Title: Drain plugs? How many does a FXR3 engine, etc. have?
Post by: Deerhead on June 23, 2014, 04:08:45 PM
Hi all,
I have been looking at installing those super magnetic plugs in my engine, bike, etc. First, how many drain plugs does the bike have? And secondly, are the super magnets any good?
Ride Safe,
Robert

THANKS. How many in each location you mentioned? They are quarter size and I believe 3-5 can fit in the outside of the oil filter, correct?

Not sure exactly what product you're talking about, but you don't "add" magnets to the drain plugs.  Stick all the magnets you want on the outside of the oil filter if it makes you happy.  If your engine is really shedding that much steel and iron to make all this magnet crap necessary, you might want to spend the money on internal repairs, not magnets.  In other words, don't fall for the hype.

I agree with Jerry's statement.
You may need to take a peak inside.

Hi all,
I probably mis-described the super magnets and what my intent is. The super magnets are placed, so the description says on the outside of the engine. Their purpose is to 'catch' any metal in the oil. At an oil change they are removed and the oil changed normally. They are a preventive measure. They are expensive and are sold in sets, oil filter set, oil pan set, etc.
Nothing is wrong with my engine just looking to keep it that way.
Thanks again for the replys, but it appears no one has installed them in their bike.

They aren't necessary, but like many other snake oil products aimed at Harley owners the folks selling them can spin a great story in the ads to convince you otherwise.  There are hundreds of thousands of bikes running around without super magnets and they don't have a handful of metal shavings running around in the oil.  There are millions upon millions of auto engines with over 100k miles on them that don't have super magnets on them either.  It's snake oil, plain and simple.  The money would be better spent on a chrome accessory.

How much are they asking for those super magnets? A curious mind! :nixweiss:

I don't remember and I'd have to look again, but the costs forced me to ask the question in the first place.
