Another disappointing year for some, and by the looks of it, if I were buying I would probably be leaning towards a blue 115th Anniversary Street Glide. Unfortunately, in Canada it is unlikely we'll see more than a couple of those 115th bikes up here and they would inevitably go to those customers that are lucky enough to buy new bikes every year.

Just to give a perspective on the new price for a CVO bike here in Canada.... a 2018 CVO Street Glide is presently advertised by a local HD dealer for $51,712.00 plus our Ontario 13% sales tax.  Total approx. $58,434 plus any other add-ons. Say you take the generous HD interest rate of 8.99% that's gives you a monthly payment of about $1,212 for 60 months = $72,720 total cost.

Okay, then...I'll take 2!!!  :orange:.

And on the other costs...licence plate fees $120 / yr.,  $1,500-$2,500 per bike /yr. insurance, 91 gas now about $5.53 / US gal. ($6.63 / Imp. gal.)

And now you know why I'm GRUMPY!!! :-\

Hey Grumps,

I guess down in the Niagara region they get more for all kinds of things... I pay less than $900. for insurance and my licence sticker costs $84 per year.

I hear what you're saying on the new increase price of the bikes though, and the 13% HST is a killer of course.

So glad I still love my trusty ol' Duracell.

Ride safe!

Yes, but HD only allows a Canadian resident to purchase a used bike in States. We then have to pay provincial sales tax (8% in Ont.) on any bike imported (value converted from US dollars to CDN) plus a Federal import fee - $295 plus taxes (13%). Most states do not refund their own state tax/local taxes so we also pay the taxes there and here too.

In addition, our Federal Gov't wants any bike imported to be converted to our federal vehicle standards which includes lighting and speedo changed from miles to kilometers. In the case of a SG / RG models this includes not only a new speedo, but the purchase/install a new rear fender too! Also, mufflers have to be factory certified for max. 80 db. and you need documentation certifying it has no safety recalls. I believe HD has started charging a fee for this, as well for the transferring of any remaining warranty to Canada.

Now as to the Snowbirds....those that own property and have US driver licenses can title a new bike as a US resident and then just leave it there.  Once its no longer a current model year could then import it if they choose to.

Rob

On the warranty issue, it is my understanding that a Canadian who imports a US bike can not get a warranty, even if they've paid for it in the States.  This exact thing happened to a friend of mine, and he went through hell trying to get back his money paid to a US dealer for the warranty when it was not honoured here.

Wow, that is a lot of red tape and BS.  Gotta feed the government kittie.  Expect autos would be similar, no wonder we have so many Candians with winter residences in our state.

 :nixweiss:

Begs the question (big time) WHY would one want to reside up in that cold country that remains that way for so many months out of the year. :-\

We used to go fishing each year out of Sioux Lookout,  Ontario.  It was normally close to June before (ice out) and one of our party went back up one year in Sept. and it was snowing.

The owners of our (Fly in fishing outfit) spent their winters in Arizona..................So,  we're looking at a potential year of June/July/August and then it snows and gets cold again.  WTF.

Great fishing and we all loved it..................but as a place to reside................................ :confused5:

Hey Grumps,

I guess down in the Niagara region they get more for all kinds of things... I pay less than $900. for insurance and my licence sticker costs $84 per year.

Oops, I'm bad, I renewed my bike sticker for 2 yrs and paid $84. I had just renewed the truck plate and paid the new fee of $120 for 1 yr., so guess that was still on my mind.

Was recently discussing higher insurance costs with several other Harley owners with newer HD bikes and mixed riding experience. They paid between $1500 and $2500 for newer bikes and fairly low deductibles.(<$2500)

Watch insurance brokers they like to quote you low so just sell you fire and theft, which provides you no coverage for vandalism, flying objects, little or no replacement value, and no accident forgiveness etc. (With our no-fault insurance that's a big one)

I guess I could always move up north and only pay $21 for plate sticker, and probably much less for insurance, but then their riding season isn't as long! ;D

I'm about 40 miles north of Toronto and usually ride till early December and back out on the road in early March, so we do enjoy a fairly long (9 month) riding season.  Many years the wife and I have ridden every month of the year, but mostly now we trailer to Arizona in late January and when we return in early March - we're good to hit the road!

Agreed.  A big part of why I have bought CVOs is the paint or graphics set them apart from the rest of the bikes.  With flat paint blacked out bikes, they look like a regular bike flat painted or blacked out.  The 117 engine is great and all and so are the heated grips/seat and of course the wireless headset (I don't use the CB & rarely use a helmet headset) so for me less is not more when it comes to CVO vs regular lineup.

And yeah, somebody will buy them, be happy, and love them long time.

Well, I stood by a new red CVO limited with basically no chrome yesterday, ummm, no, not for me.  If I didn't know ahead of time what a 2018 CVO was, I would not have picked it out of the line.  Blends right in with the others with the exception of the price.

And heated grips.

About heated grips. The 2017's SG were suppose to come with heated grips. When they got to the assembly line they could not install them on time. HD apparently advertised the 2017 CVO SG with heated grips. One person picked up on this and took in the brochure to the dealer and they had to install the heated grips at no cost to the owner. They are about $1 200 to install them up here.
