Loose throttle grip?
« on: February 04, 2012, 05:40:46 PM »

I took delivery of my 2011 FLTRUSE yesterday and had a great ride today. Only issue I see so far is my throttle grip has some play (in/out or left/right) which is particularly annoying when the road isnt smooth. Kind of lose the firmness of control. I was riding in a group and another CVO Streetglide 2011 had the same thing, and a standard streetglide too. Is this a Harley thing I just have to tolerate or can it be tightened up? Not seen this before when I've rented touring harleys and was never an issue on the BMW's I used to have?

It's easily adjusted with the two nuts on the cables underneath.

Thanks. I don't see what you mean though. Could you be more specific as there are no cables or nuts to see below?

The '08 and later Touring models have electronic throttle control, so there are no cables.  I think I understand the OP to mean he has excessive endplay of the grip, such that it moves in and out of the switch housing laterally, not rotationally.  If that's the case, try loosening the two screws that secure the switch housing to the bar and try sliding the switch housing further inboard.  I don't know how much movement there is in the newer bikes, but if there is any at all it should reduce the endplay.  You don't want to eliminate the endplay completely, as that can lead to the sticking and binding situation that was common on the early ETC bikes.

I have the same issue in my 09 SERG.  It travels about 1/16 to 1/8 inch on the throttle.  It has always been this way to the best of my knowledge.
