pic of my Buddies 11 sergu with detachable tour pack. If he put a different seat on it , it will look really close to the 2012....

Better than a 2012, better wheels, and no skulls.  I would love to have that look as an option, actually, the tour pack would be off the bike all the time except for road trips.  I guess it's one of those things that you just have to start taking things apart and see where it takes you?

It really looked nice. With a solo seat on it, it would look sweet !!!

Thanks, Im not a patient person or technically or mechanically talented.  My dealer said about 2k which was all about rewiring.  I thought that was crazy.  I can see it being expensive with new amps, seat, and hardware?  Labor?  Curious what he says

I don't know the US prices but as to the work and parts needed your dealer is correct. The wiring really is a beast and needs to be done with particular diligence to avoid a source of future trouble.

The putting stuff on and taking stuff off, I'm OK with.  When it comes to electrical and wiring, I am lost, and I agree, these bikes have become mini computers and any type of electrical short or problem can haunt you forever it can make the ownership experience miserable.  I really want to make this mod because I know that I will probably rarely ever put the tour pack back on once this is done.  With the electric locks, amps, tour pak lights, I just don't want any issues down the road.  I really don't think I should or will go this one alone.  I will either try and find someone that can help or give it up?
