Beads.......???
« on: May 04, 2019, 02:07:11 PM »

I noticed the rear wheel weight is gone.......thinking beads are way easier than removing the rear wheel and taking it to get balanced and have more weights put on.

Considering beads....Dyna beads......Counteract beads......any preference? Counteract is cheaper when shipping is considered....and made in North America.

They 'rebalance' each time you get going......do you feel vibes each time?..... Do they suck in stop and go traffic?

Never used them, have ridden bikes with Dyna beads & did not notice any issues.  Friends here have switched to Ride On mostly because it also offers sealant protection.  Friends like it a lot & when I have ridden a bike with Ride On I never notice anything, have heard it balances out in the first initial mile ridden or so.

I had the Dyna beads in my lifted truck before because of the tire size and never had an issue. Also ran them in the front tire of my '11 SERGU with no issues. Mechanics will hate you though if you forget to tell them they're in there when you go in for a tire change.

I've not used the Ride-on but have read many post from people that are very pleased with it.

I have dynabeads in my back tire and will be putting them in the front when it’s time for tire replacement (May do it before if I lose a weight again) I like them because you never have to worry about rebalancing the tire because it is constantly balancing itself.  I’ve never used Ride-On but I like the idea of balancing and some puncture protection in one product.

I went with Dynabeads on my Pro Street for exactly the same reason as yourself 'weight shedding' I would never go back to weights again. 2 ounces in the front 3 in the rear (but I am running a 260 on the rear).

Yes they do,....no there isn't any vibration,.....you don't even know they're in there when running them at any speed.

I run with them and haven't had any issues and I've been from "0" to "90" and everything inbetween with no issues.

You can reuse them when doing a tyre change as well

I've been using Dyna Beads for over 10 years now and I wouldn't have it any other way. I use 3 ozs in rear and 2 ozs in front on my CVO. When I change tires I'll scoop them out and reuse them, all I know is they work for me.

Check out this video on them:

That video proves the simple things can make the biggest difference/impression.  Reading all the information was fine but seeing them in action...that sold me on them for the next tire change.  Thanks for posting it... :2vrolijk_21:

I too lost a weight off my rear wheel and decided to get rid of the rest of the weights and insert beads through the valve stem. The valve stem did need carefully drilling out a little to get the beads in, 2 ounces in the front and when I went 260 rear tire 3 ounces in the rear, no issues whatsoever. Personally I will never go back to weights again.
I have heard of many people using Ride-On which is both a balancing medium and sealant in the event of a puncture. Both beads and Ride-On have excellent reviews and are well worth giving due consideration to if you are contemplating ditching your weights.

From their website;

* The Applicator cannot be used on valve stems with TPMS unit attached. In that case, the Pour In method must be used.

Not a deal breaker but a heads up for those of us with TPMS.

Used dyna beads in the past, they wont be able to balance tires that have imperfections. My 16x12.5x 35 mt always had balance issues, went back to stick on weights with no issues. Also beads are not recommended for low profile tires.

I used them for years and was quite happy with them.  My last tire change the technician put wheel weights on and said the beads only work at high speed, where they will disperse.  At low speed the tire is not balanced.  Don't know what to think.  Seems to me the  weights are more work for the mechanic rather than just dumping in some beads, so  laziness isn't  the answer.

He may be right when you come to a complete stop but once you start rolling, the tire is turning so fast centrifugal force comes into play very quickly...in the video I posted above I don’t know what MPH the drill is turning but I suspect it’s not as fast as a Harley wheel in motion.  Just guessing here (engineers chime in if I’m wrong) but I think anything over 20 mph the beads would be set and anything below 20 mph you would not be able to feel if it’s out of balance.

I've considered the beads but haven't really found a good reason to switch from conventional weights.  The weights work very well for me and I can dial in a wheel with little time and effort on a cheap static balancer.

I use the decorative chrome weights.  Not sure how people lose them.  Maybe the surface wasn't clean and/or adhesive wasn't good.

I actually reuse my weights.  I soak them in parts cleaner to remove the old adhesive, wash them with soap and water, then add good 3M automotive tape.

Funny I just posted earlier. After our 5000 mile trip to the west coast, I was cleaning the bike and saw that one of the front weights was missing.  I had them take off the weights and put the Dyna beads back in.  Don't know when I lost it, but I'd rather have a balanced tire at speed with beads, rather than an unbalanced one short a weight.

I've used Ride On for my last 2 tire changes and highly recommend it. In fact, after mounting my rear tire and sealing it, I realized that I forgot to align the balance dot with the valve stem. For a split second, I thought I was going to have to break the seal and wrestle the tire into its correct position. Then I realized it didn't matter because I wasn't using traditional wheel weights - the Ride On would self-balance anyway.
