Rant on Motor Carriers
« on: September 14, 2006, 07:13:08 PM »

Maybe Hubbard or others in the know can shed some light.......

Ordered a Shriner's Edition Ultra a while back, and knew of an "expected" ship date of 09/11/06 as shown on Dealer's H-D Net.

WVultra - I had this exact thing happen to me when I purchased my 04 SEEG.  What I found out from a friend who works at MoCo is the ship date is the date your bike goes into the trailer - so the financial folks can count it as a shipment.  But, the trailer doesn't leave until it is full.  So, if you're bike is one of the first bikes in the trailer, it could sit there for awhile, especially if the truck is going to a more remote part of the country.  You see, the truck doesn't just have to get full, it has to get full with bikes going to your general area.  Mine sat for about 4 days before the truck actually rolled.

Being in the trucking business as an owner operator and working with a large manufacturer I can vouch for the quarterly/monthly quota thing, if your shipment is in the middle of the month no rush, the end of the month my phone rings and the rates rise!! As  for Eagle-Southeast - not a known carrier - gut instinct says this is the Moco's private fleet Southeast division. The worst part of the trucking business is the shippers or recievers having no respect at all for a drivers time. It doesnt cost them anything and they abuse it horribly. I know drivers that regularly spend 6-8 hours waiting to get loaded or unloaded - a procedure that takes about 30 minutes usually. Or better yet - the load they called you for that was HOT - is delayed a week. Since they pay to ship by the mile they could care less how long you sit til they get to you even though you had an appointment, but be late for an appointment and you could get a $150 fine plus you will sit and wait for hours. Fit this into a schedule that must be accounted for in a logbook and you have an industry full of people cheating on logbooks to make a decent wage while working 80-100hours a week, scary and sad. Don't let them blame the Carrier - this is soley a logistics problem on Harley's end - I'd bet a set of tires on it.

ULTRA.  What more can you say?  Think how good that "Led-Sled" would look with Black-Walls, and Eighty-Spoke Wheels, Ben!  Just thinkin' out loud, Ben.  Not suggesting you spend any more Money, or anything.  ;) Enjoy!  Later--HUBBARD

To shed some light on the Eagle shipper, last year I bought my SED on e-bay and had it shipped from New England to Tennessee. I got three quotes and Harley was the lowest. Eagle delivered it and the driver was the same guy that delivered my SEEG a year before with a different company. I asked him if he had changed employers and he told me no, Eagle was a new department for them that was under direct contract with H-D. So when you call H-D to get a shipping quote, it comes from Eagle; at least shipping to Southeast.
